I finally am feeling up to doing some work on my car, had it 2-1/2 months and have yet to do anything other than tune and time it, although the engine is coming out soon, so.....Oh, and I have been amassing parts since I got he car. Found a 8-3/4 rear sure grip and front disc assemblies here locally from a member of FABO, thanks Derrick....

Bought a new gas tank as the old one piddles very slowly, but also has a major dent in the bottom.

Today decided to get the rear end out so I can prep and then install the 8-3/4, and it's the first time I have had any of the tires off of the car, so some exploration was on the menu. I've included a couple of pics of the underside rear of the car...I think it's in pretty decent condition for it's age, what so younzes think????

Some more pics of the progress with the car, although, sometimes it doesn't feel like progress.

I haven't decided on color scheme, yet, but am leaning towards something in blue, and the underhood area WILL go body color. But have to decide on engine color. Car was originally a 273, which woulda been red, the engine is a 1970 340, which would be orange...so, dilemna to follow.

The motor in my 73 Dart Sport is a 72 Block, but I chose orange just for looks.Enough blue around.LOL!

I'm leaning towards engine being Mopar orange.

Now that the engine is out, the REAL work starts.

replacing the inner fenders(posted the pic from the wheel well to show the hack job someone did while installing fenderwell headers many moons ago), fabricating(cant find em anywhere) trunk extensions, floor pan patch, then bodywork. The car is real solid, but the paint on it is 50 footer paint. No hope for it, so I'm probably going to change the complete color, therefor I'll be facing a ton of work, there.

My goal on the road date is Father's Day 2011, there's a couple of pretty big shows/cruises then, soooooooo

Quick question:

I know how to post pics on here, but DO NOT know how to post pics and put captions by them to explain what they are, can someone enlighten me as to how to do this??

Thanks

FF

SOme pics of today's work, you can see the gaping hole left by an old fender well header install, too hacked to repair, then the opening left by the removal of the old innder fender, and the hacked up upper shock mount, followed by the shock mounts supplied to me by GTGrinly(thanks), and lastly the test fit on the inner fender that will be going in on the passenger side

Got to work on the passenger side upper shock mount repair, today. Measured, cut off bad portion, measured, made template, transferred template to donor shock mount, measured, cut donor shock mount, measured, aligned donor piece, clamped welded and finished, here's some pics of the work.

2.5 months, izzat all? I know someone who let a car sit in the garage for years before tackling it. Wouldn't want to spread names in public, but the event may end up in my autobiography... (ahem) ;)

Awesome condition for a Pennsylvania car. And nice work reconstructing the shock tower, by the way. Really glad you're going to paint the underhood body color, too.

I trust an upgrade from 9" drums is on your wish list? They work OK, will even bring the car down on a panic stop. Once. Wouldn't want to try it a second time. Your car is too nice to risk having marginal brakes, IMHO.

The car started life in North Carolina, then went to New Mexico in 1989, where it was never actually titled. I know this because the guy who sold it to me flat out lied and said he had a clear title, when in fact, he had a title that had been signed over 20 years ago, to someone else, and then the car was sold in New Mexico a couple of times, and he sent me the old North Carolina title, along with 2 or 3 "bills of sale" and expected me to be able to get a Pa. title with that paperwork. Luckily, I was able to trace back to the guy who's name was on the North Carolina title, and I found him, and he got me a NC duplicate, signed it over, and I now have the clear PA title. I was also able to get a good history of the car, at least up until 1989, from him, including the 340 instead of 273 reasoning, et al.

AS far as an upgrade from the drums, not on the wishlist, it's on the "to do" list. When I bought the 8-3/4 sure grip rear to replace the 7-1/4 that was in there, I also bought the front disc setup, including master cylinder, prop valve, and lines, from a 73 Dart sport, so, when I pull the k frame to clean it up and paint it, I'll make the switch when it goes back in.

Actually, I thought about going out to the garage today, work on smoothing a few things out and fitting the passenger side inner fender and getting it ready to weld in, but it's only going to be 32 here today, and my garage is detached, with no heat, so when it's 32 outside, the garage is about 25 inside, or so it seems, and I don't work well in those kind of temps. Have to clear up the basement "area" so I can push the car over into the house and get some work done on it this winter.

I have a goal of having this thing on the road, completed, for Father's Day of 2011. And seeing there is no real rust repair to do, I think that's a reasonable goal.

FF

That,s funny..push the car over into the house...If my car was in my house,I wouldn,t stop working on the little things til it was done.Hey,might even sleep in it?LOLYou doing a great job saving this car and doing it right!Did you mean Fathers Day 2010?You seem to be getting closer!:clock:

Nah, 2011 is the goal, the $$$ for the engine rebuild and the paint is the time stretching factor.

But, if things work out and it gets back on the road sometime in 2010, I won't complain. I just want to drive this car. Never put plates on it when I got it, just started work and planning. Already have the rear end changed, now little things. Have to fabricate trunk extensions, as I haven't been able to find them anywhere. The pass. side has some perforation, minor, so I may just have to make a patch. The driver's side, well, when whomever did the bodywork on an earlier restore did their thing, they didn't make or replace the trunk extension, they used spray foam insulation, and cut it in the shape, probably evident in one of the earlier pics in this thread, so I have to make one, or find one. that, and replace the other inner fender and upper shock mount, and remove the home made floor pans(pass. front and 2 small patches in the rear floor pans) and get replacements and put them in, then it's clean up, sand sand and sand, get the body right, paint, engine, and a complete interior, and I mean complete, this car has virtually no interior other than torn up seats, so i have to find door panels, head liner, sail panels, kick panels, carpet for all areas, seats/seat repairs, etc.

So, it's not like there's not much to do, but the first tie I drive this thing legally, oh boy, who needs Viagra.

A familiar issue. :) The warmest place I ever lived was northern Florida, and even there, winter temps in the 30s are common. Darn hard to work with no heat. But at least winter doesn't last long. Beats the heck out of New England.

I got spoiled with the summers, though. San Francisco feels like winter year-round, to me. And real estate is so much harder to come by... we're lucky to have a garage at all, and it's not really ideal for doing any work. If I put a compact car in there, space is so tight I have to choose my parking offset as to whether I'll be able to open the right door or the left. Seriously.

Wow, I'm still realizing how much that Florida dedicated 1.5 car garage spoiled me. ;) In the next few months as I settle into SF, I hope to find a small industrial workspace to rent. Anyone with ideas, please feel free to send me a PM.

- Erik

PS. Not that it was my intention to solicit, but it's on my mind: anyone looking to buy property in Jacksonville, please feel free to PM. Thanks.

Erik: Do you have to live in S.F.? I live on the other side of the bay. My wife takes BART as thousands do, gets to work in a little under an hour, saves wear on her car and her nerves. And homes on this side of the bay are probably 30-50% less than the price of a home in San Francisco. Here in Concord you can buy a decent starter home $350000 - 400000, probably over a half a mil in S.F. And we have two car garages! Consider the East Bay.

Erik: Do you have to live in S.F.? I live on the other side of the bay.

Yep, I rented a room in Oakland for a few months when I first landed here. You're absolutely right about real estate prices being cheaper... though even the East Bay is crazy compared to so many other places in the country. (A $400k "starter home"? Good grief, that oughtta buy a mansion.)

I don't expect to be in SF forever, but it'll do for the moment. Now that I'm here, I've found a very cute reason to stay, and she's more encouraging than anyone I've ever met. It's really helping both of us flourish in so many ways. I'll just enjoy whatever comes, since she has far more reasons to want to be in SF than I do.

Ya know what they say, hang onto a woman when she appreciates yer wheels... ;)
