Bought a Frankenstein 69 Dart, someone put a 74 Duster sheet metal on the front of the car. Got a good deal on it, has 4 brand new tires and wheels on it. Wife made the guy sell the car. Plus I got another set of wheels and tires with the car.

Since this is being posted in the Race section, we (me) are building this car to run in the sportsman class (12 flat and slower) at LVMS, that class seems to be lacking cars. Driver to named at a later dated...LOL Plus this wont be done until this fall at least.

Body seems to be in decent condition, could only see a few rust spots in one quarter behind the passenger side wheel. Has nice seats and headliner. Someone hacked the dash were the radio goes but we will fix that later.

The goal is to use parts that I already have and not buy anything. I had to pay for machine work on the block, bored and honed with plate was 250 plus the shop charged 100 dollars to repair 6 head bolts with helicoils. Plus 95 dollars to turn crank to 10/10. I will have to spend money to get a 8 3/4 housing under it. Got a couple wider ones that can be narrowed. Got several center sections already to choose from. (4.30- 4.56 with spools)

The motor is a 273 that is frozen. Will not turn over. Has hooker headers, eddy performer, eddy 1405 carb, and small aluminum radiator, these parts probably will not be used.

What confused me was that there was a 69 Dart grille in the front seat. Then I realized it would not fit and figured out it had a newer sheet metal. Sold the grille at the last mopar at the strip. Bought a 74 grille and bezels from FABO member. The car has large bolt pattern on all 4 wheels, looks like at 8 1/4 in the rear. A stocker friend wants the 273.

So a 360 .030 is being assembled with 116hp pistons...H beam rods. Both have been sitting on the shelf for years. Thought about using kb107 pistons but the 116hp are close to stock piston weight, the H beams are heavy they weigh 745 grams like a stock rod. Save money on balancing.

I had to buy a rear main seal from Autozone....but I got pan gasket and end seals...LOL

Got the short block almost done. Using a Lunati cam 302007401
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 243/251
  • Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .546/.566
  • LSA/ICL: 110/106
Was degreeing in the cam on friday afternoon, kept coming up with the wrong number so I called it a weekend.

The parts list for rest of build is as follows..

002/003 SS Springs bought many years ago...only a few runs down track.
CE adjustable shocks front and rear.
Slicks with be either 9x28 or 8.5x 26 depending on what fits.
Rear end 8 3/4 with 4.30 plus a set of Doctor Dif rear axles.
904 TF with TA manual valve body.
TCI 8 inch converter flashes to 4700 as told...LOL
electronic ignition and msd 6 box of some sort.
Heads are J heads with 2.02/1.60. They are used off a running engine, came in trunk of another 71 Duster. They were pretty clean with bronze guide and dual springs. Used some lapping compound and reset the spring height at 1.67. Dont know what valve springs they are yet.

Eddy air gap intake or maybe even an old Holley Strip Dominator...
Holley 750 DP or VS depending how fast it is running or not running.
TTi headers ...old previously used chrome set...

Compression appears to be around 9.5 to 1 ....it needs to run on pump gas or maybe e85 since the other 3 already do.

I hope you finished degreeing the cam and installed it before you put the rods and Pistons in it.

Otherwise, it's more difficult than it needs to be.

Been doing it my way for 30 plus years...thanks..

Ran the number twice and both times came up with 112...not 106...was tired so I called it a day and took the weekend off. Probably had the crank gear on the wrong hole..lol

Might do a minitub and move the springs in since of the rear end I have has the perches already welded in the correct place for that.

I have an 8.25, haven't verified it but believe it to be open diff. If you have a posi there and are interested in selling please let me know. Me and the wife get over to Vegas once in awhile, have yet to make it to the speedway. We would make the short trip North to see this car run, the timing could work out who knows. Good luck with your project and thanks for the cool post!

Did you end up running the KB107's?

No..I used the 116hp wanted so save a dollar or two by not balancing it....The static compression works out to 9.5 to 1 with the iron heads...

Amazing what a couple days away from that engine does....

I had some MP solid lifter cams in boxes...as we all know they have no PN on them. I knew there was a couple of the oval cams, a 528 @ 106 and a 571 lift and one was marked 557. I decided to slide them into this engine and find what was what. Yes, now i got the 528, 571 cams tagged, but the 557 was a 590.

And then I slide a 557 cam into the engine, was going to use it instead of the Lunati, after two tries I had it degreed....What I figured out was went I used the Advance 4 degrees on the crank sprocket was I getting 10 degrees of cam timing change...Going straight up I was at 110....and now applying that knowledge to the Lunati I put a 2 degree cam keyway in it and I hit 108, ok...switch out keyway to 4 degree on camshaft...Bingo...105.5....looking for 106....

Had to BUY head gaskets....they are here...So heads and timing chain cover can go on...

The car won't mind waiting while you take care of business.

Sorry for the loss.

Sorry to read about your mother. Condolences to you and the family.

Well I broke one promise to use parts I have...found a 904 on craigslist that had "recent rebuilt" for 50 dollars and came with a "3500 stall converter" like all converters sold on craigslist...LOL....figured I would use this trans ...just open it up and check things out...will see....

Anyway picked it up this afternoon...notice the converter...pulled it off the trans to make it easier to pick up...then I noticed marking on it...

PTC 9.5 TF-6 plus some more numbers...Probably really is a 3500 stall converter...LOL...not a bad deal I would say. The guy wanted it out of his shop.

do you run 9" converters in any of your stuff?

Sorry to hear about mom,, I'm waiting for that call too. My mom is 97.She already out lived one of her kids....Hope to meet up with up with you at MATS this year.

FrankenDart might be in for a new front end......72 Duster......If everything survives MATS I will start working on this project....Shooting for a TNT in September...or maybe sooner.....
