I've been a 3+ pack a day smoker for 35+ years. Haven't had a smoke for 45 hours.

For the last 6 years or so I've been rolling my own with pipe tobacco. Cost is about $1.20 a pack, as they don't tax pipe or cigar tobacco like they do cig tobacco.. congressmen want their cigars and pipes cheap. So, about $3.00 a day.. it's still $90 a month though.
I started when I was like 15 or 16 , I am now 53. Dec 22 2016, I was at work getting short of breath for no reason. afternoon break came and I took that pack of cigarettes , stuck them in a vise, and proceeded to compact them into " ultra thin 100's" . I made up my mind that I was DONE. I went to my doctor and found that I had GERDS, and after a bunch of tests, my lungs and heart are still good after a pack and a half a day for 30 years. I was also prescribed 25 mg of zoloft to take the edge off my anxiety from quitting cold turkey. the first 2 weeks were a little rough, but now I don't even think about it. I can stand right next to an ashtray with a burning cigarette and it doesn't bother me one iota. in fact , it kind of grosses me out. YOU HAVE TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND TO JUST BE DONE LOL

I'm stronger than those ******* things... I hope.

You ARE stronger than those damn things!. I quit July 1 1996. I have asthma and was smoking up to 2 or more (especially when drinking) packs a day. I had bought my first house and was determined that nobody would smoke in the house. My wife at the time also smoked, she would have at least 2 or 3 before she got out of bed in the morning, agreed that she was ready to quit too. She had tried many times before but always started again. I had quit a few times before for anywhere from a month to 6 or 7 months, but that time was it. Wife went on the patch for several months, I used it for 3 or 4 days and I was done. Haven't smoked anything for almost 24 years now.
You can do it, it won't be easy, and some days you'll really feel like ****, but in the end it's more than worth it. Don't give up.

When the craving hits, take some deep breaths, it will pass...maybe get another one in a minute, just keep doing it. It also made me aware of my lungs and wanting them to be healthy. Kudos to you!

Proud of you! It’s not easy. I’ve quit many times only to start up again. But, I haven’t had a smoke in 12 years or so now.

i tried quitting at least 50 times before i quit 6 years ago my will power was weak , then i had some health problems , that dummied me up real quick . coyote jack quit cold turkey the same day i did , i used him for inspiration .

I want to thank you all for the replies. I haven't done a damn thing on my car..working 14 hour days from home, and trying to keep a 17 yr. old senior happy has kept me busy. Planned on having my car rollin by now.. now just trying to keep the peace.

Thanks again to you all.

YOU CAN DOOO IT !!!! YOU CAN DOOO IT !!!!
Then before you know it, you will have done it.
Just remember it's your mind that needs to take control and keep control.

Jesus man rolling pipe tobacco?!?!? That's like the "mainlining" of smoking.
I would be remiss if I didnt mention that Lori had quit altogether after 35 years. Nothing but air goes into her lungs! Smoke free for over 6 years. We did Champix(very similar to US Chantix) and although it works it MESSES with your mind.
I saw Collective Soul at a small venue, great show!

My stepfather smoked for 20 yrs (unfiltered Lucky Strikes). He was in the hospital for “jaundice,” and the doctor told him the news that it had just been determined smoking would cause cancer. He threw an almost full carton in the trash. On his way home, he bought two “store boxes” of Dentyme gum (he hated it). Whenever he craved a cigarette, he would take a Dentyne instead. He never smoked again and never bought any more Dentyne.

I quit drinking carbonated drinks cold turkey one day. Was drinking a big gulp (or 2) of Diet Coke a day plus whatever I had for dinner and lunch, refills, etc. I thought it was the toughest thing I could try as I interacted with it daily at least 5 time. Just to prove that I could be stronger than a habit. Been 3 years and going, have not missed it~ Oh, Beer is exempt, but I drink maybe 2 a month. Wife quite smoking with no aids, when we planned to get pregnant. Now Nate is 18! Your mind is stronger than any will you train it to have. Stay strong!

I smoked for about 25 years, I then started using one of those vape things trying to quit smoking. Well the vape only cost me like 5 bucks a week to use. Well, i found my 18 year old son using one and that didnt sit well with me so, we made a deal and we quit using those together. It's been a few months now and it was easier to quit using the vape then it was to quit smoking cigarettes. Keep it up!!!

True story. When I was a kid my dad would send me next door to the Sunoco station to buy him a pack of cigarettes out of the machine. I remover when they were 15cents. Then 20cents then a quarter. My dad said the day a quarter won’t buy a pack aid cigarettes he would quit. Well time came they went to 30 cents. He said that it I quit! He never picked one up again!

And trying to quit for good.

Hardest thing I've ever done.

Hour at a time. Every hour is a win.

I can't really tell the kid to make sacrifices with his life without making my own that he can relate to, so here I am.

Drinking beer is another thing.. but crap, I need something, lol.
Good work man it is hard. Iv been there. I don't share this often but I am (was) an alcoholic. I dont mean drink a beer or two I mean 12+ everyday. It got to the point where it consumed me that is all I wanted to do. I lost interest in literally everything else. I went thru a very dark place and a very hard time but one day I said enough is enough I want my life back and checked myself in. I did all the steps rehab, AA all that good stuff. I was 30 years old and had not went a day since I was probably around 18 or so without a drink of something. The first 48 hours was the hardest. It was miserable I layed in a bed sweating and freezing at the same time I thought I was dying. I'm proud to say this December will be 5 years sober. I havent so much as smelled alcohol. It hasn't been easy and there are times I'm tempted but I always so no I'm not going back down that road. Keep at it man and feel free to contact me if you need any support. Oh and btw I quit smoking , dipping, and drinking all at the same time. You can do it!!

Put $25 in your piggy bank every smoke freeday from now on, as that's the price of 3 packs of coffin nails here in CA. You'll be rich in no time, and may live to spend it! (We know you will)

Congratulations, very hard thing to do, problem is you’ve got to relearn everything you do and do it without smoking, keep going, you’re really over the hard bit, 2 full days is great going!
The hours will turn into days, the days will become months and before you know it, years. How do I know, well I went through the same thing once and now it’s 28 years since I stopped!

Being a non smoker I could never see the reason people like going it so much. It’s expensive, stinks, and can kill you. That being said the good thing is it appears you can repair the damage if you quit so that’s great news. I know my 68 year old sister quit years ago and walks two plus miles a day and before this Coronavirus bullcrap was going to the gym five days a week. Goodluck and congratulations.

Good on ya! Keep it going.
I quit in Iraq ****, 16 years ago. For me I had to replace the mechanical movement/oral fixation. Oddly enough, sunflower seeds seem to help with that.
Congrats! Think of all the car parts you can buy with that dinero!

I’m a non smoker and I have always heard quitting smoking is the hardest thing...or is it quitting MoPars?? LOL....

You can do this...stay tough and beat those cravings! I had a friend who quit and he said he could actually taste food again and didn’t have to use as much ketchup or salt to add flavor! He asked me one time “did really smell like smoke that bad?” I said yes, he felt bad and apologized, he said he didn’t even notice it.

I also have an aunt that has probably smoked for close to 45 years and she quit cold turkey all on her own and is doing awesome, think she’s going on 2 years now. But good for you and for your health! If your wife quits too then it’s even better and will be easier if you do it together....good luck!

I think some kind of a reward would be good...start small....go a day, do something you enjoy, or go a week...a month.....save the money you would normally spend, and treat yourself...I like to have a blizzard from the DQ as a treat. Also if you happen to have a cig, don’t be super hard on yourself, it will or might happen, it will just make you try harder next time you have a craving and you can be on track again!
