1972 Duster Build with my Daughter

-
There are good deals on eBay, if you look... the '72 should have a 3656199 ballast resistor. These were just for a few years before the 3874767 replaced it. If you want a real 1972 part it will cost you around $40. The more common 3874767 ranged from $9.99 to some yahoo that thought it was worth $225..... I bought the $9.99 one....

You are doing an outstanding job . This will be one of the finest Dusters on the planet . Please keep going and keep us informed . I learned more following you than years of me screwing things up . thank you .

Keep up the good work Jim. Looking good.
What happens if one of her friends sits on the hood or pukes on the dash?
Have you ordered the enclosed trailer and 3500 Ram so she can take it to school?
:poke:

Seriously, have you ordered the grill yet?
They are back ordered until god knows when. Just curious.

HaHa, it is hers she can do what she wants but after the work she is putting in I think there is a new found appreciation :). A lot of this is just me wanting to know the condition of everything, and while I am there a bit of paint and polish is almost free ;)

I have a used one that I bought and need to pick up (not shark tooth). Suppose to be in good shape.

We put one on back order just because. We are currently running the original grill which is in pretty good shape but my fear with the early 70s sun baked plastic is that one bird strike at 50 MPH will shatter it like glass.
Back ordered a new OER through friend for $350.

Washer Foot Pump. The bonding between the bulb and plate with the fitting has dried out and failed. I found a NOS on on eBay for a fair price it will be here Monday.

Damn, you should have said something, we have our original that is in very good shape. I would have given it to you. Can you stop the order?
We converted to electric. As Jr's 72 is a manual transmission I wanted to limit the amount of work he had to do with his feet.

Thanks man but it has been shipped. I am good. It was a good deal. Shipping would be in the same range as I paid with free shipping for the NOS part.

OK, ping me moving forward if you're looking for something. We have several good parts leftover that I'll throw up for sale when I get around to it. I would rather donate them to a good cause.

Wow! That is beautiful. Great job and I am looking forward to seeing it finished, as are you I am sure!

WTF: I got the NOS foot pump. The center piece I took out is SUPPOSE to be free from the rubber and come out..... How does this damn thing seal and work? Can anyone explain to me how this system works....

All I want for Christmas is some New Old Stock, some New Old Stock!

New Foot Pump wiper bulb
New Alternator rotor for a '72 60A
New 2 Speed wiper motor main gear
New Ballast Resistor

Kaelyn has been sick and had to take her to urgent care this morning so not much done. She is fine just some sort of stomach bug. Sometimes it is little things that matter....

I dunno for sure. I have same setup on my '69 GTS and it is pretty "Mickey Mouse". Lots and lots of pumping for a very weak spray. Not good. I think if you really plan on using those washers much I'd get the conversion to an electric pump!

I figured it out. The seal is made between the bladder and the mounting bracket not the plate and bladder. Once we start putting it back together I will explain better. We will see how it works. We got the electric with the Dart so I have the switch to make it work.

Great thread; this one is bookmarked for future reference. I'm curious on the wiper motor rebuild - other than the main gear, were any parts replaced or was it strictly OE refurb?

Nothing else was bad. Just clean it up and put it back together. The brushes looked great other than that there is nothing else to go wrong. If these old motors have not been abused in the past they will last forever. They fail because what they are driving get old and hard to turn so they run hot and fail.

Daughter is feeling better but not enough to work so I spent the day tinkering. I separated the baggies for the hardware for under the hood and firewall then bead blasted/wire brushed the hardware to prepare for installation.

Installed the washer nozzles loosely. We do have new hose but I will wait for her to help finish it up. Also forgot to order the "F" fitting so I don't have everything anyway.

Installed the Battery Box.

Blasted and painted the foot washer pump bracket

The wire holders are restored, I need to remember where they went... The rest of the hardware in the box is cleaned and restored too.

Blasted some of the last remaining parts to be ready for black epoxy primer when we get a warm weekend.

The 904 is ready to install as well.

The foot operated washer system.....

The center plastic should not be bonded to the rubber bladder so the seal is actually the plastic disk pulling back on the rubber bladder and pinching it to the metal bracket. That says the bracket around the hole is always submerged in washer fluid in that that area...

Now on the other side there is a flat rubber gasket so the fluid does not leak out around the threads of the plastic plate's nipple.

Guess what the size of that is? Almost the exact size of a garden hose gasket! I ordered some round ones from Amazon for the garden hose and to try on this...

You can see the nipple adapter has a flat back side that pinches the gasket to the bracket and the adapter. The small nipple has a small bearing in it to make a really cheap check valve... The direction seems backwards to me but I will learn more once we get it installed and try to operate it.

Mocking up of the wiring. A few mystery connectors that I don't know what plugs into them.... Also they don't put the ECU connector in the right spot for '72 Dusters... :(
