Lay down Sally...

America! Kokomo Indiana transmission plant celebrating 60 years. My grandfather built transmissions for 37 years here. He is one reason why I love cars as much as I do. Can't help but think hes here with me today.

Then tonight. I start a huge part of the build. Well drinking my morning coffee I was searching the Craigslist ads when I spotted a 360 magnum marked at $150. I said what the heck and texted him. Long story short. Borrowed my dads truck and went to the guys house. His lift broke, so he had a few buddys come over and we lifted it into the back of the truck. Got it bought for $100 all said and done. Minus the valve covers and intake.

Thanks, it has been really enjoyable!

Saving this for later. http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=294708

And

This
http://www.magnumswap.com/

So looking at this swap.
I have two 600 cfm carbs to swap on

Gotta pick up an intake or have my Eddy refilled.

I have been reading up on cams. I have a comp flat tappet cam that is brand new in the box, came with the car. I'm interested in that because it will work with the mechanical fuel pump. I have heard bad things about the snout extension for the roller cams. Anyone have experience with this?

I am planning on keeping the stock heads as they are pretty nice. Swap out for newv alve springs and maybe new rockers.

For the bottom end. I want to keep it mostly stock. New bearings and seals. The engine only has 88,000 miles on and the bore looks good. I don't think it will need to punched out. Maybe worth a little taller piston? Try to get the compression up?

New oil pan and sending unit.

Some TTI headers for some good noise

I planed on using an LA water pump and accessories.

The 318 in the car already has a mini starter.

Basically going for a little hotter mild build, get it on pump gas and streetablr but I would like it to boogie.

Any suggestions would GREATLY be appreciated.

Also

My car buddy, he's a huge GM guy. While helping him clean his shop out, we found a 700R4 tranny he bought for a long gone project. Said he would part with it real cheap for all the help. Is this something worth swaping? It is a Md8 hydramatic 700r4 with electronic control. I've read a few things that sound really good about them but I'm unsure. Any info would be great.

So small update.

First photo is from a birthday party, a women I work with was having a birthday party for her son, who loves cars and classic car to boot! He was so excited, even showed me his photo collection. I guess they are always taking pictures of cars for him.

Second one is just a cool shot. Cause I like photos.

Third is getting the block out of the truck, pays to live on a farm.

And now on the atand, home for a little while.

Started tear down on the block. Got the drivers side tore down. Looks pretty good I'd say. Guy said it had 88,000 miles on it but he also said it was 98 block but the date code is a 02. Everything looks pretty clean. Tomorrow night the passenger side comes off.

Cheers:burnout:

I would keep going with the tear down, take everything apart have the block dipped at the machine shop, new cam bearings and freeze plugs installed.

As for compression, I would re-use the stock pistons, I put KB 107's in mine and the compression is pretty high at 11.37

I was planning on having it did, can't hurt to have them do the bearings and plugs there. I was going to have them check the heads as well, if they are worth keeping then maybe an angle job. The block itself it pretty clean surprisingly.

That's pretty high compression, I was really hoping to stay under or be right at 10. Honestly this is the furthest I've ever been into an engine. So I'm trying to play it smart

That is why I suggested re-using the stock pistons.

Some more pictures from the break down. All looks pretty good.

You guys think the mains look okay? I was really hoping I wouldn't have to buy a crank.

Your crank looked like mine.
Machine shop will turn it down, no big deal.
Mine ended up with .010" rods and mains.

No problem, in fact every Mag and La I every rebuilt required turning, if you don't oil pressure will be low.
My guess is as motor get older, people neglect them, not as frequent oil changes, or run them low on oil.

If it makes you feel any better the crank in my 48 Willy's is .040/.040 rods and mains.
No more turning on it, and you cannot buy one.

Dang, so what are you going to do then? You have freaking 48?! I need to step up my game.

Been driving it for about 5 years now since doing a total frame off, the 48 was a $200 basket case.
I do have a few jeeps.
