Low buck 360 build

Cam card calls out a 106 ICL. Considering the OEM style timing chain I'm using, 2 deg off isn't so bad.

It wouldn't surprise me if that was right. Poor Crane. I sure wish someone would resurrect them. ...and do it right this time.

Minor update. Inspected the new oil pump and found a bit of rust on the flange. Luckily nothing on the pump internals. Scrubbed the flange and gave it a squirt of assembly lube then back together.

Mostly installed the timing chain cover and water pump. I say mostly because I need to order some fasteners for this. I just have a few in here but this will allow me to cleanly install the oil pan.

The gas tank and radiator below hint at what I'm thinking as far as a run stand conversion for the engine stand.

Kinda slow going the last few days. Customer paying projects in the way. Worked on the valve train a bit.

All the rockers except one looked in decent shape. One was showing some signs of cracking so I had to rob one off another engine.

Did a bit of mild polishing on the rocker shafts (just to diminish some minor grooving) and installed the parts. Of course I put plenty of cam break in goop on the lifter faces before dropping in. Cam was already coated when it got stabbed in.

I just now noticed you're in Georgia. Wherebouts?

Playing around with the intake this morning. Goal was to block off the exhaust crossover on the smog era manifold. Whipped up some Marine Tex gray epoxy (which is super badass stuff BTW) and trimmed out the gasket openings from some thin sheet metal. I used thin metal to make sure it doesn't interfere with gasket sealing on the intake manifold.

I also went ahead and did the same thing to the cover plate. I ground off the vacuum control gizmo and sealed it up. I don't think the pieces on the intake will leak but I figured it doesn't hurt to have this anyway.

A bit of aluminum HVAC tape to hold the pieces in place while the epoxy dries.

A few updates.

Got the heat riser blocks done. Will cut out this section in the intake gasket and silicone the openings in the heads. If it ever is a problem then I'll just change to an aluminum intake. This is a very thin block off, thinner than gasket thickness so it's not going to cause issues with vacuum leaks.

Oil pan gasket installed. Used a magnum one piece. Used silicone in groove of rear main seal, and in the corners where you'd typically use it. Also had to add plenty on the pan to fill the front seal retainer section in the pan. This is well documented on the site. You need to be careful about fitment around the rear though. I had to get a hammer and punch to knock the corners down so it would seal properly.

Front portion of pan where you need to fill in:

The corners had to be hammered down to achieve a seal.

After the pan was buttoned up, the intake went on, and then the valve covers. Starting to look complete! I need to order some hardware for the timing chain cover and valve covers.

Side note. I've never installed freeze plugs. What sealant do you guys recommend? I was thinking about arp fastener sealant. Any suggestions welcome!

I use black RTV, but Indian Head is good stuff too. Some people even use JB Weld.

Just now stumbled on this forum. I have a 71 360 in my dart, so I might end up doing a similar build to you. Previous owner did some questionable things to it so might rebuild it soon. I will need to reference your build. Good luck with the rest of the build.
