My HDK install thread.

-
I'll be watching. I may want to do this swap one day.
Another great thread younggun.

THANKS!

I come from a fabrication background. I have built/modified nearly everything on my car and like to think that i have high standards. I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of this front suspension. This thread is meant to inform members what the normal blue collar guy can expect from this kit. I will hopefully start the mock up tonight and provide more pictures.

Man! That thing sounds strong! Ede heads? Massaged or OTB? Camshaft? Converter? Rear gear? Thanks.

Mild port work on heads. Bowl clean up and port matched. Came is comp solid lifter. .525 lift and .250 @ .050. Rear gear is 4.10. 4500 rpm stall. 8.5" from dynamic. Hoping to go mid 11s

Got started on the install tonight. Doing a dry fit first to drill my holes and verify everything fits.

First I installed the k member as it came outta the box. You use the factory k member bolts.

Then I installed the steering rack bushings. I am using a manual rack. It is mustang II. Any mustang from 1974-78.

Then I installed the rack onto the k member. Had to go buy a 15/16 box end wrench because you have to have one for nut on steering rack mount.

I have allot more to post. Will do more in the morning

Then I installed the upper coil over mount. This a several mounting bolts. the first was the upper bolt. It goes thru the factory shock hole. There is a bushing that must be pushed into the hole. I used the supplied bolt to press it into place.

upper hole.

Then you have to drill a hole thru the inner fender and stock shock support bracket. there is a sleeve for this hole as well. this hole needs only the 1/2" inner hole drilled.

It was at that point I was very impressed. The HDK brackets fits absolutely perfect! This is pretty critical because it used some factory holes.

Then i installed the upper coil over mount support hoop. I tightened the upper bolts so that the brackets were parallel.

This positioned the hoop so that i could drill my holes thru the frame.

the front of the hoop was hitting a very large sloppy factory weld. I had to grind it smooth then it fit flush.

Then drilled the hole. you drill 3/8 all way thru both sides of the frame. be very careful to drill straight and level.

the rear hoop mount was away from the frame about 3/16" so i clamped it in place with the front and upper bolts in place

then drilled that 3/8 hole all way thru both sides of frame. once that was done i pulled the upper hoop all way back out

now you drill ONLY THE OUTSIDE HOLES TO 1/2"

then you slide the supplied sleeves into place and bolt thru them. this effectively creates a sleeved hole thru the frame so that you dont collapse the frame rail when you tighten the bolts.

now you can reinstall the hoop

then i installed the upper control arms. I used one aluminum spacer per side of the bushings.

this is the upper in with the ride height adjustment bars in place.

then i installed the spindle and tie rod end

then on with the brakes.

that is pretty much the entire passenger side installed with one guy in about 2 hrs taking my time and reading the install guidelines several times over.

Thanks for the great clear pictures and instructions on such a clean machine.
It looks like if you did a couple of those that you could do them in your sleep!

You should be the official HDK install facility in the Pacific NW! Can't wait for
more pics, the install finish and the first drive report. Other than stopping for
painting or powder coating it seems these could be completed in a day or two.

Nice car.

yes if it was painted ahead of time it could be done in a weekend. I cant stress how great the fit and finish is with this unit.

Nice OSHA approved footwear. LOL

Looks good so far! No, not your foot...

When I visited at Denny's last summer he was dressing all of the edges of the laser cut pieces (said it makes for the
cleanest welds) and was even chasing all of the rod end threads in the control arms. He was packaging a K-member
kit and he test fit every piece of it before sending it out. He spent a lot of time doing this, lots of attention to detail.

Must be out for Paint/powder coat?

I WISH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I worked 42hrs in 3 days at work. I will be working out of state on Saterday also. Hope to have more updates Sunday and Monday.

Happy Memorial Day weekend guys. hope you put some miles on your rides.

The HDK is a pretty basic install untill you get to the front and rear ride height I want to see how yours will set and what you used to get there

What do you mean? I Ordered 10" coil overs and 500lb springs. My rear ride height shouldn't be effected.
