ProComp/Speedmaster aluminum heads

One day, riding the motorcycle to work, I ended up with some metal in my eye so bad I could taste it on my tongue. Went to the doc. THAT was an experience! Zero pain. Took the metal shard out he did.

I literally had a doctor chase me to the corner of the room and stabbed my arm to get a needle in me! I absolutely detest needles!
If you've had more than excellent vision for 50 years plus and you wake up one morning and three quarters of your vision is gone in your left eye, your attitude changes about certain things. For instance you completely lose your depth perception up close and you have to ask your (very nice) gay neighbor across the street if he could come over and put the second bead of RTV on top of your first bead on the China wall because you can't....
When you're faced with not being able to see your grandkids correctly and stuff like that you start to look at that needle a whole different way... LITERALLY!
I'd say it brought it back to about eighty-five 90% good in my left eye with the shot... it's still a little bit irritating sometimes cuz I notice it but it certainly has brought my vision back to where I can put my second bead on top of my first bead on my China Wall myself....
So whats wrong with your eyes?, do you go to Casey eye institute?, all too familiar with that stuff!

BAZINGA!...

Of course business before pleasure let's not forget about the two needles I had in my eyeball this morning first. :poke::thumbsup:

Be a sweet pontiac when you get done... Lol. Quit with the eyeball pics, that like freaking me out... I can't stand anything around my eyes.

That's for everybody torturing me for the last 2 weeks LOL...

I haven't found anything I really don't like about them so far. I just gave them a good look over(good Lord to make sure they're the right ones LOL) took some pictures and put them in the garage. Likely not to be really seen for quite some time.
I did like the fact that they didn't have any script writing on them or anything like that just generic flat surface. If anything they need to have J par machined into them! LOL...

Hard to argue with that.
I called two small machine shops and one said eighty bucks to take them apart and take a look and the next shop said 25 to 50 bucks...
At this point I'm just kind of on the fence whether I ought to just pull them apart myself and just by a eyeball make sure I don't one have to either pound them out LOL or they're so loose they're like throwing a hotdog down the hallway LOL? And maybe take the Springs down and have their spring rates checked real quick? I so terribly do not like letting things get out of my hands....
Maybe have the deck flatness checked?..

They have marking compound. Check out the guides, if good. A little bit of compound, rotate the valve, check the pattern. If looks good, put all back together, a little alchoal, watch for a seal... Might be wrong, but I think it be all you need.

Do you have a straight edge? You can check the flatness... I would, just for ***** and giggles change the springs...

I’m not sure how old you are but you seem to enjoy cars and working on them. If you are younger start buying good tools and using them. Guys on here will guide you on there use. I had my local shop that does my machine work order me a good straight edge that never leaves my shop so someone doesn’t use it for a prybar. Buy a good spring compressior and it will hold most of its value and won’t leave you down. The money you save doing this yourself goes a long way. I can’t tell you how many springs I’ve taken off with this tool. Cheap? No!!!! Excellent tool??? YES

The reason I bought a shop full of expensive machines is because anyone/everyone can do the same job, with the same level of experience and expertise in their garage at home with a handful of tools from Harbor Freight as someone who’s been doing it for many years.........right?
Same with price...... the shop that’s the cheapest....... is probably the best.
Just like with heart surgeons.

Support your local machine shops...... while you still have local machine shops.

Nobody and I said nobody is ever going to make me wait a crazy amount of time while my stuff sits in a corner in their shop. Been there done that 43 years ago when I waited 13 months to get a 12 second engine built. And I tore the core and heads down for him. Now I get a crank back in 3-5 days max and s machined block in 5-7 days. MAX.

Until the shops you use close up.

But then I guess you’ll just find another one.
They’re all the same, right?

Just like everyone who does heads does them just as good as you would.

And who(besides you) said anything about waiting a long time?

There will always be guys that won’t or can’t do their own work. Have shops closed, sure. All shops aren’t the same and I’m sure you know that. The best part of racing to me has always been learning how to do my own work so I can have pride in the work I did, not someone else. Sorry that upset you but that’s hot rodding to me. Not dropping off an engine and picking it up done ready to install. And trust me old dogs can learn new tricks. 3 years ago I started doing my own powerglide transmissions after my friends health started slipping. Next up Ford 9 inch rearends.

It doesn’t upset me one bit.

I just think it’s funny how someone will risk their whole motor to save a few bucks.
The more expensive of the quotes to inspect jpars heads was $80....... and it seems like the reasoning for not doing it is the cost.
I don’t think $80 is going to go very far in procuring all the tools necessary to properly inspect those heads.
Hell, my guide bore gage was over $1200.

I wasn't trying to get professional results at home being a first-timer with a couple Harbor Freight Tools LOL... and by a long shot I'm certainly not trying to duck out of 50 to $80 to make sure my motor doesn't blow up! LOL... I absolutely have no problem supporting my local machine shop whatsoever. My engine was put together by a machine shop and my head's refreshing up at the time. The next year I took the heads off and had the 188 exchange for 202 and a couple hours of head grinding. I've taken customers stuff to shops that are close by. My biggest problem is I do like to do absolutely everything within reason and I know that's a big scale that I can do myself. I really don't like to be a subcontractor... Honestly this is my favorite part about the car is learning how to do new stuff but I don't plan on being a machinist a painter a body guy the front end man a transmission guy a rear end guy but I have done all that stuff and do like doing as much as I possibly can not only to save money but it's interesting and that's why I like having the car. It's very much my hobby...Some people just like dusting them off and driving around the painted perfect car that somebody else built or they took it to people to have things done.... I'm not...

I also got to say I appreciate your thoughts on the subjects we talked about from a machine shop perspective..
