Mowing with child on your lap

-
Dad had me driving, in traffic, at 8 years old. All was good until my Mother caught us.......

i know a kid who lost half of his foot when he was about 8 years old doing that. he slipped and lost 3 toes and part of a side. any more they would have had to take the whole foot.

People have choked and died eating. Should we quit eating

A neighbor was having his yard mowed by a contractor, and a rock flew up and broke the glass in the door right next to my front door. I was standing at the front door (outside) at the time, so was pretty close to getting beaned in the noggin with it.

We have an obligation to do everything in our power to keep everyone living until they die.

Around here kids drive the tractor while the anyone old enough to throw a hey bale is loading the trailer

Hold the child securely in your lap and drive the mower safely, it's fine.

My 2 1/2 year old grandson rides on my zero turn with me, ONLY, when the deck is not engaged. I ran too many calls for children injured from riding on or operating a mower at too young of an age.

I do however believe some children are more acclimated to it than others. The one thing that I had to stress to my kids was not to run up to me when I was mowing, as they had a very bad habit of doing. I tried to explain to them that they could slip and slide a foot right under the deck.

Common sense and safety should dictate each and every scenario.

Teach a kid to mow as soon as possible. They should make miniature riding mowers for babies to practice. Kids need to know the value of getting things accomplished around the house. Kids rode on the fender of old *** tractors all across the nation for years. All this shielding people from everything is just counter intuitive to the positive development of the species.
.

I was riding on the fender of a full size McCormmick (spelling?) Deering tractor when we were clearing the property to build our house.
My Mom and I dug the foundation ditches for the house, and while me and my younger siblings were at school during the day my Mom dug the line and hold for our septic system.

Thoes were the days, right gentelmen?

:d

This thing of thinking we need laws to protect the stupid is about down the same line as every kid gets a trophy and they all win. We are creating a world in which kids do not learn to protect themselves and blame/sue others.

:supz:u

The new generation of (educated kids) could tell you how to build a dumptruck, but they have no idea how to actually do it.
And the not so well educated go to work at some fast food place.
And yea, the "everyone gets a trophy" stuff should be reserved for mentally or otherwise not capable people to make them feel good about themselve's. (which is great in my oppinion)

I use to ride on my Grampas full size Massey Ferguson while he was tilling, raking, baling, etc. I would jump on and off, well one time I slipped jumping on and slipped right under the rear tractor tire, gramps never noticed me until he had driven over my leg! I was about 9 years old at the time, thankfully the ground was moist and soft, and the Massey pushed me into the ground more than it hurt me. Needless to say, shot offa the tractor grabbed me up and took me back to the farm and iced my leg. Nothing broken, torn, just Grampas nerves! LOL RIP Gramps miss ya every day. Id let ya run me over again to spend another day with you.

I've been hit in the head with a 2" rock that was thrown from a push mower about 30'. Maybe that's why I'll putt around the yard with my 3 year old daughter on a three wheeler, or let my 6 year old sit on my lap and drive my Mustang, or let my 7 year old shoot a .22 or maybe why I let my 9 year old drive my truck done the driveway or backroads by himself.

Everything is dangerous or a bad idea this days. Obviously, I'm around whenever they are doing something and I'm worse than any soccer mom. I'm vigilant as hell, but I'd never let them do something overtly dangerous. People can criticize if they want, but my kids will look back and remember these times as some of the best in their lives. I have also known more kids than not who are incapable of doing ANYTHING because their parents didn't let them, show them, or teach them how to. My children also know that if they abuse a priviledge or attempt something without me, that I will whoop their a$$. Yeah, I spank my children, but only when they absolutely deserve it and never in excessive force. I guess I'm a bad parent, but at least my children will be competent when they're older.

Exactly.
My friend and I were recalling growing up out in the yard, the field, the woods, driving the old bomber car on the gravel roads, shooting things with the bow and arrow / .22, playing with gallons of gasoline, running around with a machete chopping down trees and blowing up yellow jacket nests with firecrackers.

Now he lived for 8 years in a little apartment in a complex and his kids rarely went outside. The oldest boy about 12 cant do anything sensible. He is completely like a deer in the headlights and the rest of the kids younger are growing up the same way. Fortunately they got a house with an acre back yard so maybe the kids might learn something about the physical world around them..

Society wants people to turn to jelly, live in a beehive, fully reliant on the one day supply of coffee, water, food and the laws and systems for their safety, guidance and protection.
Sucking on the teet every morning. Buying useless crap which either out-dates or breaks in 6 months to fill up a microcosim in an overpriced condo stacked on top of millions of others doing the same damd thing.

Just wandering around bumping off the padded walls built of laws in the guidance-protection system designed to keep us from accidentally over extending our accepted approved bubble.

:puke:

My grandfather and dad would both let me ride on the dozer & backhoe when they were working. By 9-10 years old I was allowed to operate both of them :D My dad would make jokes. 'oh ****, look out, chris is on the dozer! run for your lives" :D

By 10 I had learned to drive a stick, and spent the winters plowing snow in a 5-speed 4x4 dumptruck. Around the same time I had learned to drive a 4-speed stick with a 2-speed rear. Raise your hands, how many of you know what i'm talking about? A shifter sticking up through the floor, with a knob on the stalk to change the rear end gears :D In a '55 Chevy 6500 series Dumptruck.

and of course around 9-10 I was allowed to start using the Torch, Welder, Grinder, Lathe, etc to build/repair my own stuff. Spent alot of time chopping firewood too, and at 12 I got upgraded from an Ax/Maul to a chainsaw. Best Childhood in my opinion. I'm in my early/mid 20's now and others my own age (who lived sheltered lives) don't even know how to check their own oil, and if their food doesn't come in a microwaveable container they're clueless.

agreed, there were plenty of late afternoons that my daughter fell asleep
(firmly held ) in my lap on the rider, hell it was the only way to get anything done and her to sleep some days.
she is now 12 and has all her fingers and toes....

people need to use common sense....Nuff Said

I would hold my son by his sneakers and make him pull the clogged grass out of the shoot to prevent clumps in the yard. But first I showed him how far the blade was from the edge

He was always willing to give me a hand. Of course I would make him wear saftey glasses. Incase he had to look under.

When men were men and sheep were nervous:D

I knew a kid that fell off a tractor that his grandfather was using to mow grass. He fell off and went under the finish mower. Luckily the doctors were able to put most of his legs back together. Kids have no business being near machinery.

Lots of us have done it.....I have too. I got too close to an oak tree with a front wheel and it climbed the trunk and tipped over backwards. Thank God my little wasn't on my lap. The neighbor down the street was mowing with his Lawn Boy along side his driveway. Little did he know that his toddler son was following him and when he stopped at the street and pulled the mower backwards he cut his son's leg off. I heard the screams almost a block away. The young lad has a prosthetic leg and is doing fine. The thing is that accidents happen and a bit of safety and common sense can prevent bad things from happening. tmm
