This project started mid 2018 when earlier in the spring I picked up a 72 duster for my son and to play with. Well it didn't take long for him to line up his own car to start on. Well actually three, two 74 dusters with titles and a 74 duster parts car. All three didn't have motors or transmissions. But he had his own car to work on. In classic young man fashion he wanted to slap one together and go. But got him talked in to taking his time and putting the work into doing it right from the ground up. So my 72 has become the parts runner and weekend driver to tide him over till his is up and running.

I will post up some pics and some details to get us caught up on the project to where we are now in the next few days. Been meaning to start this thread for some time.

Also I would like to thank everyone here for the vast amount of information that is available here. Haven't posted much but have done a lot of reading.
Here's a couple pictures of the cars he picked up for starters.

So this is the car we picked out to start on. It was the straightest out of the lot. And it already had the rear springs moved to the frame rails as a bonus.

Right out of the gate we knew that we wanted to change the front end to the pre 73. When he picked up the cars he got a hood with an Ill mounted six pack scope and a 70/71 tial section.

So last winter we pick up some of the other parts for the conversation.

We spent last winter focusing on the power train. Picked up three different 318s for a fistful of dollars. Till we found the "one".
Picture is of the first one we tore apart.

So the third engine we picked up was a keeper. 1987 roller 318 that an old lady had in her grocery getter.

After a complete tear down and inspection this thing was amazing. The perfect place to start to show the son how to build some old school power. And save a few bucks.

The lack of wear on this thing was crazy. After a little honing to clean up the walls for the new rings it was still .002 tight.

Awesome. I tried to get my son into it when I did my 2 darts but no luck. Good luck and keep it coming.

Good deal, it's nice to see the younger guys into these cars! He'll learn alot more than just how to turn wrenches before he's done! 65'

Cool to make a project with your son!

The short block got a hv oil pump, moly rings, new bearings, and gaskets. Topped it off with a double roller and a Voodoo Hydraulic Roller Tappet, Advertised Duration 264/270, Lift .485/.485.

Here is the part where we took care of the common problem with most 318s running stock bottom ends. Compression

The stock heads were the 302s. So we needed to increase flow and decrease head volume.
List of modifications to heads include.
Full port and polish
Bigger valves 1.8 in and 1.6 ex
Cut valve guides down to handle up to .525 lift
High quality valve job
And a good milling

This got us into to the 9.5 to 1 range.

Well done sir!!

But... you know in that pic he is wearing sandals. Im just glad they are the same OSHA approved ones i wear on my days off in the shop.
:)

I plan on taking the cheep way out when/if i have kids, just introduce them to drugs. Its gotta cost way less!

All jokimg aside, that must be a very good feeling. I know how important it is to my pops that we work together on cars.

Best of luck and keep us informed on the builds.

So we ran into a problem when we started checking valve to piston clearance. We had .032 on the intakes and .101 on the exhaust. To close on the intake and barely enough on the exhaust. The roller cam was ramping up the intake valve quicker than the piston could gain downward speed.

The list of fixes all included the loss of performance and we can't have that.

The fix was to fly cut the pistons for clearance. Witch I did in house.

That's so awesome he's taking an interest in it. He'll never forget the time spent with his Dad, which is infinitely more valuable than any high dollar car that can just be given to him. Great job!

The heads got a set of roller rockers. An air gap intake and ready to run dizzy to round out the top end.

The rear axle is a 63 b body with is the narrowest b body axle. The problem with that year is the axle nut drums. A quick call to Dr Diff and problem solved. Got everything we needed to convert to green bearings.
The rear has new shafts, 489 with 3.55s and SG, and 11 inch drums of a 73 new Yorker.

Hers a couple pictures of the engine and transmission sitting on the k frame and k frame stand. The k frame is a v8 spool mount k. Took the wire welder and grinder to the k and plated the bottom center seam. Also welded and smoothed all seams to reinforce the k. Not only does it look better but is stronger by a mile.

The best part about a k frame stand is it doesn't take much to turn it into a run stand. This video was shortly after breaking the engine in last summer. He was all smiles that day.

Nice K frame....:icon_fU:

So at this point in the project we finished stripping the car down to the shell. My son found him some sweet shades from back in the day in one of the vents.
