Ford 272 C.I. runs low 11's. Why do Mopar guys need 408's?

To me most on here don’t generally want to run higher than 3.55 gears, why not build the displacement that makes the hp at the rpm where your gearing choice is optimal instead of some compromise.

You’re making my point for me.

Anyone without a dedicated drag car usually finds themselves building around longevity and not having to have the foot to the floor to make it happen all the time either hence the 4 in stroke small block.
Any tiny *** motor that's running that fast is not going to be very fun to drive around so again most of us want to drive to the track and drive home and need about half pedal to pass somebody and you ain't going to do it with a ******* sub 300 in motor. So running 11s or 12s or whatever the hell with some dinky piece of **** motor and a hollowed out car with zero comfort and all that other **** is no big wow.
Are we going to talk turbo 4 cylinders next too?

Again, you have to define fun. Driving around with a tractor engine is straight boring to me. Fun stuff starts at 6500.

Depends how much beer you drink while driving the tractor.lol
My grandpa passed in 2005. My grandma just passed this year. Well she was in the hospital I was helping take care of the place and Grandpa when he was alive used to ride around on the tractor and the riding mower all day long no joke that grass must have been a half inch long and that field must have been plowed about 10 times over.... so I got out the riding mower to cut her yard one more time cracked open some beers.... one of biggest smiles on my face I've ever had...just thinkin bout old grandpa and grandma

i'm betting a lot of guys would love that .204 / .214 cam in their 14" tire 3.23 geared 340 or 360 A body.
A blast to drive from idle to 4800 rpm!
...and i can hear all the murmurs!

So,if GTX John can run 10 seconds with a 318 in a 3400 pound station wagon, what are you big cube guys doing wrong? Given an unlimited valve train, intake manifold, and exhaust he is still running stock compression and cast iron heads.

I would never rag on a guy that wants to build a stout 273/ 318 for any reason. I just understand, and I'm sure the guy building the killer 318 does too, that there are easier/cheaper/better mopar ways to go fast.
ANYBODY building a Mopar knows there are cheaper ways to go fast.
Yes and the guys over in the poly 318 group that spend more $$ on their builds, and they have even cast an improved 4 bbl intake for it and it costs some $$$.... they can make so me very respectable street power and they do it because they want to.

yo
K/G. What do you think it cost to build that. It’s not a 6000 RPM tractor engine.

EDIT: McLeod clutch (probably a soft lock) and Racer Brown cam.
u can bet there isnt anything stock in that engine , with exception of the block. My dad had one , it sucked compared to the sbc of the time , 292 werent any better !!!

Chit, it'd be a tire melter!

Maybe not so much what the big cube guys are doin wrong, but more like what @GTX JOHN is doin right!

I've always wanted a badass torque monster poly in a truck. So when you raise the hood you hear all the "what's THAT?"

Yep. 99% of the guys here that race or build engines don't have to run under restrictive rules, nor do they have to be the fastest in their class.
John has been racing in stock and superstock for (what, John?) 40 years, in classes where if you aren't fast, you don't win. The science of building a competitive stocker engine far excedes the usual street/strip effort.

That’s for sure. On a street strip ride you can skip a bunch of things that a race car would normally employ like a real good and well scienced out camshaft, head work, exhaust & headers, chassis and suspension set up.

Also other nice things like the cars interior and stereo.

On a bracket car, 500 dollar motor is all that's needed. 300 dollars for the good running magnum and slap a chinese air gap on it and your done. Sportsman class, cut down the tree and run the number. Never break, win rounds. :)

You guys kill me. A 500 something dyno stroker engine that cost more than you and I could ever afford. Great freaking job. Lmao.
Not saying to build it, I found it interesting, and thought the guys talking about polys would to.
Yes makes more sense to build 340/360 408/416 400/440 470/543 and people should but it a boring read most of the time. It's like nitrous dyno pulls add 100 hp nos shot and get a 100 hp more power big surprise.

In the late 70's there was a guy at Spokane running his Caddy with the A/C on clipping off wins.
Several times he made it deep in rounds at the World Finals with his slow consistent ride. lol
He also ran a 8 sec altered.

yes. For a true bracket racer, a gutted car with 4.56 gears, 3500 stall, and a 500 dollar motor is all that's needed. You can easily run 12's, be consistent, and never break parts. And if the motor has an issue, by another 200 dollar FBmarketplace magnum, throw the intake/carb/oil pan on it and keep truck'n.
