318 to 340??

Great guy's! I've learned something new tonight! Looks like they went to the cast crank sometime during production in 72, because I had a cast crank 72 I had always thought all 72's were, looks like engine number 39118000 was the last steel crank in 72.

Ok. LOL... the guy built indy 500 engines and didn't know a cast from forged crank. I guess I ran the wrong converter, and I put that smooth running 340 in a Demon, right in front of the original 318's converter and tranny, then I put it in a '70 truck, right in front of the original 318's converter and drove it from Illinois to Colo, then it went into a '72 Duster that had a neutral converter, till the car was sold. Purred like a kitten..... :)

Sorry, I had to be a little smart …. LOL.

I'm just tellin you how they came man. I caint help all the rest of it. The only other possibility is that someone turned down a 360 crank and had it internally balanced.

That would make it a stroker.... mini stroker... 372 CI

Yeah well, that's the only way to explain it as you've told it.

The way they came was steel neutral and cast external. Like I said, That's all I got.

Not sure this is true. I did a cast crank '72 340 and it was internally balanced. I used a couple different neutrally balanced converters behind it without issue, using a standard flexplate.
Looks like you had a 72 steel crank and I had a 72 cast crank.

Please use the 340 exhaust manifolds on the 340. Then the exhaust will change. Manifold discharge is larger on 340.

Make sure the oil pan is same.
Not sure where this 340 came from.
Need the abody oil pan and pick up.
Drs side mount is different but you can use the 318 mount but you need to be creative withwashers, linger bolts and use grade 8 hardware.

Throttle linkage will be different and possibly a new longer reach throttle cable from gas pedal to carb. I will assume you are switching from 2bb carb to 4 bbl.

All minor differences. Good luck and have fun.

The motor mounts are exactly the same. I don't understand why people keep repeating that bullshit myth. The mounts are ALL the same. Now, the motor mount engine BRACKET for the 340 and 360 are the same, meaning they are different from the 273 and 318. So, you will need the driver's side engine BRACKET for the 340 or 360, but the mounts are the same.
Oh Good Golly Miss Molly yes you're correct the bracket not the motor mount. I was using the wrong terminology my bad yes the motor mount is just a flat piece of rubber with a bolt sticking out of each and offset. The bracket that goes from the motor to the Rubber Biscuit is different unsung small blocks on driver side. I had to modify the driver side when I went from a 318 to 360. But since then I found the correct one and put it on. You should be a technical editor!

Bracket smacket...you know what we meant RRR. LOL! Now that rubber thingy is a biscuit right?

Kidding aside, Thanks for clarifying the verbiage for our OP.

Pat

What is the difference between the engine bracket and the engine mount? I ordered Schumacher slant6 to 273/318 mounts now with the change of plans I have to order the 340/360 what's the difference if they are the same?

There's the frame and on top of it since technically called the motor mount that rubber piece. Then going up from that is the bracket that goes from the mount and hooks onto the motor okay that's it I'm going out to the garage and taking pictures...

On '72 or older, they have a rubber biscuit for the mount, and a metal bracket that bolts to the motor. the rubber mount goes in between the bracket and K-frame

Oh I thought that was all considered an engine mount! I didnt realize that there was two different parts there. Now I do thanks guys learn something new every day on here.

Bracket bolts to the motor, this picture is the mount that goes between the K-frame and motor bracket. '72 and older.

Is there an easy modification I can use the 318 Schumacher mounts with my 360? Or just buy the right one and be done.

only on one side you'll need spacers... can be as ugly as a stack of washers....
