1964 Valiant "Get Runnin & Drivin"

Didn't you have another slant ready to go in it's place?

I actually have two. I have a spare 170 and I have my long rod 225. But neither is ready to go. The head for the 225 is still at the machine shop and the spare 170 needs freshening up, so I'm stickin with what she came with for now.

Nothin wrong with keepin that old car on the road! What's the plan for it after that? 170, to 225, to 400? Or 170 straight to 400?

Home internet is down. Doin this on my phone. I HATE IT. LOL Anyway, I ain't sitting around. Get it on the stand tomorrow. Stay tuned.

its the little 745 3 speed.

Pretty much a weenie for anything but a slant but that's how it goes.

Thanks to @/6 Matt I scored an A230 transmission. Going to pick it up tomorrow. Got my internet fixed, too. Dangit all. lol

Is your internet AT&T because that is what I have and it seems to be out as much as it is on.

Windstream. They SUCK. But they are our only choice. They have a monopoly in this area somehow.

For most of my life I ran old cars daily but stepped up tp around 20 year old nice cars about 15 years ago. Watching this thread is really making me want to step back into a 50 year old car for a daily. My only concern is being able to get parts fast if she breaks.

Just do like I do and stock up. lol

Got Vixen's engine on the stand and got her oil pan off. The bottom of the oil pan has probably 1/2" of sludge on the bottom. There was a circle of clean right where the pickup was sitting. Funny thing though, there was very little sludge actually inside the pickup. The mains and rods were standard, as suspected. The crank looks good. I'll get some pictures here in a little bit. I believe this will be a successful surgery.

Pictures as promised. Note the about a solid 1/2" of sludge in the bottom of the pan. Got the rod and main bearings along with the timing set replaced. I've had enough for tonight so I am going to replace the oil pump tomorrow, clean the pan up and button it back up. This should add a lot of time to this engine, so I am not under the gun to do an engine swap. This way I can concentrate on getting it right instead of doing a rush job. Maybe another day or two of getting it back together and cleaning it up and it will be going back in.

Holy white gunk! Obviously that pan hasn't been off since leaded gas.

I suspect it's never been off. It had 1964 dated bearings in it. They actually weren't bad, but since I had replacements, in they went. I also put a high pressure sprAng in the oil pump which I will put on tomorrow. It should add a lot of life to the little motor.

That is some real slant dedication. You even keep it on a slant when on the stand working on it. :poke:

 Dang! You need to start a $5 pool as to whether people think the sludge was from Quaker State or Pennzoil, then send the scrapings off to be analyzed. The house keeps 99% and the rest gets divided among the peeps that guessed correctly!
