So, last month I was able to locate a 46RH in Los Vegas for a great price! $400 but the guy wasn't interested in shipping so my buddy and I made the snap decision and bombed out to Vegas in the middle of the night! Needless to say we got the transmission and now I'm ready to tear it down and rebuild it. first thing first I tore it down and cleaned up the case cause she was a dirty girl.. Upon opening up the pan I noticed shavings and flake in the pan BUT everything was clean and looked new'ish? After breaking everything down I couldn't find the source of the shavings. I did notice all the steels are used and have wear but the clutches look to be new but lightly used as if rebuilt with a few miles.

So yesterday I was able to take the overdrive unit and my "self made" press tool and unload the 830lbs spring and disassemble the overdrive clutch pack. that's when I notice the wear on the over drive hub... Think I found the source for the flake and shavings.. Looks like the clutch pack for the final drive ( the clutches out side the "C" clip ) were slipping on the hub... My guess is 1st through 3rd were fine but once these clutches were engaged at 44mph that it chattered really bad and the guy must have thought he was about to chuck a drive shaft... lol Easy fix tho.. New hub ordered, I also notice the kick down leaver has porosity and damage at the servo seat/pin. so ordered a new one it was a 2.5 so I ordered a 2.9 and I also have a 3.2 if needed. Other than these I did notice some heat in both of the bands so they will be replaced as well as all the thrust washers show normal wear for a high mileage trans mission.

How many of these have you done? Is the wear on that hub common?

Glad you found the issue.. nothing worse than finding shavings and not finding what got shaved :)

BTW.. are those trans pure mechanical OD? no electronic controller?

I've done a few and have seen wear but not at this extent... if you look at the closeup picture of the hub above, at the top plane of the hub you can see how the tooth is not only rounded on the edge but also worn to a saddle at the top of the tooth. I've never seen this before...

Right! They are a Hydraulic/ mechanical OD. using line pressure. The RH dose have a elc. control but can be converted with a kit form PATC.

ok.. that's damn cool... thanks :)

$400 for what turned out to be a core does seem steep to me.
Be sure to trade that converter for a fresh one. Id bet it's full of shavings, no way to get rid of those without tearing it apart

Considering I've got three cores (one 46RH, one 42 RH & one 42 RE) I paid $50 a piece for, yeah $400 is kinda steep...

Geez thanks for making me feel like utter ****...:poke: I bet you guys don't have to pay for sex either!?!?!
- Where the **** was your offering when I was looking for this trans last month asking everyone and there mother if they had one for sale... :p

It was the cheapest at that moment I could find... Core or not it will be BadAss when I'm done :icon_fU:

Still love you both...

FWIW The 46RH has already found a home & the two 42's are gonna make one 42RH and it has been assigned a home... So while I saw you were looking mine weren't available... I bought them for a purpose... I deal with guys who deal in scrap all the time & in their world getting $50 for a trans core is a score... Typically the trans gets scrapped with all the other trash... And in that situation they get about $3...

don't listen to the whole i got [part] for $10 and a burrito. that's the exception not the rule.

yeah, you *could* get this or that or the other thing with a whole right place, right time, right connection. anybody could.

the reality is pyp wants $250 + $125 core, then tack on tax and "environmental fee" so figure four and change. i think you did swell.

and, i look forward to following along with the antics!

So I finally received the parts needed to complete the over drive build as well as the rest of the transmission. I was able to jump on the press this morning and finish the assembly of the overdrive clutchPak and planetary gears. When I get home tonight I finish the tail housing assembly. I've already replaced the yoke seal and tailshaft bearing and sleeve.

Last night I went through and rebuilt the front pump and replaced all the clutch packs in the 1st n 2nd hub, only to find a missing plastic spacer in the front hub behind the wafer spring. It had been replace with a snap ring. So I order the correct spacer which now stall my build till I receive that.

-Does any one know if this is some kind of upgrade or trick to make the trans stronger? I wasn't able to find anything on replacing the plastic spacer with a snapring

All the clutches look new but have heat burn in them, steels all used. but all the hard parts look fine and come apart and goes back together easily.
I'm replacing all the bands as well due to them having the same burn. I also took the time to burn in a drain plug to the pan as I hate removing the pans full... ugh.
The guy I got this from had it in a Durango behind a 5.9. it was lifter and built like a pre-runner so I have no drought this was abused at some point. But other wise everything looks good. I'll post more pictures tonight.

This is a great thread. Thanks for posting all of the photos!

Can you do me a huge favor and see how far those governor tubes stick out from the extension housing mounting surface? I made the mistake of setting mine face down on the flat garage floor and they got slightly tweaked. I'm trying to get them as close as possible to how they should be. Thanks!

Also, where were you able to buy the new hub?

Sure thing, when I get home tonight I'll get a few pic's and the measurements you need!

I got the hub from transpartsonline.com I'm also getting the front hub spacer from them as well.

Okay so after work I reassembled the over drive tail housing and got the measurements you needed. The hydraulic tubes extend past the edge of the case by 0.236" just under 1/4". I also got the measurement off the front case where the tubes intersect and it protrudes into the tale housing 0.416" for a total of 0.652" of contact. Hope this helps..

That helps tremendously! Just measured mine and the tubes stick out 0.260" from the mounting surface, so I should be good. I got scared when I saw the tips of the tubes kind of flattened, but looks like yours are like that too, so that definitely eases my mind. Thank you again! I appreciate it.

Yesterday I received the needed forward hub spacer so I was able to finish putting the clutch pack together. Then I check the tolerance for both clutch packs, both well with in spec. waiting on a few more small bits but I'm hoping to finish then transmission this weekend.

On Sunday I was able to finish the initial build of the transmission. I still have the valve body to deal with an the install of the Patc kit. I'm not planning on installing a shift kit in it at the moment, but I will go through it a clean it up and make sure everything is in good working order. I will do that this week.

slick little set up there for the build stand! something you had laying around or special construction just for the job?

Naw, I watched a guy on youtube awhile ago while looking for transmission build info, build it and thought it was slick so I built one for myself. The youtube channel is "Transmission Bench" he makes how to vids for rebuilding transmissions.
