66 Dart Owners thread

1966 Dart 270. 318. MSD Ignition setup. Just got it a couple weeks ago. Having a charging issue and for some damn reason cant get a clear bead on the bolt pattern, lol.

The factory wheel bolt pattern in on a 4" circle. They came in 13 X 4 1/2; 14 X 4 1/2; and 14 X 5 1/2 sizes. All were plain steel wheels. As for the charging system, get a good manual and do some testing. They're not a complex system. If you post some symtoms, we might be able to help narrow it down a bit.

hey all,
I am hoping someone might have a idea to help me out, though i imagine i got to tinker with things till it works. I dont have any instrument lights working. Though the turn signals work, and the high beam indicator light. Yes i have checked the bulbs.
I looked for an inline fuse but found none (maybe i missed it???). There was a pair of yellow wires that were not fully connected to the healight switch which i connected, but this did not help (i dont know what they are supposed to do).
I am begining to think that the headlight switch might be faulty. (though the headlights work just fine).
Any ideas? I figured this would be the place to post this... if not sorry.

Thanks for the kind words. 15x8 on the rear with 235/60/15 Mickey Thompson drag radials, and 15x7 on the front with 195/50/15 on the front. It's fun to drive.

mopartx did you have to make any modifications to fit them? like moving the springs or chanding the differential?

No, factory A body 8 3/4" rear end with factory spring location. I did have to have the wheel wells rolled, aka beat the lip with a sledge hammer. I let my paint and body guy doit for me. On the right side you can't get a finger in between the tire and wheel well, it's tight. On the front I hacked off the inside wheel well corner on the front inside of the fender. I wanted to leave all the factory chrome in place. I had 245/60-15 road huggers on the same wheels and they rubbed a little too.

figued out why the dash lights were not working, the headlight switch had oxidized and was not making a connection. $8 and about ten minutes of work and everything lights up.

hey guys some awesome darts, happy to have found this thread. a few years back after selling my first nova project (i was raised on Chevrolet), i stumbled across my 66 GT for just over 1000$ and drove it home. its appeared to have had the driver side fender, hood and grill support replaced after some kind of accident as they were both primered. it had 2 slot mags and 2 steel wheels, was missing the air cleaner and i knew nothing about mopars to boot. i did little with it for quite a while (probably out of intimidation) and only this year have actually began figuring it out and "bonding" with it. after talking to some mopar guys and some personal research ive found it had the commando/charger version of the 273. im hoping it is a true HiPo car, i have not pulled valve covers or anything and the driver fender has no tag. it has a 904 that after a servicing, actually has a pretty firm shift to it, the odo reads around 240,000. i dont know how to tell the difference between the 7.25 and 8.75 rearends and it does have p/s and it has 10" drums. also, it has what looks like 67 seats, or at least 67 skins on 66 seats, not sure what thats about. any info you guys may have feel free to let me know. i found the dog dish caps in the trunk and recently have found the few missing pieces of trim and charger aircleaner thanks to FABO. i have a sbp disc setup that came off a early 70's scamp i believe, that im looking to swap too. i was thinking swapping something different but am starting to lean towards rebuilding the 273. anyway hope my "essay" hasnt bored you all too bad. Welcome to the club Ed. (and welcome to the Mopar world) That's a nice 66 you have there. It looks like a fun driver. You can enjoy it as you're fixing it up. Those west coast cars are so clean compared to those from the rust belt here in the midwest. Mine was an Iowa car but 2 owners ago it was owned by an old guy that didn't drive it in the winter. The next owner had it stored for years and I don't drive it in the snow so mine has had a pretty easy life the last 15 years or so. It helps preserve it.
I don't know of any way to tell if the engine is a true HP except by looking the pistons. They are domed whereas the standard motor has flat tops with 4 valve reliefs. The pistons, carb, intake, air cleaner, valve covers, and dual point dist. make the HP engine and I'll bet that's what you have. Look at the rear axle and if it has a metal cover like a 10 bolt Chevy it will be the 7 1/4. If it has a smooth back like a 9" ford it is the 8 3/4. Most of the automatic cars had 7 1/4's unless they were ordered with the HD package. You have the 10" brakes so you may have the 8 3/4 though. Do you have a front sway bar also? I had better get to work. Keep us posted on your progress. Mike

If you look at your option plate under the hood and there is a 31 code on there, then its a real commando car.

You would have to go to the build sheet for that info. Sales code 31 is a 180hp. 273, whereas a code 32 is a 235hp. 273. The 5th. digit of the vin# is the engine code (D) but does not tell whether it's a HP engine or not. Mike

Heck no. You're not bad. I had to look the code up in the book. LOL tmm
