Build thread- 73 duster, forged 5.7 w/ PS and AC, 5 spd, big brakes and floater rear

-
My rear is not factory width. It's 60". A B body rear that is 60.125" would be good (1968-1970?). I also have 1/2" dr diff offset spring hangers. They are probably closer to 3/8" offset.

As it sits, I've only got .125" clearance from the tires to the leaf spring clamp. I ordered some steel 1/4" spacers, and I'll probably look into permanently fixing them to the rear hubs, if I have to have them. I'd love to find a leaf spring with the clamp in a different spot, as I'd have probably 3/8" clearance at that point.

Also, these wheels restrict the turning radius in the front. The tire hits the frame.

Rear tire clearance with no spacer:

A few pictures to update the thread:

Painted the engine bay. Notched the fender for valve bolt clearance.

Stance of the car sitting on bump stops in the front and the rear too high.

Is that scoop a factory one? Would you sell it since it looks like you are goin to stuff the hilborns through the hood.
It looks really nice it sits perfect.

I think it's a factory scoop, and no, i'm planning on keeping it. Thanks for the compliment!

Ok

Do you have a pic of the gauges mounted in the dash? How are you mounting the panel to the dash? Where did you get the panel?

I've got them in the panel, but not mounted in the car yet. I just used clear epoxy. I'll paint it before it goes in the car. I think the only place that sells that panel is New Vintage, and they require you to buy gauges from them.

Looking good man. Seems like I'm about in the same spot on my b body

Thanks

Looks like a need a different wiper motor. The Hilborn is hitting the wiper motor. What do I need? I know nothing of wipers. I have a 2 speed wiper motor in it right now. The dash is out, so I can change the switch if needed.

And for those who have been following - the headers I made DO fit with the power steering box. Not much clearance (1/4") in a few spots. I might need to add a power steering cooler and keep a temp gauge on it.

:prayer: Man....those stacks are wild! You will need a 3 speed wiper motor and linkage, plus a switch. I just snagged the same stuff from a member here to use on my 70 Duster with a 5.7 You mainly just need the crank arm that goes on the back of the 3 speed motor, and the piece of linkage that goes from that crank arm to the first wiper pivot. Try to get the wiring that's under the hood too if you can. The wiring under the dash is the same for a 2 speed or 3 speed motor, and the plug that hooks to the switch is made to fit either a 2 or 3 speed switch. That has been my experience in swapping 2 other A bodies from 2 to 3 speed wipers. Buy all new linkage bushings too....ALL of em! You can get em at the dealership, or off the Help rack at the local parts house. I've found if you replace all the plastic wiper bushings at once, it will save pitching a cuss fit when you get stuck in the rain! :violent1: Good luck.

I love this build. I really can't wait to get to my motor. I've still be looking at 6.1's but I'm also doing the math and a stroker might get me further with all the 5.7 stuff I have.

With the 6.1 crank, K1 rods and Wiseco pistons, what does that work out to in cubic inches?

Thanks for the rundown! Just what I was looking for!

Who makes the stack setup?

Hilborn actually makes it.

348 ci - 3.58 stroke, 3.937 bore, 6.243 rod. I think I've got $1050 in pistons and rods (and rings, pins) shipped from wiseco. Add for rod and crank bearings. If you don't have a 6.1 crank laying around, I vote stroker!

That hilborn set up s a gas!

Thanks!

Figured I'd update the tread with some pictures.

Picked the ride height, set the pinion angle, made sure the driveshaft fit, made rear brake caliper brackets, used CTS-V pads on the viper calipers (which is the size of pad used on the ACR-X), installed the rear sway bar, got the AC Condenser, Oil Cooler, and power steering cooler mounted, and mounted new seats. Here's a few pics:

Ride height (this height gives 3" of compression in the front before metal on metal - no bump stop installed at the moment):

Still need to change the wiper motor to a 3 speed so the hilborn fits, fit exhaust mid pipes, run fuel lines, brake lines, oil cooler/accusump lines, hydraulic clutch lines, radiator hoses, make a top radiator mount, and wire the entire car, including the megasquirt 3x harnesses.

A few more

Mark VII fan trimmed ~1/2" mounted to my 4" radiator (barely fits- glad the hemi leaves lots of room):

clearance with the 18's vs tie rod and caliper - tight! BTW- it takes 18's to run whatever backspace you want (17's hit the tie rod):
