1964 Valiant "Get Runnin & Drivin"

-
You need to figure a way to put huge oversize gutters on the shop, then set a sprinkler system up on the peak and let the water run down and recover what's left in the gutters. A big frickin swamp cooler
Swamp coolers work great where the humidity is low, but
Test driven. Boy is it ever a LOT quicker. It actually wants to hook up more, of course. I could make it roast um, but I'm afraid now I'll break somethin. lol It has a very, very, VERY light whine on decel, but I'm callin it good. It could simply be because it's turnin the drive shaft so much faster. More likely, the pinion depth is out just a skosh, but I'm leavin well enough alone. I'll have to get Kitty to shoot another video next time we take Vixen to town. Kitty's not feelin good today, so it probably won't happen today. I'm callin it a huge success!
Way to go, Rob! We like happy Vixen's!

Pint of that Lucus Engine Oil Treatment additive in that rear end will quiet the whine. (Like STP) the thick stuff, can be used in place of the friction modifier in the sure-grips too.

SBP Aluminum Slots will fit then.
:)

Been the plan all along! Drove it to Gray and back. The whine is a little more than I thought. It barely does it in decel, BUT it does it a little louder when slowing down just before a stop. I'm going to run it a bit and see what happens. I've seen them do it before after sitting up and then clear up, but I'm not holdin my breath. lol The pattern looked good though, so it is what it is.

What surprised me after I built my garage is that in the summer time it would be probably ten degrees hotter in the garage than outside. Maybe more. I know that 95 degrees outside felt cool compared to inside the garage. After years of being miserable when working in my garage in the summer time, and not being able to work for more than an hour at a time and then spending two hours in the house cooling off, I bought a 28,000 BTU window unit A/C for the garage. Stick building, 1700 square feet. Roof is only half insulated, I did insulate the garage doors, walls are not insulated at all. As long as I turn the A/C on before noon, it will get the garage cool and keep it cool. If I wait till 3pm, not so much. Turn it off in the evening. Will still be cool the next morning. I have been amazed at how well it has worked. Honestly don't know how I ever got along without it. If I run it every day, adds $100/month to my electric bill. Worth it to me.

I bet you could knock half that off if you insulated the whole thing. If you're like me, that's slam outta reach though. Especially now.

Yep, and I plan to at least finish insulating the roof this winter. Main problem for me is not money, it's that I'm so old and fat I really don't need to be crawling around in the rafters. Hoping my skinny but lazy grandson will help. Maybe if I pay him. . . .

By the way, it would cost twice as much to air condition any of my old cars as it did to A/C my garage. The cars are OK without, though, as long as you're moving and have the windows down. Stop and go traffic is another matter. But I avoid that if at all possible.

My 2000 ford van rear end was starting to whine cause the carrier bearings were getting worn out, moving the ring gear away from the pinion (miss alignment).

Put new carrier bearings in it and the open diff kit. Whine was just about gone after first test drive. Put 500 miles on it and the ring gear wore back into place, whine was gone.

Changed rear end lube, topped it off and all is good. 2 round trips down and back to Florida so far and working great yet.

I checked all the bearings out GOOD on this. They are all fantastic. In fact, they all look new. I think they were all changed when the gears were added. Even new axle bearings. It's probably just gonna be the nature of the beast. I may grab some of that Lucas and try it though. That's not a bad idea. Only size I see it in is a quart, but I can put half of that in it.

You might want to get 300 miles on it before you put the Lucas in to let the gears wear together with the std gear lube. That Lucas is really slippery, good to give the gears a chance to break in.

Then after 300 miles change out the rear gear lube and add the Lucas at the same time. Good to Go!

No Whining here from me, lol . . .

Nice job on swapping out the rear end.

I wanted to come back to this and say that I am very happy with the rear end. In no way am I upset or any of that with Roy. He sold me a 57 year old part. It was represented as such from day one. The whine is actually quieting down a little bit. It may subside altogether. Even if it doesn't, I got more than what I paid for and I am a happy camper. The sure grip unit works like a dang spool. It's in great shape. Thanks Roy!

Thanks. They aren't new gears. They have a very good pattern, though and the whine is subsiding a little already. I'm not really concerned if it doesn't get any quieter.....the new video Kitty shot barely picks it up....which is about spot on with how it is. I ain't sweatin it.

Here's the trip to Gray with the 3.90 gears. It's a night and day difference. I don't know if that can be picked up on video or not, but it's impressive.

What do they say, 500 miles then check backlash and change fluids....or is that new gears? I loved them 3.91's behind my 340 on the street. 70 mile Spring Fling drive was a little nerve racking. I got 2.93's for the 225 turbo and a set of 3.55's on deck for the 403.

It doesn't bother me at all. But then I drove my 65 everyday back and forth to work almost four years with 4.30s. Just mash on it and go.

You can hear that gear whine pretty good when I come up to that 4 way stop. I've been readin and talkin to @Garrett Ellison and he said the same thing I read about. Something about if one has been without oil for a little bit.....and especially if you wash one out, which I did, with oil eater it strips the oil residue off the gears and can make them make noisy until they get coated good again. At least it sounds good. LMAO

It is seriously much less than it was in that video now. It's a marked difference. I'm not worried with it either way. I'm a happy camper.

Best part of that video is when kitty shows the radio and it has skid row playing! Hell yea brother. But you turned it down. Boooo

That's cause if they hear it on youtube, they'll flag your video.

Thanks for the ride-a-long, enjoyed that.

Man on a mission and Kitty on the film crew, can't beat that.

Getting her all dialed in now.
