67/68/69 cuda dilemma

-
Shes looking like a viable restoration candidate now. Gonna be a rainy day today. Will probably apply the evaporust to the remaining pitting spots on the door, and just do a much needed shop clean up today. Also need to clean out the parts stuffed in the trunk and interior. We were also talking about the welder. He called it fire with wire. I said yes that is correct. I told him its like mommys project glue gun she uses but that the wire is its glue stick and it gets real hot so it can melt and glue metal together.

Sorry brother no deal LoL. It must have been one of those Buyit Jackman car auctions where everybodys got more money than common sense. My son cant stop talking about his cuda, and working on it. So i guess its a done deal lol
I bet the guy who bought it woke up this morning with a hellofva hangover!

That might not be a hangover, that might have been his wife hitting him with a frying pan lines with divorce papers, lol.
I've seen people/companies ask amounts much higher than what I thought 1st and 2nd gen Barracudas normally sell for and didn't know if those barracudas were the current "it" car to have, or if people thought the ripple effect from E bodies bought the A bodies up that much. IDK, not an expert on classic car values. I just know if I had 440K to spend on a 69, mine would be done, my '72 Fury III would be back on the road, house would be paid off and a new 4 car garage would be filled along with my attached 2 car garage.

The only 69 A body barracuda i think is worth a significant amount like that is the Sox and Martin blue notchback coupe that has the only running prototype ball stud Hemi in existance. This was built as an engineering mule and escaped the crusher.

Just went and used paint shaker at work. The primer stirred up great. It is PPG 512X310 urethane compatible epoxy composite primer. Should be just fine on steel. I will take a sample of steel sheetmetal, rough it up, and apply some of this primer. Will do a tape pull test for adhesion maybe sand on it a little when its dry to see how well it adheres to steel before spraying the car with it. If i cant use it, i have a buddy with a corvette who can.

About that $440k 69 barracuda. A fool and their money have just parted ways is all i can say lol. I can think of a lot of **** i can do with $440k. Prob move to the country on about 5 acres, build a bigger shop. Finish both cudas, and do a refresh on my chevy truck, maybe buy a new daily driver. Rent out my current house while keeping its shop as my own personal satellite storage unit.

That's cool, hope it works well.
I still can't decide on a color or type of paint-single stage (I know you prefer that), BC/CC but really been seeing some pearl coats that are awesome.
You know what i say though, don't have to decide today.

I painted my Dart with bc/cc and my Belvedere. I'm not impressed with the durability. I sure didn't like all the sanding steps involved with bc/cc finishes. I painted my CJ-7 with single stage and it was really durable. Just a little color sanding and buffed.
Maybe It's just the black color on the Belvedere but it seems to scratch just looking at it. I haven't noticed any scratching on the Dart. But it's white.
I probably did something wrong when spraying the clear.
Mind you I'm not a professional painter. Far from it!!!!

Yeah, can understand on BC/CC paint jobs. I'm not a painter so I'll have to talk to who I choose. I want to use a single stage original color, but every now and then see a pearlcoat that has such a unique shine that I think looks good. I believe that is a 3 stage paint job, sounds expensive and has to be done "right". I'm actually trying to come up with a paint color that looks like a real barracuda (fish) but has some iridescent shine when light hits it to look like fish scales when light hits them. Weird I know, but as I told Matt, even here in VA we have a special plate called "Save the (Chesapeake) Bay. It is colorful and around it there is sea grass and a crab in the lower corner and I think a sea shell. So, trying to keep the "fish" and water thing going.

One part i really wanted to deal with was the dent on top of the LH quarter that was just filled up with bondo. It eventually cracked and rusted pretty badly. This thing bothered me since i got the car. I have been wanting to strip it down and see whats under there and the extent of it.

I sanded back the paint and bondo. I then used muriatic acid and a small wire brush to clean ALL the pitting out around the perimeter. Then i neutralized it with a water and TSP solution. Forgot to take a pic of the cleaned out metal, but it was nice and clean. No brown flecks in it at all.

I had mixed up a small sample of that PPG light grey primer, and used it on a sanded down test piece. It adhered great. So i used what was left to seal up the clean pitted metal in this area, then i applied some Evaporust gel to the rest and covered it up with plastic. More than likely i will eventually be cutting this section out, fabbing up , and welding in a new piece of sheet steel to replace the severely pitted part, but for now i am going to derust it, bang it out and apply primer sealer.

I noticed the bottom of the decklid is rusted thru. There were some holes drilled in it at the top back edge. I am assuming for a rear deck spoiler at one point in time. Water poured in over the years and ate it from the inside. I may try to fix it, or i maybe on the hunt for a better condition coupe decklid. May concider bolt on fiberglass one if it can be latched with a key and not a hood pin type of thing.

Tomorrow the last of the evaporust gets removed from the door. Some small spot welds to fill in trim holes as 69 coupes did not have window ledge trim. I think the drivers door was from a 69 fastback because of the trim spear. Passenger side door is a 67 coupe door. Will be modding it to be a 69 door. Also need to fill in the 2 rivet holes drilled in for the cover that was put over the mirror hole. Will do a little plastic work monday, and hopefully some spray primer, and see how it looks.

Got him vacuuming out junk in the trunk. Welded up and ground down old riveted on mirror hole cover holes, and 69 fastback trim holes in drivers door.

Trunk floor is pretty decent actually except for where tubs were cut in, and the spare tire well rust. I got a really nice spare well from a fabo member who removed it to put in a fuel cell, and i cut sections out of the Plymouth Scamp center trunk floor i had, so i could section them in where the tubs were cut in. I drilled off the spare tire bracket. Its pretty damn solid. It has a date with the sandblaster.

Applied bondo yesterday, Sanded it down with a bit of 180 grit this afternoon. Applied evercoat fine scratch filler and sanded w 220. Pic is from yesterday right after i applied it. Everything smoothed out and feathered out real nice. I have one spot at lower door charactor line that i sanded too far and had to apply a little more filler. Really want to put this in 2k primer tomorrow evening to seal it up and admire our work, then get started on the fender.
