I was scrolling through the internet one morning. Now I have a Mopar addiction.

I am 27 now, at the time I started this project I was 25. All my automotive knowledge came from the world of imports and I am learning as I go.

I want to make a build thread so I have a nice place to store where she came from and where she is at.

The car was listed for $2000 on the Herkimer/Utica NY Craigslist. I saw the ad, but I scrolled by thinking I don't have that kind of cash I already have 4 cars the wife would never allow it! But...... Then I was scrolling through my facebook and the same car happened to pull up on a buy/trade/sell page saying "I need this gone yesterday $1000 come take it!". So of course I called and said whats the real price? I have cash saved away for a Disney Trip and for that price I cant pass.

I drove two hours that night and became $700 poorer. I was the proud owner of a 1975 Dodge Dart SE. View attachment 11133737_698043523635455_1002490030844847764_n.jpg

The owner I bought it from had told me, "IDK much about it, its just sat in the driveway. I picked it up from a co-worker who got it running and had just payed to have the tranny built before he hit economic hard times. It was the co workers fathers and he had owned it for some time, and over the years slowly upgraded it". He did not know much about the vehicle (or at least didn't disclose to me much other than it is automatic and a V8 )

I ran the VIN when I got home and the car was suppose to be a 225 /6 and a 904 tranny.

Now I was interested to find out what is in the car? Apparently somewhere along the way she ended up with a Punched out 318 donated from a rotted 1968 'Cuda with a Hurst Floor ratchet shift 727 mounted to her. The tranny has a B&M 2,000 Stall, and a shift kit. The motor was in the car. It started but it barely ran. We drove it on the trailer (barely), rolled it off and then parked it for the winter. I could tell it had performance parts on the car but I did not know exactly what they were.

Fast forward to spring I could not stand the color so I bought the cheapest paint I could find, tape, and news paper.

She slowly started looking like she does today View attachment 11050221_711853402254467_7858197743920925017_n.jpg

Next it was time to work on making it run right. The car had a points style ignition, and a rats nest of wiring under the dash.

After getting all the gauges working I put in a carpet and seats, I took the rear seat belts out of a 1999 Impreza and Installed them for my kids car seats.

The car still never ran very well so I started re thinking the entire ignition and replaced the Coil, Plugs, Wires, Ballast Resistor, went with an electronic Dizzy and used this diagram I found on here.

Boom! Now she starts first turn, and seems to purr like a kitten.

I was afraid to put it on the road in the condition it was in so I ordered all new Calipers, Brake lines, Rotors, Wheel Bearings, Ball Joints, Tie Rods, and Belts. All stuff that should have been done years ago! Now she should be safe!

I was so proud, I wanted to see what she could do. So I putted out to the end of the driveway, gave her a few quick rev's thinking, YEAH THIS IS MUSCLE CAR STUFF and I punched the gas.

She spun the tires for about .02 seconds and SNAP it sounded like the earth shattered behind me?!?

Well... It turns out 7.25 Rear ends suck.

Now I push it into the garage and she sits again while I convince the wife as to why we should keep putting money into this project that has still yet to see the road!

It sits for another few months while I wrangle up a 31 spline Ford 8.8 out of a 1993 Cobra Mustang with Strange Axles, 4.11's, a mini spool, and disc brakes.

A couple nights, A few trips to the local driveshaft guys in Syracuse, and a small amount of fab later...

View attachment 11402791_736186986487775_2901478644117556704_o.jpg

The phone that had all of the fab, and install pics of course was destroyed and I lost all those pictures, but for the most part it was a perfect fit, just had to fab perches a little to make it work with the stock Mopar design.

Ran out of available attachments, I will finish to where I am at in a reply.

Attached is my broken 7.25 spider gear, might not be noticeable, but it is missing and rounded off like half the teeth.

After the whole rear end issue. The car was on jacks for a few months, eventually I got it all together, the brakes plumbed, and the right driveshaft length/yoke.

While the car was up in the garage I took some time to start touching up the paint. I wanted to do something about the matte silver someone put on all the bumpers and trim. Since the chrome was covered I might as well make it look a little more menacing.

Murder all the things!

At that time I replaced the fogged over headlight lenses with new ones, and wired up some red evil eyes to a switch in my ashtray. (Of course a bird pooped on the font bumper right before this picture was taken LOL)

Now that she was starting to look how I wanted her it was time to finally get her on the road. The first day was good and she performed ok. My gas mileage was horrible I knew 4.11's would have it screaming but it seemed obnoxious. When I got home she was flooding to the point gas was just pouring for a few minutes after shut down.

Apparently I sucked up all the garbage that was sitting in the tank over the last decade or two. With that all cleaned up and back together She runs like a raped ape! So much more power, better MPG's, and She smoked those little 185/75/14 through second!

External Oil Filter Installed!

They had to go! A buddy was selling a set of 15x8.5's with the right offset to tuck right in my wheel wells. I changed out my Shocks and Springs, lowered my torsion bars 4 turns and got her the right stance I wanted for the time being.

Things are starting to get fun, I am daily driving the Dart to work 20 miles each way!

Out of attachments, more in part 3!

I grabbed a set of BFG's Radial TA 245/60/15's for the rear, and 205/60/15 up front.

Its nice and meaty, they are not the greatest tire... but they do handle much better than what I had to say the least!

I am starting to get thumbs up from people at gas stations at this point. People will stop to tell me stories of how a family member had a Dart or Valiant when I am at intersections or parking lots. It really is a great conversation piece. Everyone has a story about a Dart! Most of the time they explain that they wish they had seen the potential in them! They are right. What a great platform these cars are and they are damn near bulletproof!

Now for the time being I am in love with how it has come out... I really am!

But! I was sick of the sound of the exhaust. The car has a comp cam, and some work done to her. It is pretty quick and fun around town, but it sounds like a turd when it should sound mean. Stock 2" catless true duals straight piped to cherry bombs. If you have that setup, good for you. Yet, to me it sounded like an underpowered 1950's farm truck.

So I grabbed some 2.5" pipe, a Lawson 2.5" X Pipe

and ran a new exhaust system dumped at the axle.

This is how she sounds now!

As of 10/31/15 that is how she sits. I am always looking for new ways to bring her to a higher level of fun on a budget.

NEXT GOALS:

Short Term:
I am saving up to upgrade all four discs and calipers to Wilwoods, do full coilovers by hotchkis or similar design, a modern steering box, and some 18's in rear and 17's out front with sticky low profile rubber.

Mid Term: Get a 4 speed or 5 speed in the car, because though it is fun... nothing beats a clutch during the driving experiance.

Long Term: Collect the necessary parts to do a Blow Through carb with a single Borg Warner S475 or similar turbo.

Do the paint and body work correctly.

Track the car on weekends, drive her daily on week days during the summer months.

Wow nice car Justin. Looks like you did some awesome work on it. I love old skool stuff. Simple to work on and fix. I have a schematic if your interested in it to convert your electronic ignition to a much simpler GM HEI 4 pin module type, and dump your ballast resistor. Theres also a nice bracket available by www.designed2drive.com to mount the 4 pin HEI module to the underside of the existing mopar distributor making a clean install. HEI delivers way hotter spark than the mopar electronic since its not hobbled by a 6v ballast resistor. The HEI swap is like a poor mans MSD. Car starts faster, idles smoother, gets better pickup, and mileage. Also theres a neat Mechanical advance limiter plate made by FBO ignition for mopar distributor recurving, and mr gasket makes a recurve spring kit. pn# MRG 925B.

Anyway. Nice car, pm me if you want the schematic. I can email it to you as an attachment.

Cool build! I'm right over in Rochester, if I ever get my heap on the road we should do a mini meet-up.

badass little ride man!

the '75 Dart tailights are my 2nd favorite next to the 70-71 Duster tailights - when i was shopping around for a shell for my 440 i was specifically looking for either a 70-71 Duster or a 75 Dart - turns out the Duster came up first but ive always had an itch for those 75 Darts!

good luck with your ride! if you ever make it out to this side of the country drop a line and we'll go tear up PCH Mopar style!

I have a friend that lives in phelps, NY I am out towards Rochester a couple times a year. That or, if you go to the Nationals maybe meet up and cruise together. I have yet to go to Nationals but I think I will this year.

Love the color/wheel combo on that Valiant! What a snotty looking car.

And as for Cali. I would need a second mortgage to get the gas money to drive this thing that way! I also love the rear of those dusters. As for my car it's the front that annoys me, I am half temped to do a reverse cowl, and a track style front valance. Try to make it a little more Aggressive.

A chin spolier would look good on it. The cowl hood would look ok too. Bet you didnt know this but the 73 to 76 dart hood with the bump in the center is a recycled stamping from the 69 barracuda. The dart sport twin scoop fits these hoods , as well as a fiberglass hood from a 69 cuda. I have seen these as flat hoods, as cowl induction hoods, and as six pack hoods. Check out US body source, or stinger fiberglass, and look at the 69 cuda hoods.

Also the stock energy absorbing bumper inner structures on your dart have about 75 lbs of additional steel structure bolted to them on either end. You may be able to make lighter mounting brackets for the steel outer bumpers and get rid of the heavy assed inner structure. And rid yourself of about 150 lbs dead weight.

Knowing that the stamping for your dart hood is essentially recycled tooling from the 69 barracuda may help you with a bigger selection choice of hoods.

BTW i emailed you some pix of my dist setup, and the HEI schematic.

Do you plan on converting your 8.8 to 5 lug? If so ford ranger, aerostar, bronco axles out of an 8.8 will work and are 5 bolt 4.50" circle. Same pattern as your mopar front discs. I think you can get the cobra rear discs drilled for 5 bolt too. This way you only need to carry one spare tire. I think when using the truck axles since they use an offset pumpkin and the mustang rear is centered you will need to strip the axles out of 2 seperate trucks. I cant remember which axle the longer or shorter ones you have to use.

Hope this helps
Matt

Yes I have looked into the 5 lug swap, I read somewhere 90-94 Town Car used the big 5Lug rear discs with equal length axles.

At some point that is definitely in the plan, two lug patterns sucks.

lmao ya itd probably be cheaper to ship the car and take a plane!!!

as far as front ends... ya the beaks are definitely an aquired taste - im hot and cold on them but ive seen some pretty badass ones tho. cool thing about A bodies is you got a bunch of choices for front ends, just pick your favorite one and slap that sukker on!

good luck with it!

Justin, if you recide to go fiberglass on a hood, a lot of guys just remove the coiled hood springs and use a prop rod because the springs are too stout for the lighter and weaker fiberglass hood.

However if you find a dodge daytona or chrysler lebaron coupe/convertible these use the same style coiled spring as your dart, but one designed for their lighter weaker hood. These work great on the fiberglass hoods. They have just enough tension to hold the hood open, and allow you to close it with out snapping the fiberglass hood.

Btw did you get the HEI schematic and pix? I have even seen guys hollow out mopar electronic brain boxes, and put HEI modules inside them. This way you dont have to mod your stock wiring except for jumping out the ballast resistor.

Matt

Picked up some new odds and end from Christmas that will be put on in the spring.

New rear 1993 cobra rear calipers,
And hopefully cash towards a aluminum radiator and electric fans.

Winter needs to hurry up and be done!

Great car and great build. Sounds a bit familiar. I have limited knowledge but have learned alot from a great friend and a great site (FABO) members here are amazing. I have done just about all on my Dart with guidence from here and i did my project like you...your ideas and way. Some may not like it but its yhttp://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/images/smilies/3gears.gifours. I like the look and all you have done. Heres to more success........:burnout:

Out and about, just installed a new air cleaner, and some other small goodies.

Love my beater.
