73' B3 340 Duster pro touring build

-
We're going to cut the frame/floorpan out of that shiny new silver Duster? Sweet! I'll be on the next flight... But you gotta help me build sexy wheel tubs...

After Seeing Swisswill's Dart I actually thought about doing the same thing without the cool viper suspension, I wanted to give it the Chassis car stance, its all about the stance !!!!!!!!

CUT IT! CUT IT! CUT IT!!!!! But do something easier than Viper Suspension, do C5; too much redesign of the front suspension needed to make Viper stuff work.

When you find yourself half way down on the second page of the Members Restoration section you know it time for a update... As SwissWill said on the previous reply Cut it, Cut it...I kinda did but not as he was suggesting. I was going to replace the front leaf spring hangers with the ones in the first pic below, but after seeing the condition of the frame underneath the brackets (second pic) I decided to go back to the drawing board and cut out some longer ones that would go through the existing frame and tie in the relocation boxes for my lower link bar. I was going to add torque boxes but these things will support a tank (3/16") ..... I'm already into the overkill catagory so this will be enough for now... oh yea the white paper template is going to be for support for the triangulated 4 link to frame brackets (kinda like the $3995.00 ones from Unlawful racing) but built for a lot less.

It was nice to briefly meet you at the Mopar show at the Summit store yesterday. (I was the one who asked to get a look at your car which was only a mile away) Sorry you had to go to that funeral home. Catch you next time.

Yea I'm sorry I didn't have more time, It's always nice to get a diffrent opinion on the build. Didn't get home till 8 o'clock. If your ever planning a trip this way again shoot me a PM.

So I had some quality water jet time earlier this week and after getting my overpriced non-fitting Art Morrison 2 piece back brace (1st pic). I decided to design something that would fit better and give a diffrent one-off look....I also made a aluminum frame bracket and after a couple changes, cut the final ones out of steel (3/16") for the triangulated 4 link. The back brace is 3 seperate pieces fully welded together on the back side.

while ya got the water jet fired up....what do you think about stiffin up the shock mount/crossover since your switching to coilovers/4bar....or do you use something different that is redesigned for that package?...you are probably way ahead of me

Cutting those slots out just made places for water, rocks, mud, etc etc etc to get into. Prolly should of just kept it closed and welded the brace on with a weld through primer on the inside.

Riddler

yeaaaaah riddler...you got a point...but I like the weight loss and the "looks cool" factor....just sayin'

I just can't justify a brace unless your sportin' a sticky set of 14x32's....we literally flogged the livin' sh$t out of those 8 3/4 in our day..street and strip...and never..ever broke one

Riddler I think you have a point it probably will collect dirt and so on, but hey that just means more time to spend on the car cleaning right?

76orangewagon, It will look nice from the back though, Are you planning on chroming the piece on the rear end or just leaving it black?

There are going to be side to side and front to back bars to support and tie together the shock/coilovers and front link mount, the area's that don't have the 2" hole's
are where the side to side bars go. check out the link to what I"m trying to follow as far as design and look, of coarse it wont be the exact same but in the ballpark.

Darn it, I didnt think about collecting dirt, rocks.....It will be powder coated satin black like the front K frame and since it' a going to be just as clean on the underside I wont be letting much dirt collect anyway except when the wife takes it down the 1320......

All I can say is, I am glad I did not see that unlawful racing site earlier I probably would have done my rear end like that way.
I am not going to be racing mine but man does that look good. I would probably get it just for the wow factor.

Thats ok I like my leaf spring set-up have to stay some what traditional.
Maybe my next project.

The WOW factor is right, once I saw thier set up I really wanted one but for $4k it was not going to happen, But now that my new base has a Water Jet I felt I could come close to making it myself for a greatly reduced cost, I figure I should have around $1k in it when it's done, I will make some changes to thier design so I'm not a total copycat but the cage system from the front to back is a must.

man ...thats some cool sh$t at the Unlawfull site...makes me kinda feel like mines is from the (Fred Flint)stone age

well yabba dabba do, I guess I am in that club with you.
Glad I got a new pair of shoes when I drag my feet to stop the car. LOL

Yes, It looks impressive with all the bracing and bars but it still a basic concept triangulated 4 link that everybody else sells or builds and thats all I basically want to, but if I can add the smoke and mirrors for minimal work and cost then I'm all for that. I would hardly say your car/suspension is stone age, your too T-Granger. Thanks for the comments, it's nice to know people are watching the progress.

we...all of us.... definately have our eyeballs on this build...and I agree ..the concepts the same....yours really looks....tricker...I didn't want to say sexier (ya' know...for manhood reasons)

Understood.....Someone might get the wrong impression and think this is a diffrent type of forum

It was a productive day yesterday for the Duster. First, picked up the fenders from Stripmasters in Rootstown, Ohio. Second, My suspension parts showed up. these things are overkill but I like it that way, and third got the old shock crossmember removed without to much damage to the floor (a couple spot weld holes to fix). This also will give me about 2.750" more room for the coilovers...looks like its definatley fuel cell time !!!! Also included a pic of the tool I made to accuratley measure the rear axle width, simple to use... just bolt it to your wheels and adjust, lock it down, remove and measure....mine came out to 49.5", now minus rotor thickness & axle offset. I should be about a 44" housing but I will contact the axle manufacture to get the exact axle offset measurement before cutting. I also made some brackets to weld (temporarily)the axle at ride height to the car while I mock up the suspension this way I can rotate the car and not have the axle move around. (pics to follow on that one)
