1974 Duster

-
I'm off to pickup my 42RH! The yard I'm dealing with seems to be very nice people and are including everything off the doner vehicle.

Will post pics later.

OK! Several hours work on the Duster today, some minor nits some major..

1) Adjusted drivers torsion bar 2 full turns to compensate for Mancini leaf springs. Might go another turn, car looks much more level from the rear now. Considering stiff bars, have to mic up the current ones in my spare time.

2) Finally replaced all the carpet in the rear seat area!! This has been an issue since day one with the car. I purchased 3 yards of bulk black loop carpet from Ebay seller vtradingllc. Excellent quality for this sort of work, $12 a yard and they will be happy to send you a sample.

While it doesn't have the stitched edging like the original (which no one reproduces) it looks MUCH nicer than nothing or the beat up original stuff.

3) I'm continuing in my quest to make the car more "modern like" by tracking down rattles and squeaks and making the car more pleasent to drive. While I had the rear tray out (the one over the axle tunnel) I laid down a layer of sound deadner and filled the empty space with insulation, covered the wheel wells with deadner taken from a 1975 Dart parts car, added the same under the "package tray" and rear seat (also from the Dart) and for good measure added a second layer under the rear seat with material scavenged from my 1991 Spirit R/T!

The car while cruising is really sweet, exhaust drone and boom is a fraction of what it was. My next target is the firewall area which seems to be letting in a lot of engine noise while tooling down the highway. RPM reduction will help a lot too when the overdrive gets installed.

4) Added a center seat belt to the rear seat, going to have three kids here this summer! I also have a center set for the front bench too but going to hold off on that option for now.

Had some extra time and found this build. Great work and good planning.
I cant wait to get back to making progress on my build

Spent a few hours cleaning off engine parts- Work on the house has been sapping all my free time! Will be doing a review/post on the parts cleaner I'm using, it works pretty good if more expensive then I'd like.

Short block is together minus camshaft, hit a snag there.

Some updated photos, the sun is way to bright! I'll have to try to take some more as sunset.

Leaning towards white stripe, might order from Phoenix next week.

I was leaning towards flat black, but they look best with a black grill / hood / vinyl roof in my honest opinion.

it will look good with either one. i'e done all the stripe kits. almost every one looked better with than without. tan with the wite kit on a 72 was sort of less than what we thought it would be.

Some minor tinkering this weekend- Working on the advance curve for the distributor (too much vacuum, need to tweak the can so it has 5 degree less) changed out the heater hoses and a fuel line that was'nt right. Waiting for the cam to come in for the new motor! Tuesday.

Opinions are like a-holes everyone has them and . . .

So here's mine. Although the white would look good with the color of the car - typically the stripe reflects the interior color. I think your gut is black? If so - food for thought - how many of these cars colored like yours do you see with gloss black stripes? Hmmmmm . . .

Once again just my stinky opinion.

No offense taken but after a years thought after looking at a number of Dusters with black and white stripes my mind is made up, white.

If the grill was black, or had dark rims (magnum 500s) or had a black roof it might be a different story...

Since I'm stuck waiting for engine parts again (screwed by Mancini one more time!) I decided to direct my energies to cleaning up the gas tank. Not a perfect job but much better looking then when I started.

Wired wheeled & scotchbrited the tank, sandblasted & painted the straps and hardware one side at a time and reundercoated the surrounding areas. The car is a factory undercoat car, there was actually a fair amount on the tank that didn't go back on, was just sort of splattered about. It was very heavy on the sides of the tank, I roughed that up and put a fresh coat over it.

Tank and straps were done with Eastwoods Tank Tone, the undercoating was a 3M product. Tank was finished with Eastwoods Diamond clear satin when finished.

great thread..nice duster! love the space saver rear seats..car needs the stripes looks naked! i would do the correct stripe for those years that kinda split torward there front..white would be nice on the red imo and the rear kit as well..good job tho

Two shots from last nights Berlin Turnpike show at the BK, will be some of the last pictures taken before the stripes are applied. Heck of a thunder boomer rolled through just minutes after we arrived at the show but was gone after 15 minutes.

Stripes came in from Phoenix Graphics on Friday!

Been lax on the car due to work and the boys being here for the summer, should be able to get rolling again now that they are heading home.

I'd like to get the bay painted, new engine in, stripes installed, speaker box made up for the rear seat area and trip to the dragstrip in before the end of the season.

What's with the stamping on the cylinder head? Did you do some porting on them? Or did I just miss something?

Looks good!
