Finally getting to it!!! 1970 Duster 340

-
I hooked up the license plate light and bracket to the rear bumper. Got out my vintage 1970 PA license plate and installed it. I like the retro look.

The plate is a nice touch. Are you able to register the car with vintage plates in PA? In MA we can use a year of manufacture plate and sticker, of course they charge more for that privilege.

Steve, I think that you can use an original tag if you designate the car as a classic or antique. In either case, it does restrict the amount of miles that you can drive the car annually. I'll need to check with PennDOT.

Did some odds and ends on the car today. The oil pressure gauge was reading very low despite the fact that all was good during engine break-in. I had a spare oil pressure sending unit that I installed today. Everything was good after the new I installed the new one and got everything up to temp. I took care of a tranny fluid leak around the pan. Also took care of a fuel leak around the fuel pump. I still have a few odds and ends to take care of but things are looking good. I just need to get in touch with the guy who will install my windshield and back glass.

I was able to piece together everything that I needed for installing a Tuff wheel at a very reasonable price. I painted the adapter yesterday and installed everything this AM. I like how it looks. It ads a little more bling than the standard wheel.

 It looks awesome, and you have done such a nice job on the car. What range thermostat are you running? My Challenger Rallye Dash reads right about where yours does, and I'm running a 180 degree stat in the motor. It drives me nuts appearing on the gauge to run towards the hot side of normal, but I have checked the temp with a known good manual gauge.....and it runs dead on 180. I guess I just worry too much in my old age....lol.

Thanks JD. I'm running a 180 degree thermostat. I had my radiator redone with 3 cores and I'm running Evans antifreeze. I thought that the temp looked a little high but thought that me do to a fresh engine build. I'll need to get a thermometer and check out the temp. I was wondering about the temp but I wasn't as concerned as the lack of oil pressure on the oil pressure gauge.

I’m running a three core rad with Evans and a 180 degree thermostat as well Kevin and my temp creeps up into uncomfortable territory in slow traffic on a warm day. I picked up a 160 degree stat today and am probably going to give that a try, don’t know what else to do.

Thanks for the info Dan. Although that's not what I want to hear. Let us know how things go with the 160 degree stat.

Back in the 80’s I was having high temp issues and switched to dual electric fans with my original two core rad and I could sit in traffic all day on the hottest days with no problem, seems like we’re just not getting enough air thru the rad.

Glen Ray 3 core here, never gets above 180....

I made arrangements to have the windshield and back glass installed on the car the end of the month. I've been working on the stainless trim......sanding and buffing to get rid of 40 years of wear and tear.
An interesting note on the engine temperature. I had a spare NOS temp sending unit lying around. I switched out the one that was on the block and ran the car up to temp. A thermometer in the radiator confirmed fluid temp was 180 degrees. The temp gauge came down at least one notch to middle or slightly below midline.

I'm going to try and get my car ready for Carlisle. I would like to enter it as a featured vehicle. I hope that I can get all my ducks in a row before the show. Unfortunately, I haven't had as much free time to work on the car as I would like.

I know that feeling! Probably won't have anything this year again.

Sorry to hear that John. I know how frustrating that can be. Here's a pic of the temp gauge after full warm-up today.

Finally took care of the last electrical gremlin this weekend. I could not get my radio to play when I plugged it into the main harness. The radio worked when hooked up to a 12v source. It was not a ground issue. Rather than tearing the harness apart to find the problem, I made my own radio harness from a spare connector off of the original fuse box. I ran my radio wiring into the accessory slot on the new fuse box. I then spliced the orange radio wire into the orange wire on the instrument cluster. Radio now works and the light dims with the headlight switch.
I'm scheduled to have the windshield and back glass installed on Friday. I've been working on polishing the stainless trim. It's dirty, tedious work but things are coming along. So far, I haven't sent any trim flying across my shop.......thank God!.

I've been careful to call it quits when I start to get tired. It's easy to get complacent while buffing.....that's when things go airborne!

Finally installed my drip rail molding tonight. My originals got dinged up pretty good when I took them off. I thought that I was being very careful. Purchased new AMD molding and gave them a good buffing last night. Installation was certainly more time consuming than I had anticipated. The windshield installer is coming over tomorrow to install the lower windshield trim.
