I knew I'd get the smart sensible response! Not what I want but definitely what I need and what I'll do. It's just fun looking at parts and trying to map the next move.

Fun for today. I ordered a new derale 17118 fan and it came today while I was studying. Was excited to get home and be able to take my mind off study material and work on the car to try and get it put back together... Not happening as I was sent the wrong fan

I guess I still have other things to put back together on the car to pass the time .

Oh I definitely know what you mean about looking at new parts , we all get carried away sometimes. I tell my son " get it running and drive it, enjoy it, get to know it, how it drives, handles ect." Then when something pops up that's not "right" (which it will as its 50 years old) fix it. He's almost 18, has big plans for it but is realizing that it's more fun to drive . (We have winter to work on upgrades). Besides, I think your "helper" is ready for another ride in her purple car!!

Oh she wants it to be done for sure so do I, it just takes time when I only get to so 1-2 hrs a day working on it right now.

I also read this last night but forgot to respond. After I read it I found this... I believe I have read some threads stating it's better to run old 273 roller rockers with rods to correct length than to buy some "cheaper" rollers with a roller cam. I wonder if this dude has any 273 rollers I have an addiction

The rabbit hole is very hard to resist sometime. Many of us have been there. In order to not waste time or money and save frustration ask yourself what your want this car to do. Do you want a 13 second car? Do you want to run autocross? Once you know what you need out of this vehicle its easier to get there. The factory hardware is very capable, understanding how parts and systems work together is key in the tuning process. Your current 340/727/8 3/4 is easily capable of being quick enough to scare the average person. You may be surprised what a good tune and a set of drag radials will do with you current setup.

Yea I feel like Alice in wonderland with my rabbit hole. I think part of the problem is I have the car apart and it's not driving if it was I would probably be enjoying the crap out of how it is currently, I know we were before it went under the knife. I can't work on it late at night when I am up and the family is asleep, only get to work on it a little bit while they are up and I'm not studying. So my problem is reading about the car, different parts, different set ups and so on; then looking for the parts on craigslist/offer-up/facebook marketplace and in FABO.

I take my national boards exam next Tuesday so after that I'll have more time to get the thing dialed in if I don't have it put back together by then.

What do I want for the car?... I want the car to run and run good/great. I want it to start up and drive no problem and to not worry about the car breaking down while I am out with the family. The car will never see the track, I'm not much of a track person. I probably won't ever go to a dyno and get an accurate hp number, but I want the car to be fun and fast on the street (which like you said it probably already is with it's current set up). I want lobe, love hearing old big motor cars sound like they are about to die at the light then shoot off like a bat out of hell when the light turns green :)

After I have all that, I will end up changing my mind all over again and the process will start from the beginning again. I have to have something to tinker on and continue to mess with. Whether it be engine, drive train, exterior or interior. I'm that one friend that goes crazy if I'm not doing something hence the ADHD. lol

Sounds like your the same as 99% of us. We putter on our cars, get them to were we think we want them, get used to how it runs/handles, THEN we want a little more : ie. handling , reliability, power ect. It doesn't hurt to start looking and getting ideas for possible routes to go with your build. Sounds like you got it under control...exams then "play time"!! Good luck on your exams.

A completely stock 340, that is tuned up and running right will give you everything you need (except the lopey idle, which is silly).

Yea cam to big = power drain

I was just trying to explain the whole love of the sound of a Cam'd, old big motor Mopar

just be glad you only have one, I have 6 total, 4 cars and two trucks, my 2016 Challenger is the only one that doesn't need anything but gas. LOL

wait till you get in that rabbit hole

So I usually go study in the morning, but my wife is termed as a "high risk pregnancy," so she has monitoring 2x a week. Since I'm on "break" and just have to study for boards I offered to stay and watch our little girl while she goes to the Dr for monitoring. Also staying home allows me to work on the car for a couple hours. Plus it might help me get lucky...

...With her allowing me to buy more car parts Get your minds out of the gutter guys, I'm married we don't do those things!

Anyway, I got the driver's side all buttoned up. Headers tightened down, motor mounts bolted back up, mini starter installed and hooked up. I just have to now unbolt the motor mount on the passenger side and do the header in that side. My new hopefully correct fan should be in today, then I'll get the front put together as well .

Ps- I ordered, or so I thought the header bolts with Allen/socket heads, but nope they came in and are just regular socket heads. They're a ***** to get in.

Personally, I have never been a fan of the Allen head bolts. too many bad experiences with those things.

I just picked up some high quality cap screws from a good hardware store... no need to wait on the fedx. Another thing I like to do is go cut down the allen wrench to about 1/4" (the side that engages into the cap screw). It makes it MUCH easier to install and torque these bolts.

Rookie,
I have around a dozen, just keeping up with the licences, safety inspections, and insurance is as bad as restoring them.
And the old drivers always have issues, just last week my sons car was shooting gas out between the tailight and the bumper, busted fuel line, 97 status.
I had it towed down to my buddies repair shop, to have it fixed, apparently it is low on his priority list, because he did not touch it yet. It has been a week and 1/2. I guess never tell a mechanic you are in no hurry to have it repaired.

One day I'll have extra cars besides this one like the two of you. Right now, this one is keeping me plenty busy.

My old toys are a 73 duster, which is restored, a 70 challenger, which is one of my future projects, no drivetrain, but a nice body.
An old 70 cuda drag car, which needs alot of tlc, and a rusted out bad 70 cuda 340 4-speed parts car.
That is just the mopar toys.
And lots of jeeps, restored 48 Cj jeep, my wifes 80 Cj jeep, very nice.
And old sweet Honda civic I just picked up with only 54K miles on it.
Not counting the new drivers, 4-wheelers, motercycles etc.

When will this madness end.

The wife has already previously agreed to me having 7, that includes new and old vehicles as long as we can afford it and it's after dental school lol .

:welcome: I think I have that same addiction. I'm sitting at 4 "project" vehicles, 2 daily drivers and maybe a 3rd coming up.... and about a dozen spare engines. **** I need to downsize!

Studying today, but during a quick break to regroup I found this... brand new 75 bucks with lifters, so right about half price Again, I don't know cams and I just search for Mopar parts for no real reason. Its just fun and gets my mind off the different **** I have to actually know for my test .

I’m gonna throw this out there. Contact Ken at Oregon Cam grinders. For nearly the same price as that summit cam, they can custom grind you a cam. You’ll just tell them your combo, the intend use and they will cut the cam to your car. I’ve seen guys that do that, pick up 3-5 percent more power than guys who use off the shelf cams.

That's what I've read in here, Oregon cams! Thanks for reinforcing it!

I'm just browsing, I won't buy anything ( but 75 bucks with lifters is cheap) especially not knowing 1- what a camshaft is (I know what it is and where it is, just a lot of #s with cams get confusing .kind of like the Krebs cycle and clotting factors lol) 2- what my application is and how to decide what cams would fit my application 3- how to install and measure everything

I have realized about cams is they are kind of like a woman. Hard to find the right one, everyone has an opinion on which is right and I'll always be wrong.

This is the fan you need to work w a fan clutch. They come in different diameter sizes and come In clockwise rotation and counter clockwise rotation. If you put a thick radiator in, you can use a Hayden 2765 fan clutch with centering bushing for a 1990 jaguar XJ6. Its shorter than the stock fan clutch. Helps make it fit better w thicker radiators..
