Change jar is a great idea. I have a gallon size change jar. just cashed it in a month ago and had almost $500. Well thats what I used to get me my front end rebuilt and had some left over to get me some used cop wheels, they will be here next week. Hang in there, time will change
 
I would add up the cost of all of the parts it needs ,if it comes out to $3000 or over i would then hunt down a new car that is in good shape. I found my 68 valiant in great shape ,no rust slant 6 for 1200.00 six months ago they are out there you just have to search craigslist often.

Well, thats how i found alot of my cars :-D!!
I think i will start a change jar... I have a change container (old baby wipe box) but it's a hassle to open it so i never put change in it. Time to upgrade i think!

I scored $50 bucks today for getting my parents ol' v-dub sold.. I can now do my front brakes!! I actually had the pads (wagners) in stock for only $14 and i can cut the rotors for free at work... I'm SOOO glad i work where i work it's saved me so much money!

Things are looking up after all :-D!!!
 
It gets better bird. You're doing the right thing. Sorry to hear about your health and I apologize if my first response started rough but that's how I get through life. I have to pull up my dumb *** by the boot straps. I have a picture of my grandmother and grandfather taken at their wedding in a freaking stone ridden 180 acre farm plot in northern wisconsin. This was 1907.

When I feel like life is kickin' my *** I just look at that picture and realize how lucky I am.

BTW, I found my duster on craigslist too!

So you live in denver huh?!?

I've been thinking about moving up there...
I moved out there before but it only lasted about 2 weeks, lol!!
Maybe this time will be a little longer :-D!

I have followed this thread and noticed that all the responses are valid and caring. Bunch of good guys here, many of whom have had very difficult times. Do your health problems prevent you from working? Do they prevent you from getting a better paying job? Improve your situation?

Sometimes you just have to grab your self by the collar and slap the **** out of yourself. The simplest expenses add up over time.

I used to buy lunch at a deli. That ended when I needed money. I just made my own at home and "brown-bagged it." Buying alcohol and/or other mind-altering substances is a huge expense. Forget about it. Same with going out to dinner. There will be plenty of time for this stuff after you have made your situation more stable.

Priorities! When I was working a full-time job and going to school full-time, I made sure that I did not have a girlfriend full-time. That is a big expense! That is not to say that I did not enjoy the company of the opposite sex, it is simply that I set economic priorities.

Good luck to you. Please follow the advise that you have seen here in this thread. There is nothing I hate doing more than re-inventing the wheel. Too painful...
 
ok then... whats the rush to have it done ?? If its a daily driver then get the safety items done as you can. I took 19 years to get my car done and it was a love hate relationship the whole time. The car spent alot of idle time just sitting in storage. This car was my first car and I had a dream of what it would look like. Now after all these years I can open my shop door and see it all done (moslty) sitting there. Its a nice feeling to know I didnt give up on it. That being said in case a higher priority comes up the car will be up for sale real fast. So do what you can and take time. When the car becomes a frustration its time to reorganize your thoughts and wait until it becomes a item you want again.

Remember there are TONS of little simple stuff you can do in the meantime that are just labor intensive and little amounts of $ but make the car look better. Start cleaning and painting suspensions, brake drums, inside the trunk. etc...little things make a big diff and most are inexpensive.

You take care of yourself first and you can save a lot of money working on your own car. I couldn't afford to buy transmissions for my first car so I learned to rebuild them. No money for someone to build my engines so I learned more. Your young and have a good head so those are the two things big in your favor. It all depends on what you want to do with it. You can do it if you take one step at a time.
Years ago I knew a guy that got married too young and barely making ends meet. He found a car that looked like crap but had a really solid motor/trans/rear. That was to get him to work and store. Didn't have the money to paint it so he bought some oil base house paint and painted it with a brush. Looked like crap but better than before. Two months later he bought sandpaper and started sanding all the brush marks out of the paint. Finally used rubbing compound and polishing compound and the car looked really good except for a couple of spots. He use his head and little money to keep his wife happy and the neighbors didn't miss the eyesore. He bought the old 4 door Ford cheap because it wasn't sexy, just to drive and it served him well.
BTW- It wasn't me. I would have tried spray cans in his position. I don't recomend what he did. He must have sand and polished that car for months.

The key is to get a job before moving. I came out here on vacation and liked it so much I wrote a resume', brought it to a kinkos and had 20 copies made. Spent 3 days of vaca handing them out at motorcycle shops. I got a call 30 days later. Made arrangements and lo and behold here I am 14 years later.:cheers:

You can do it if you put your mind to it. Just remember that wherever you go, there you are. Move for the right reasons. 8)

My G/F and i broke up and im going to have to move out and get my own place cause i told her she could have this place and now i'll never have the money to fix her or drive her because of the cost of moving and what not, and i also need a reliable car now......... :angry7:

Sorry everybody but it looks like you'll not be seeing me around here for a WHILE, untill i buy another a-body at least (which i will)!!!!

I still have my 66' D-100 1/2 ton short bed though and i'll never part with her; mainly cause i have a place to keep her :-D....

One thing you gotta tell yourself is that these cars are replaceable hunks of metal.
Priorities come first and life is more important than a pretty painted piece of metal.
There is always something to fix on these cars so don't feel bad.

I attempted the same thing when I first got married and realized quickly I had to put my 74 valiant up for sale becasue I just could not afford to fix it up so I had to wait 20 years before I could get another project.

This project took 8 years to get it to the point it it is now.

It runs and drives but I gotta pull the "professionally built motor with no guarantee" out and fix a leaking rear main seal, and my transmission is still leaking.

Nothing ever goes smooth, that's life, get used to it.

I love my cuda but I would sell it in a heartbeat for the right price just if it meant keeping my Wife happy and my family secure.

Just like a new bike, the exitement wears off after reality sets in.

Man if it was raining vaginas you,d get hit with a *****. lol Its got to get better it cant get worse. where are you at? If we can get Memike a car maybe we can finagle a 7.25 rear end. i got one in tx.
 
i found a 8 1/4 rear at a scrap yard in a 73 swinger with traction bars, lowering blocks, air shock's, the whole sha-bang for $260 out the door but i dont know if i have to mod. anything like the driveshaft....
 
it cant be all that bad. if you cant afford to fix it all just sell it and be up front about it. or get a parts car and swap all the parts to your car or vice versa. classic cars are big money pits and if you dont have the coin you best sell it. imo
 
Hey man, I feel ya. I have to pull the 318 in my Duster to repair bent valves from a jumped timing chain (and add some goodies). I don't even know when I'll be able to do it due to the fact that schoolwork is a B!TCH right now, I don't really have anyone who knows Mopars to help me out, and I am severely lacking in the tool department. Compounded with the fact that the only other car my family has is our '03 Chrysler minivan, let's just say I don't get a "warm fuzzy" when I think about my current automobile situation.
