Swapping my 3spd to a 4spd.. I have the two trannys sitting side by side and I'm noticing some differences.. The 4spd input shaft is maybe a 1/4 inch longer than the 3spd shaft.. Also, the output shaft on the 4spd is a bigger diameter.. I guess I was under the impression that it would be an easy, even swap.. Any thoughts..? Do I have the wrong trans to do the swap.. It's going into a 72 Demon, and the 4spd, I was told came out of a Dart.

No, that's the correct transmission. It's not a 100% bolt in swap. There are some small differences. The input shaft is a non issue, though. The two transmissions do not share the same bellhousing patterns, but I see you have the dual pattern bellhousing, so you're good there. slip yoke of course, you'll have to change.

The input shaft difference won't be an issue.
The output shaft will require a different yoke (same spline as a 727) but you can use your existing driveshaft.
Just make sure the front bearing retainers are the same diameter. It appears they are...

Nothing at all wrong with an A230.

Sell the 4 speed & use the money for gas to keep driving with the 3-speed. ;-)

What's with the shifter/ rod arrangement? The out board shift leaver should be for reverse and the inboard leaver should be for 3/4.

The seller said they were heavy duty shift rods.. I'm not sure.

I'm not at all a tranny guy...can you explain..? Are the rods in the wrong locations..?

My pistol grip has the four speed button...that's that's why I went with the 4..lol

I was going to hang on to it so it could go with the car if / when I sell it.. Is there a market for a230's..?
meh, somewhat I guess. If I found one local for under 200 I'd go get it. They are every bit as strong as the non Hemi 4 speed. It's a good transmission, people just prefer a 4 speed.

I bought this car in January..full intensions on keeping it as close to factory as possible..as it was a semi survivor.. BUT, I kept going in a direction in buying things and chaging things to want I want...lol

I was actually looking forward to keeping the original 3spd in the car...I bought this car in January..full intensions on keeping it as close to factory as possible..as it was a semi survivor.. 72 318 3spd 3.23 Hemi Orange Demon... BUT, I kept going in a direction of buying things and changing things to what I wanted.. It was a bench seat car, I bought year correct buckets and back seat.. I replaced the factory mammoth steering wheel with an OEM Tuff Wheel.. Pistol grip shift handle.. Pulled the tired warranty engine to set in a 71 318 with 4 bbl and I heads.. Again, it may or may not matter when I sell the car if I keep all the original stuff to offer to a buyer..guess as usual, it would just come down to the buyer..

I'll probably call Dan directly.. He's been extremely helpful with any stupid Q's I've had.. Really nice guy.

Yeah I think there in the correct order, but I don't know what room there's going to be with that reverse rod to the cross member.

In response to the demand for the a230/a250 3 speeds, not very much for the wide ratio, except for the occasional oval track racer. Several people I’ve talked to (one who had a new 340 duster with a 3 speed with 3.91 gears) love the close ratio versions that came with 340 and 400 magnums. The ratio list is as follows
For slant sixes and 318
1st 3.08
2nd 1.7
3rd 1.0
R 2.9

for 340 and 400s
1st 2.55
2nd 1.49
3rd 1
R 3.34[/QUOTE]
