1963 Dodge Dart 270 Convertible for the Wife

-
I usually say these projects are never done. But yours is done and really nicely done.

The convertible top is not on yet but I have to wait for a few months for the temps to get into the 80s to really get that on nice and tight, but I have those parts already.

I understand the whole missing getting parts in the Mail. It’s rewarding to get new and used parts. We’re just mostly big kids with toys expensive ones.

Nice day for a car show and and the Darts first Trophy. First trip into Tucson and it worked perfectly. Had one panic stop with the manual drums.... Ok for me but that would have been not good for the wife... SSBC disk kit is on the way and a '73-'74 booster on its way to be sent to Booster Exchange for rebuild.

Picked up the boot cover this morning... drove around for a bit. Went home and spent the entire day looking for the damn rear seat trim to hold the front of the cover.... finally found it, right were I put it 5 hours later... at least the garage is clean (no it was not in the garage)..... Needs a few tweaks on the sides but very nice for just copying the old one.

Almost everything accumulated for the SSBC disks.... 10" drum spindles required for the conversion.

It looks like the issues are workable and I like the calipers they provide. Looks like the factory calipers.

The '73 'ish booster/master cylinder I got of eBay last week is boxed ready to go to Booster Exchange. The master cylinder was the factory original and after a bit of work with the bead blaster it is in excellent shape. The bore is spotless so just a little clean up she is good to go. Make sure all the crap is out of the pockets and the small 0.040" ish holes are clear to allow fluid to get into the bore. The residual check valve only goes in the drum brake (rear brakes) outlet. Its job it to be a check valve so it holds 10 lbs of line pressure in the line to keep the drum springs tight and reduce peddle travel before engaging. Above 10 lbs the spring is over taken and the rubber seal moves off the brass seat. Nice having all the same parts across the cars. Had a rebuild kit "in stock" so it is rebuilt ready to install. Many warnings about the 1 1/32" master cylinder in the SSBC kit. The original is 15/16" and will deliver more PSI with the same pressure so this was one reason to do it. The other is I like it to look like original Chrysler parts under the hood...

HI JIM , Can you clarify, you rebuilt your OE MC which was 15/16" bore with Raybestos Kit MK697?
The reason I ask is because I have 2 Bendix 1" Bore MC's that I have been trying to find the right rebuild kits for , with no success. The difference between mine and yours is bore size and the pistons in mine are retained by 2 pear shaped retainers that get removed when the MC is installed. Yours uses a "C" clip . This difference i can only guess effects the stroke if that makes much difference , I don't know

Yes, it's a 15/16" bore. What car is it off from and drum or disk?

SSBC Kelsey Hayes disks and a Ram Man Inc Booster/Master Cylinder.. I have a '73+ booster out for restoration and I rebuilt the MC but after reading about early A disk brakes it turns out the Ram Man system that I bought for the Duster and never used (went stock '73) was very close to what the Bendix systems looked like. They are also all painted black so that is what I did. This is about an OEM looking system I think one could hope for... The only thing is the 10" drum spindles you have to use have a different offset/caster/camber and the wheels are pushed forward now just enough I can't turn to full lock without catching on the fender.... always something... not sure how to fix this.. The last time getting the alignment pulled them back just far enough with the 9" drums.. I am out of adjustment... Oh, they will put you through the windshield with virtual no effort at all now....

Should these 10" spindle changes the alignment that much?

Thanks for the pictures, it is interesting to compare, I used Dr. Diff's 10.95" with new upper control arms, Disc/Drum master cylinder in connection with the original Midland and Ross Brake booster. The system works on 14" wheels and I am quite satisfied with it.

New to Mopar world so i need some info. I have a 1966 Dodge Dart gt convertible, 273 2bbl.,auto on console, dual exhaust,pwr.st.,pwr.top. & factory A/C i have been told that this a very rare car?? Does anyone know prod.#s of this car. Is this info on fender tag? Thank you for any help.

Hi, I have actually be quite shocked on how many of the '63-'66 convertibles are actually out there... Seems like way more than the last few years of convertibles. The 273 is nice as well as the factory AC. I think the total number was around 30,000 each year up to '66. The earlier records where destroyed in a fire so there is no way to know for a lot of these.

If I remember correctly, disc brakes have a wider track than the drums. Can you get a different offset on your front wheels?

yes it gave it a wider stance. I see it now. I was able to do a few more tweaks and she is clearing now. Road trip tomorrow!
