1966 Dodge D/Dart ~ 'Mystery, Myth and Misconception'

-
I just want to clear up one misconception about the Super Stock cars, the "O" is actually a zero, L023 not LO23, so El Zero not EL OH.

Doc,

You are correct.

Another 1966 'D/Stock' entry

The 1964 Oldsmobile F-85 or Cutlass could be ordered with the '4-4-2' Package.

With the 330/310 HP, it fit into the {10.60 to11.29 Wt/Hp} Class.

But mine is now located in EL OH! ;-) LOL!

Interesting to hear about the O vs 0. I wonder why they went with a zero instead of a letter...especially since on normal production cars they used 2 letters to start the VIN.

Here we go again Jim,
The build sheet for a D/Dart says the car is an L"OH"23. In the 1966 parts book, the second position on the VIN is the price class which are all letters.

In 1965, the price class was a number.

Will this information help..........

Now follow closely............

In 1965, the '2nd Digit' in the Code was the Number '0' for Super/Stock Cars.

In 1966, the '2nd Digit' was ?

In 1967, the '2nd-Digit' in the Code was the Letter 'O' for Super/Stock Cars.

According to the order of the alphabet it looks like the letter "O".

Too bad they couldn't have used the zero with a slash through it. Ø I have trouble with that every day when tool numbers mix letters and numbers and some fonts make the two look very close to the same. The letter o is usually round whereas the number 0 is oval or oblong. I'll still know what to look for wgen I see it on a vin tag. The fender tag won't tell. tmm

Paul,
In 1966 the 2nd-Diget was changed to a letter as shown on the S.C. 699 Special Order Form. You have it listed as 1967.

It's also shown on the Broadcast Sheet for a D/Dart as being an LO23.

It is truely the letter O. I see that the number 0's are slashed further down on the sheet to keep them different.

The 'South Central Pennsylvania Dodge Dealers Association'.

That 'D/Dart' was based out of > D.E. Stettler & Sons Dodge - York, Pennsylvania.

Raced at;
* York US 30 Dragway {York, Pennsylvania}
* Dragways, Inc. {Numidia, Pennsylvania}
* Mason-Dixon Dragway {Boonsboro, Maryland}

Sold by the 'Dealers Association' at the end of 1966 Racing Season to >>>> Joseph Allore ?

So, the D.E. Stettler & Sons car was the Stiles prepped car? Correct?

The Newcomer was just a Banning car. The photo of it with the Stiles plate on it was from 1967. It has C/S class makings on it.

Looks like another dealership to ad to the mix.

Gotta go out and test fit the slicks on the D/Dart. Been wanting to do that all week. It's going up into the high 70's today so it should be good working outdoor weather.
Alan

Alan,

Correct....... 'The Newcomer' was based out of Fredericksburg, Maryland.

'The South Central Dodge Dealers Association' D/Dart was a different car.

A typical Mopar 'Dealer Association' comprised of 15 or so 'Regional Dealers' that would pool
some of their advertising money together, to put towards sponsoring a Drag Car at their
local Drag Strip {ie; York US 30 Dragway}.

They only promoted the 'current' Model Year Car {ie; 1966 D/Dart}, and then would
sell it off {at a fair price} at the end of the Model Year.

From what I gathered, 'one' Joseph Allore ran a 'Dealer-Sponsored' 1965 Plymouth Satellite
383/325 HP 4-Speed in C/S in 1965, and D/S in 1966 with 'moderate success'.

He bought the D/Dart from the Dealers Association at the end of the 1966 Racing Season.

The 1966 Year-End List

But if you look at the "0" on the VIN plate it is definitely a ZERO, as there was no letter "O" available in the stamp set. It may be just semantics, but I thought I would point it out.:D

April 1966

Scary Fast.

The Musser Brothers,

With their 1961 Corvette 283/270 HP 'Dual-Quad' combination.

Ran a ........... 12.71 @ York US 30 Dragway.

They were 'Disqualified' for running too far under the '12.95' D/Stock Record.

Does anyone have original headers and aircleaner on their car?

I've got the original headers in a box up in the attic and the carb and air cleaner are on the car. I also have the special y-pipe.

Paul,
Had the Musser Brothers not run the 12.70 number, do you think the D/Dart would have been competitive against the other D/Sock cars? It seems like some D/Darts ran quite a few rounds while posting some high 12's low 13's. The Musser Brothers probably were capably of running that 12.71 back in 1965. They just didn't tip their hand to the Chrysler Exec.

Alan,

The Musser Brothers were the 'Kings of D/Stock', as nobody could come close to them.

They were capable of running 12.70's as early as mid-1965, yet they held back at
National Record meets, to keep the Record 'soft' at 13.02 during 1965.

The Musser Brothers were the 'Main Threat' to Mopar Factory-backed racers for
the Stock Eliminator Championship = {Dave Kempton C/SA and Doug Kahl C/SA}
in their 1962 Plymouth 'Sport Fury' 383/343 HP cars.

After the 1961 Corvette 283/270 HP 'Dual-Quad'

The other 'Top Dog' 'D/Stock' in 1966 cars were;

1} 1960 Pontiac Catalina 389/348 HP 'Tri-Power' of Dick Hill {Marion, Pennsylvania}

2} 1963 Chevrolet Biscayne 327/300 HP of Dan's Garage {Utica-Rome, New York}

3} 1965 Ford Mustang 289/271 HP 'K-Code' of Tom Vlakes {Delaware}

The 'biggest problem' was that there were only a handful of 1966 D/Darts produced. If Dodge
had pulled the trigger and built 250 or so, I'm sure that the D/Dart would have made a mark at the
Drag Strip.

According to Paul Canizzaro from Chrysler Engineering, he stated that they had around 100 pre-orders for the cars of which 45 were from racers. Chrysler even had 200 sets of headers made for the cars. So they did plan on a full scale attack on D/Stock. They wanted to do well against the Jr. Stockers.

And then the dreaded 12.90 run and then 12.70's. How plans change!

Alan,

In the 1st-Week of July 1966,

York US 30 Dragway {Pennsylvania} Sponsored a 'Dodge Dealer Day' event.

Still checking on participation.

Paul,
On some old posts on this and other sites, I've found the following cars/dealerships mentioned. I've tried contacting the people that mentioned these cars but nobody has responded to my PM's. Guess I should start a file on these cars.

-- Shortman Dodge - Overland Park, Ks -- Al Miller
-- Ilderton Dodge - High Point, NC -- a guy in Asheboro NC, had it
-- One was supposedly raced at Puyallup Dragway in Puyallup, Wa. in 1966

-- Per Jeff Lee on ClassRacer -- Mike Donolly who owned Phoenix Raceway Park suposedly owned one named 'The Pirate'
-- Per Jim Wahl on ClassRacer -- New Symrna Dodge had the 'Lamb Charger'

Alan Lewis has added all your info to the D/Dart site. Looks great. Here's the site. http://www.seriousviewers.com/D-Dart/ddart.htm
