''I'm going to fix it up someday'' The resurrection of a '74 Dart Sport......

-
Thanks, Cliff.
Are you interested on the length of the axles themselves or the housing with axles?

If my axles are the same size I have no use for them and will be happy to send them to you if they are the same size

Front suspension and brakes are next.
I welded the z bar pivot bracket to the frame at this time too.
Some new undercoating cleaned up the look of the frame and inner fenders after a good cleaning, there was no rust to speak of so on it went.
Some of my pictures didn't turn out, i'll have to post them later when i retake them.

Windshield installed after cleaning and pre painting the gutters. The Windshield out of the red parts car was cleaned up and used since it was almost new, cut the rubber on the red car and pushed out the old windshield on the green car and cleaned up and just reused it because it was still good and pliable......

Thanks.
We did a lot of work to it in quite a short period of time.
It may not be perfect, but it will be safe and reliable.

Loving the build! I couldn't believe those lousy factory welds on the K frame! You did a great job re-doing them. Excellent job so far. Keep the pics coming!

Thanks for the compliments!
There's still lots of pics to come, it takes a lot of time to resize them and organize, so please bear with me.........

Nice job on everything! Love these budget builds sourcing good used stuff off other cars. Should be a nice, fun daily driver.

As for those crappy welds, quality control in the assembly plants back in the 70s was really poor. I bought a new Dodge van in 74 and assembly-wise it was a major piece of ****. I had it for a week and then took it back to the dealer with a list of about a dozen major and minor problems, things like the steering developing a half-turn of play after only 150 miles. My wife bought a new Firebird in 79 and it was almost as bad.

Things are a lot better now. I bought a Dakota new in 2000, still have it with 207K mostly trouble-free miles on it, hope to drive it for a long time yet.

Gary

Looking really good. Your making me look bad since I didn't get to do anything this year thanks to body shop

Thanks again everyone for the compliments.
I can't take credit for all of the work, i had a lot of help from R.J. and George (gdrill).
There's not a big trick to it at all, just a lot of cleaning, some patience, time, and some paint. Having some friends to help you goes a long way here.......
We kinda help each other on their projects and parts, and everything works out.
We all have our projects, and we all decided it's time to put a few together with what resources we have. There's not a lot of big bucks involved here, mostly work and time.

Did you get kicked out of the house :D I am looking for a cot where you take
a nap in :D:D Welds look perfect  and look at you go on the engine 8-)

Have a relaxing evening and rest well tonight :glasses7:

Looks like your doing a great job bringing the old girl back to life.

I don't know about the air scoop on the roof though. :)

No, i didn't get kicked out of the house, Mike!
Actually, i spent a lot of time after work in the middle of the night and up early on the weekends. A weeks holidays helped a lot too. :glasses7:
To where i'm at now took about 5 weeks.

Thanks Stan, i thought that the scoop would be a cheap way to add air conditioning. :glasses7:
But through some searches on FABO and some pics of member's cars, i now realize that i can just roll down the windows so i'll use the scoop on the hood instead.

Trunk floor time!
The original was rusty where the mounting bracket for the gas tank was, as well as the drain hole in the back was rotted out, so i salvaged a replacement out of one of my parts cars which was a rolled 'green 73 Dart Sport. When i cleaned it up, i found a couple of pin holes in the side under the factory undercoating that needed some repair as well as 4 holes drilled in the bottom that i filled.
I welded it in, ground down the welds, buffed out the surface rust and flakes of old surface rust and the factory paint which was rubbery and peeled off, (like seam sealer) and brushed on some Tremclad on the floors. When that dried, i painted it with some duplicolor KG8 green to match the exterior of the car. It has a textured look kinda like the original finish on the trunk floor.
From looking at the pictures, it looks like it's welded in crooked, but it's not.
I made several measurements of where the factory placement was, even the factory stamping wrinkles are in the same place....... so it must be an optical illusion, or maybe an optical confusion. Tropical delusion?
Whatever it is, the gas tank straps went on straight with the same amount of threads showing on both sides when installed and tightened up so it's good enough for me!

Next was the installation of the new gas tank and 3/8'' sending unit.
The gas tank was a new Spectra unit, very nice and made in Canada! The kicker is, i ordered it online from the U.S.A. because it was cheaper than i could buy it in Canada. :wack:
The tank was installed with a new filler grommet and i just reused a good old top pad. In went the sending unit and it was installed in the car with cleaned up and painted straps and j bolts. What an easy installation it was!
I was going to use the curved filler tube out of a fold down seat car that was in the hang 10 parts car, but it was bent somehow and the gas cap didn't fit well. So i used the filler tube, gas cap, and rubber floor seal from the red '75 parts car as it was in great shape. The filler tube is installed from outside of the quarter panel and is installed after the gas tank is in on '75s which makes it easier.
Some new gas line hoses and with the ground strap cleaned up, it was a sweatless installation overall.
I definitely wouldn't fart around wit an old tank again unless it was perfect inside and out!
It cost me under $240.00 for everything after shipping etc.
I will have to take some more pictures and add them later, the ones of it installed didn't turn out.

I have read the hole thread and I really enjoy the work you have done and the result you have acchieved. I really like the 4-speéd. That is sooo cool!

Good luck with the project. I will follow it.

Thanks, it's been a lot of work, but a lot of fun at the same time!

I decided to use an 8 1/4'' rear end for now that i got from a member here. It came from a '75 Valiant 4 door slant 6 car he parted out a couple of years back. It just happens to be a 2:71 sure grip!
The gears are too low for what i want, but it will get the car moving until i can do up a B body 8 3/4 for it......
Oh, BTW, a 255-70-15 on a 15 by 6 1/2'' rallye wheel is too big for a A body 8 1/4, the tire actually hits the springs when let down and some weight put on it!
