67/68/69 cuda dilemma

-
Well i got a little more done on the 69 notch. I got it sitting in covered outside storage at a buddys place with the front propped up on a cinderblock since i got it a few years back. I am prepping it for a move to my shop. Had a V8 K frame and lower control arms i got off Dartos awhile back. Also had a set of the large diameter front disc brakes i pieced together out of M body fifth ave, and B body 79 cordoba stuff. Rotors are turned, and coated with Corban35. This will hold off the rust just fine for years. Easily wipes off with laquer thinner and a paper towel.

I figured i would go ahead this week on my vacation time and put the front end it will eventually have under it just temporary so i can at least move it, and get it to my place. I dont have LBJ upper arms ready to go with ball joints, so i just pinned it with the small upper arms to get it back on all 4 wheels. Tomorrow is steering column install day and toss a front bumper on it so it can be pushed around. Looks funky with LBP 15" steelies on the front and SBP 14s on the rear.

I will be temp hanging the 8.8 under the back when i get it home, and installing a set of 15" steelies under the back, and temp hanging all the front end sheetmetal on it along with the correct year hood. Then its at least somewhat complete and in one piece.

Finally got time to get the framerails and crossmembers off the 71 scamp parts car another fabo member and i cut up. Keeping the shock crossmember for my 67. Converting it to double gas tank straps. The transition pan and inner wheelhouses will go into the 69 to replace the butchered up *** end.

I hope i can fit this new transition pan and inner wheel houses back in there through the interior of the car in one piece. The current plan is to strip the undercoating off this, strip the paint and rust, and apply a nice coat of epoxy primer. Then i will store it behind my shop up on blocks until we need it.

I got a care package in from Cosgig yesterday, didnt cost me a pirates ransom either. Got some of the last pieces of sheetmetal i need to unfuck the *** end of this notchback. The trunk hinge supports. I would have to say these things were almost as hard to get as a pirates treasure. Arrrrgggg matey. Not too bad for Michigan rusty either. I do appreciate his effort in this, as he had to deal with a local sourly scalywag with an eyepatch and a plastic parrot on his shoulder whos always looking for pieces of eight everytime Geof shows up.

I have to say though that Geof insists that the brown crusties somehow make the parts more rare, but i think its really a way to slowly chemically mill down a car body, kinda like a slow motion acid dipping. Anyhoo, after peeling off the extra pieces left attached to the supports, i dunked em in the blast cabinet to get a better assessment of what we have, the right lower leg is perforated, but no biggie, i have a spare RH lower leg i can use from the scamp we cut up. I intend to carefully use my spotweld cutter to remove both lower legs and sandblast where the pieces lap together, then i will use some weld thru primer in these spots and some leftover epoxy primer on the remainder of the brackets.

And I didn’t even charge him for those holes, or any of that Michigan “patina”. They were also covered in “barn find dust” , I guess that’s why they’re so rare!!

I hear the "barn dust" should not be transported across state lines.
According to an article from former Gov. Jerry Clown. Guess this falls into the category of cow farts!

Or used to fake patina, because thats just counterfeiting what takes mother nature years to perfect.

Yep just ask Alexandria Occasional Cortex. Shes all up on that stuff along with using Bullet Trains to get to Hawaii

Word on the street is that AOC has already ordered the elimination of barn dust by the year 2029, seems critters that live in barns must’ve “contributed” to her cause, as they have been wrongly corralled into the stereotype that all barns are dirty, and so they must be dirty too! Get it while you can folks, in 2029, all cars must be washed and clean at all times, but from water collected from cow troughs, because they will be outlawed with the cows in ‘31!

Outlawing all fossil fuel cars too. I am already thinking ahead. I am trying to engineer a 500 shaft HP electric motor into the cuda lol.

The day that happens, if somebody has a retrofit kit to electrify muscle cars complete with bellhousing and motor mount adaptors to make it a bolt in, they will be pretty rich.

Okay I won't tell you what I had for lunch that would just add insult to injury
Oh it's even worse than that. The owner of the closest Chic-Fil-A to me, tore it completely down because it was so busy all the time, the parking lot and getting in and out of it was bad enough that by the time you got you food, ate it and then tried to get out of there, you were hungry again and had to get another meal, lol. Now the new design is supposed to be more efficient. Meanwhile, I now have to travel a ways to get to one. At the rate they are rebuilding, my memory will be so bad I'll forget where it was. On the bright side, it is easier to get shirts from some places in a 2X, rather than a 3X. Now where did I leave that candy bar?

Ok,back on topic, got everything dissassembled, and sandblasted between where the brackets sandwich together. I got some thick epoxy primer on them to try to fill the pitting left over from the removed rusty crusties, will hand sand the upper brackets smooth, and apply more primer, then toss em in a box to save for when needed. Will show pix of primer and sanding job later

Also ordered up some 69 fender fishies from Rick over at Laysons. Just an FYI us Fabo members get a 10% off on parts from them. These are the only emblems i am missing from this project. When they arrive i will post pix

I got a set of 68-69 bucket seats coming. In the right color to use for awhile without recovering too. Thanks moparfanatic56. If the rain stays away i will be bringing the 69 home this weekend on a tow dolley. Then i will temp add the front clip, correct hood, the 8.8 under it as soon as i can get that back together, and get it ready for another slumber in my garage until my son is about 10.

It rained friday night.been raining off and on last 2 weeks. Tried today. Got her out from under the carport on a tow dolley, pulled about 30 feet and started slipping. My truck has a locker so i was doing the 2 wheel peel. My buddy and i tried multiple things to get up on harder ground. Nothing worked, so we tarped it and left it right where she sits now. Supposed to stop raining sometime today. Should be 75° and sunny tomorrow. Not sure thats gonna dry things up enough tomorrow. Then 50% chance of rain on monday and tuesday. Supposedly next week wednesday, thursday, friday is supposed to be sunny and dry. Out here the summers are dry and hotter n hell. Springtime around here is unpredictable as heck though.

Well a good friend with a Chevy Colorado with a Duramax got in there and pulled it right out. He said low gear is like driving a tractor. So its finally home now. Got some prep work to do before long term storage in one of my garage bays, and a visit with the DPS before i can get a bonded title. Its even got that beat to **** look, ahem sorry i mean patina. Let the games begin LoL.

I finally got to do a little temp installing of the sheetmetal i got for it after work. Drilled the hinge mount pins for cotter pins. Mounted the 74 dart hood, and started with the fenders. I know all this will have to come back apart, but i just want it somewhat assembled. I plan on stripping everything to clean steel a panel at a time and then epoxy priming it. Kinda making it presentable.

Did a little more tonight. Installed correct 69 hood latch, striker, upper header panel, squared up the nose and screwed down the tops of the fenders. Had to strip the paint off the beak and put a little rattle can primer because i just couldent feel if the hood and header panel were centered with one another. They were, just didnt look or feel that way. Used some 80 grit on my DA and stripped a small part on drivers door to see how deep the rust pitting is. Then hit it with a little rattle can primer just to see. Will strip it back off and probably use naval jelly and some sheet plastic to hold the naval jelly against the door skin to clean out all the tiny pitting.
