Match Race 1966

........................................................................ Shipping Weight

1966 Valiant V-100 {Sedan} ~ 273/235 HP 'Commando' ...... #2814 lbs.
vs.
1966 Belvedere 'II' {Hardtop} ~ 383/270 HP {2-Barrel} ...... #3410 lbs.

Where do we go .........

High-Rev Small Block vs. Low-End Torque Big-Block

273/235 HP
* 235 HP @ 5200 RPM's
* 280 Ft/Lbs. of Torque @ 4000 RPM's

383/270 HP
* 270 HP @ 4400 RPM's
* 390 Ft/Lbs. of Torque @ 2800 RPM's

Transmission options? A well set up 4 speed & good chassis available, I would take the 273 A body combo. 3410 on a B body? Damn ,that's lightweight...

I go with the 273/235 HP... Because I been there.... Done that... (with a 4 speed & 3.55 rear)

My 2 Cents...

Clif of Az.

3, 6, 9, the Goose drinks Wine... a 273 beats a 409...

Stock - 273/235 HP vs. Stock - 383/270 HP

4-Speed w/3.91 Gears vs. 4-Speed w/3.91 Gears

The 'Lil' 273 jumps all over the Belvedere 383 {2-Barrel} coming out of the hole.

The high-winding 273 pulls away, and by mid-way down the Track it looks
like it is an '***-whipping'.

But those 273 Commando's 'flattened out' on the big-end.

The 383 gets to chugging at the end of 3rd-Gear, and makes a 'game' run down the
stretch.

Valiant 273 ......... 15.49 @ 86.8 MPH
Belvedere 383 ..... 15.85 @ 87.3 MPH

What I expected,unfortunately. Now when do the "class legal modifications" ,start? My brain tells me more camshaft/better valve springs /whatever is legal on intake tract/full on headers/273 build. 383 combo, the same. The equal work to both, inches will shine,in the long end in class racing.(unless there is a change in NHRA rulings)....

A-Body-Bomber,

I can remember 'way back in the time machine', a 1966 Belvedere 383/270 HP
running in 'K/SA' in 1969 {12.50 to 12.99 Wt/Hp}.

It was a Class Winner every week. Of course, no one could verify if it was
a 'Legal Stocker' or not. As it was never 'protested'.

I'm sure the 'jets' in the BBD were bored out to 'infinity'.

Ran 13.90's @ 100 MPH like 'Clockwork'.

The name of the car.......... 'Clockwork'

Correct,

The 1966 Belvedere 'II' Hardtop was surprisingly not that heavy.

R-J,

The 1966 > 383/270 {2-Barrel} did better in it's class than the 383/325 HP {4-Barrel}cars did.

Oddly in 1966,

The 4-Speed 383 cars were only available with 3.23 Gears. You could get the 3.55's
in a 727 Automatic 'only'.

Mopar didn't really strike it good with the mid-size 383 in 1966. The {4-Barrel} 383/325 HP was over-rated by a good {35 HP}, and everybody knew it.

They frightened 'no one'.
