considering a 72 scamp

-
Well i finally bought it 1 year later. I must have been asleep or drunk when i failed to notice 1 rotted quarter panel, but she's otherwise solid.

I rebuilt the holly 1920, changed the fuel filter and rubber lines and she fired right up and idled. Drove her home with the trans slipping like crazy. Check the fluid, 2quarts low. Topped it off and now it shifts solid and drives great. Taken it to work twice, no problems yet.

The PO lowered the heck out of the front end with the torsion bars and put 60 series tires on it and never adjusted the alignment so she's squirrely as hell above 35. Will address that this weekend. Also replacing shocks with a set of new air shocks that came with the car.

Otherwise no complaints other than the super weak blower motor for the fan (bad ground maybe?) need to do some little things, replace some vacuum lines and hoses and adjust the valves/timing and idle but at least she's back on the road after sitting for 3 years.

oh and there's a noise like a horny owl coming from under the hood, sounds like loud alternator noise.

Update on horny owl noise and other small steps:

Using the tried and true "screwdriver as stethoscope" method I was able to confirm that the bad bearing (horny owl) noise was coming from my alternator. Since I want to install a better stereo with a large amp this is a great time to go with a larger unit. I am taking recommendations if anyone has advice what to buy for a better than stock alternator.

Today I returned the scamp to a more reasonable ride height by adjusting the torsion bars, I got lucky and the bolts weren't frozen so it was quick and easy and the car rides much better now. Now its time for new (non-60 series) tires.

I also hooked up a timing light and vacuum gauge and go the idle mixture and timing set correctly. What a difference! Lost that dead spot and its starting easier as well. I was only able to get 8 degree btdc because of the plate so maybe tomorrow I'll pull the dizzy and move the plate.

Also I had a run in with some seedy looking characters at the local autozone who, without warning started pulling dents out of my fender then tried to shake me down for 500 bucks. They did a decent job so I laughed at them and gave em 50 bucks. Worth it to me and a good story. Got to love Brooklyn.

The Scamp has been a pleasure to drive and real success. Will post more pictures and a video soon.

slant's do not like overdrive tranmisions it's probably got 2 something gears and with the overdrive the r's will be way to low for the motor to perform at it's best maybe in the 1000 - 1200 range at 55 or 60 which would kill the motor

Yeah, that and the cost have made the OD a non-option. I'm just keeping it stock and fixing it and accepting the 20mpg upper limit which is fine. If i do better through good tuning and careful driving then good. if not, thats fine to.

Welcome to the greatest car site in the world.

Drove the scamp from Brooklyn out to my folks lake house in Hopatcong NJ. 100+ miles round trip. Did really well! 20mpg average (based on my gps, the speedo is busted), it used a lot of coolant (need to instal an overflow tank) but it felt amazing to put the miles on it. Me and my lady then drove around on the winding country roads, bought some fishing rods and did some fishing. Also scored a really nice old bench vice and some new speakers for the scamp for 45bucks at a garage sale! Awesome weekend!

Sweet deal-glad to hear she's treating you well. That slant will probably last till the apocalypse comes. I have a speedo in my garage if you're interested-PM me...
