I Think I Don't Want These Computers in Cars Anymore

-
"WE" got a new vehicle that "WE" both can drive but mostly mine. Routine to go: unlock door, open door, hit unlock button to open rear door and put cooler and box on back seat. Get in, close door, hit lock button. Seat belt on, key in ignition and start. Press "auto start shut-off" ( so it stays running when you stop ), push button to release parking brake-make sure foot is on brake pedal, turn knob to "D", rotate knob twice to turn lights off during day, press last button below screen to turn all the stuff of and just leave the clock on. I think that's it...unless you want to pick a "mode" other than normal to drive in or turn off traction control.
Damn! What happened to turn key, put in drive? I live in the sticks, so I rarely lock any vehicles.

IMO "turn of the century" was the "just right" amount of tech in cars.

My 2000 Dakota R/T is probably the newest vehicle I can still work on.

...and it's not terribly difficult.
that's were i'm at man. my 2002 taco will likely be the last "new" truck i ever buy-- and even this one i bought used!

from a complexity standpoint it's pretty simple PS/PB/AC/AT 4 banger so there's nothing on it that i can't fix. but it's pretty much a stripper with crank windows and zero other options. i miss some of the stuff from my 05 ram (power windows/locks, heated mirrors, satellite radio, towing capacity, killer interior, meat locker level AC and gobs of power) but i wouldn't trade up for any of that at this point.

Remember that Ferd of mine that was having transmission issues? I'm at this point of the diagnostic problem finding now, lol. Good news is the cluster which also has a module that signals the PCM may be ok. So might just bypass some of the ferd bs lol.

Bad news is a wiper linkage bushing broke on the Dart. :(

1 bad ground strap can wreak havoc on these modern vehicles, some making you think your transmission just went out and put you in limp mode. Ok on country roads but extremely dangerous on interstate highways. Yeah, we all know that, carry on.

We had the original battery in the 2012 Charger me and my ex had. What a pain in the *** with all kinds of options not working. New battery and food as new. That said, I don't use auto start, she relied on it.

Geez, I unlock the door with the key, slide my *** into the seat, stick the key in the ignition and give it a twist, put on the seat belt, put it in gear and go. No need for all the other stuff.

94 still isn't bad for computers in cars, that is still the EEC-4 and it's a very primitive computer compared to what they use now.

In 94 the speedometer might be less dependant on a computer than you might think. It's usually a little gear that goes on the end of a speed sensor. It's mostly mechanical.

I just went through this with a 91 ford pickup and it was the gear was warped from heat.

Could be a 15 dollar fix for you like it was for me.

My 91 Escort has this type of speedo drive, and at one point the gear had removed itself from the shaft (the retainer came off) and after limping home I had to pull and split the trans (5 speed) in order to retrieve the gear! When the gear was off bouncing around in the gears shifting became difficult if not impossible, so was lucky to make it home that day!

2019 ram 1500. Brand new and very expensive. sound deadening system would cause loud echoes in the cab for no reason, no sound system on. Pull over to side of road, shut everything off and restart, then problem gone, for a while. Warning message while driving...xxxx system failure, go to repair facility as soon as possible...add to that incessant recalls for reflashing. I sold the truck with less than 5000 miles on it, lost confidence in the whole system, I will never buy a newer car again that has too much integrated high tech.

That is a bad word. Ours went up $900 this year. Good by State Farm...
Most people are good drivers and don't have accidents. But the few that suck drive insurance costs up.....so they say. But isn't it funny how us good drivers don't affect insurance rates at all?

That generation of escort is a good car. I bet someone didn't put the clip on correctly.

to many distractions in the new electronic carsi hate them if i could drive my Dart every day i would has a better ride and is comfortable . my ew car connot open the rear hatch unless shut off , do they think i'm going to open it as a spoiler at 90 mph ? i hate new cars

Good news and more good news!
The Ford Bronco is running and smoothly shifting gears again without issues. I pretty much just bypassed the ABS module and simplified the circuit. Ford had the wires/circuit going through the firewall 3 F**KING TIMES for some stupid reason, now it's just once.

The more good news, autozone had the wiper bushings in stock. So after I get fixing that the old dodge dart can be driven if it ever rains again.

Driving home in my 94 Ford and noticed that my speedometer stopped working. Then also noticed the transmission not wanting to down shift at speed. Yup, both are related and it's probably a bad sensor or wire and the TCM has no idea what to do. Made it home in 2nd gear and now I need to go to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription. Guess what car I'm using now? Yup! An A body Mopar, just a good old 73 Dart with 1973 tech. No computers to tell my transmission what to do.

I'm starting to just want simplicity and mechanically easy to fix cars now. I'll even take Bosch K-jetronic mechanical injection again. Thank god for my wonderful working 73 Dart and it's slow 225 slant 6. Moving backwards now seems like moving forwards.

The only **** that runs on electrons I appretiate anymore is the house lights, the refrigerator, the stove, and furnace fan.

We would have never seen a 9 second Dodge Challenger Demon without computer controls.
I would have never reached 405,000 miles on the original engine in any old Dodge truck without EFI, but this one still runs like new:

While I'm not fond of the nanny state junk nor the mysterious functions of the electronics, the stuff I've owned had been reliable.
I don't know what 65 feet has to do with anything though.
tell me the story of your pu w/400K......eng/trans/what type of service/ whats been fixed? Thanks, George in NC

IN short.....

Ram Jam 2.JPG

2007 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. I'm just over 405,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. The axle is original but I changed from 3.55 gears to a 3.92. The limited slip differential is stock.
I've replaced the radiator twice, the A/C condenser twice, One EGR valve, water pump, starter, 1 set of fuel injectors, 2 oxygen sensors, 1 fan clutch, 1 serpentine belt, multiple sets of spark plugs, ONE K & N air filter, 2 transmission control modules. Multiple sets of tires and brake pads. I've replaced a drivers side seat, console lid and cup holder. The Flowmaster muffler has 435,000 miles on it. I had it on my last truck that was totaled and it has been on this since I bought the truck in 2007.
The engine has used oil since around 200,000 miles but now that I'm retired and not driving 1000 miles a week, it isn't much of a problem.
I have a spare 5.7 to swap in, I bought it April of last year but this one just keeps running. It idles smooth and still makes decent power. Mileage isn't much different from when it was new, I can get 18-20 if I drive at 60 mph on flat ground.

Several years ago, my 2005 GMC truck would be going down the road and just shut off like you killed the ignition with no codes. It usually would then be able to be restarted immediately. It gradually started happening more frequently as I checked fuel pump pressure, etc. It would always start normally when cold and then start acting up as it warmed up. I chased that problem for 2 months with the truck eventually becoming undriveable, including taking it to the sharpest GM mechanic in the area. Of course, the two days he had it, it ran flawlessly and then quit on me on the way home from picking it back up. He basically told me that I was capable of the same diagnostic steps as him and it would be a waste of my money to continue to have him troubleshoot. He did loan me a set of 4 known good coil packs to swap out each bank individually. The coils made no difference so he told me to start tracing wiring harnesses to look for any cuts or chafing. It ended up being a piddly little ground wire that ran from the PCM to the drivers side of the engine block. The wire was still connected by only 1 or 2 strands of the wire. Crimped on a 10 cent wire terminal and truck ran good as new. Apparently, when the PCM loses power due to a bad ground, that doesn't generate a trouble code. The good news is that was probably seven years ago and the old girl has ran flawlessly ever since. I do have to admit, the 6.0 gas motor's power and torque are on another planet compared to my son's 2000 Ram 5.9 and gets the same pathetic gas mileage. If I was a GM guy, I'd grab a junkyard LS, throw it in whatever vehicle I could find, and drive the wheels off of it.

If not rusted all to hell, that`s a keeper.
My 09 5.3 has been very good to me, but I think I`ll be looking at front hub bearings in the future. A little over 160 K mi.
Only thing I`ve done is recently a set of plugs, oil changes, tires and a battery or two.
Knock on wood... you hear me automotive gods? I said KNOCK ON WOOD! LOL.

Rockers are gone and the rear wheel openings are starting to show above the factory flares but it doesn't really bother me. It's still solid as can be underneath and Illinois winters eat anything nice after several years anyway. I bought it in 2011 for $6300 with 104000 miles on it as I wanted an HD to tow our camping trailer. It's bright orange and the body was pretty beat on when I got it as it was an asphalt company's truck. Guy I bought it from said the orange turned everybody off so I got a steal. It's coming up on 190000 now and I really need to go through the front-end but that truck owes me nothing and it's really good at being a truck.

Come to the north east and that truck like a truck. Truck use here is over abusive.

Care to explain what this means? It makes no sense to me. Read it slowly. There is something missing.
