543 0R 505

-
I got a couple of friends that feel my Indy SR heads (flow 350/250)will be more at home on the 505. They don’t think they are up to the task of feeding the 543. I do have a Super Victor and a 1250 Dominator to top them off. Both would be using the same roller cam. Comp 275/[email protected] 108 .625 lift. I do have 1.6 rockers also. 543 will be 11-1. 505 12-1 Compression 543 uses external oiling. 505 internal oiling. What does the FABO crowd think? This is for bracket racing. I will need to use a 4.5 gasket to clear the combustion chambers in the SR heads. Thanks. Kim
Is there a differance in crank quality between the two? I would go with the better one if so, if not, 543. I like the bigger motor because it will be making max hp earlier. If you have great traction then consistancy will be a touch better due to the lower rpm power. It will also be faster. 38 cubes and a full point compression means a lot.

Same kits. 543 is 11-1. 505 12-1

That’s 300 thou shorter piston than mine. Yours must look like a hockey puck. Kim

No, actually fairly decent , did a lot of studying and searching before I settled on this size. You need to do some study on it , their fairly dependable , piston is longer than u might think . I`m surprised u aren`t up on it , as much stuff as you post for sale .

Bob, I have a 505 kit. It has a 6.8 rod and a 4.25 stroke crank. This is the Chevy size of 2.2 bearing size. I don’t pretend to know everything and I like to learn stuff as well as the next guy. Here is a 505 piston in the top pic. Uses a 6.8 rod. Here is the 543 piston in the bottom pic. Uses a 7.1 rod. My kits are the same brand name. Kim

THAT SECOND PISTON IS QUITE A BIT SHORTER THAN MINE , SORRY I DONT HAVE PICS , THEIR IN THE ENGINE . You might look at hughs website for more info .
If I remember right the piston pin is higher in my icons than either one of those , altho its not in the ring pack.

Yes it is. That’s why I want to keep the revs to 6500 more or less. They have a support rail for the rings so that probably won’t be a problem. Kim
IMHO gearing for 6200 at the stripe with a 543 and SR heads would make some sense. No need to run a combo like that above 6400 and using a tall gear to keep finishline revs down will enhance engine life a lot. A 2.45 low gear combined with a 4.10 rear and 30 inch tall tires puts a very serious load on the tire contact patch at launch. A taller rear gear or tire will help a lot and due to traction issues will probably be faster.

Man that 543 pin is way, way into the oil rail. Crazy.

I BUILT A HOT 406 SBC W/ 6'' RODS , THE PIN WAS IN THE RING PACK , USED THE SUPPLIED EXPANDER SUPORT , AND HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS W/ IT , WENT 10. 28 IN THIS-----------

I don't think the pin in the oil ring is an issue at all, I think it's like a wives tail

It must not be a big deal. I bought these pistons off Jason Digby owner of the one time fastest car on leaf springs. He was running a nitrous combo then going I think 4.40’s. I bought them when he switched to a turbo.

Dam , I just noticed this ^^^^^^^^^^^^my 7.1 rod s pin is below the oil ring w. 4.250 stroke ------late to the game --------------again!

I bought a set of ten ross custom dished pistons for a B1head with a 4.625 stroke (!) 7" rod, for a quarter of what they cost. Believe it or not, the pin is not in the oil ring.
I did some calculating, and with a 4.375 crank and 7.1 rods, they are only some .030 in the hole. I can either deck the block or leave it be. With 4.35 bore, its 520.
The only question is where the valve reliefs are, will they work with maxwedge victors. Id rather not run B1s to avoid having to spin this motor high enough to use B1 airflow.
Aftermarket block? You bet B1s, and spin away!

The pin being up into the oil ring land and needing a spacer isn’t a big deal at all.
That’s how most of the generic 511 low deck builds are.

The Icon pistons for the RB block using a 4.375 stroke and 7.100 rods don’t have the pin in the ring land.
