Replacement 68 340 four speed cams

Again how can my 239 n/a go 151 limited by the ecm with a police certified speedometer. And my Barracuda was figured by rpm/tire dia/and gear ratio. But the speedometer said like 10 mph as it went all the way around. Guess none of you guys have ever been there or the ones that have might go a little faster if you wanted to learn from some of us old guys, but we're all just having delusions. That;s how I got started I watched the guys going fast. My stories are real and I just try to pass them along but I sure don't have to prove anything to you guys. Try to tell this to the 200 mph club around Lansing Michigan and this is way before anyone heard of a Hellcat. We were a wild bunch with our cars. I've had many 340's but I knew what I was doing with them and I've been racing for over 55 years. Make fun if you want but if you're ever Detroit way I still race for $$$. And I just don't own Mopars. And read post 264 again. And yes I also use radar guns and other scientific equipment and always have. It's hard to trust a speedo on a boat. Ever do any offshore racing? But it's been fun and I've owned a lot of muscle cars, pony cars Mopar or not and I was fortune enough to live in the Detroit aera where they were plentiful. And I'm still having fun with them.

Pretty funny. RRRs' 340 in Pettys, favorite NASCAR body and you guys can't believe it... When I lived in South Dakota, I'd take my 64 Barracuda 273, 4 speed car out into the country and wind it up to 140 mph every month. I did nor run recaps. The odometer was within a couple miles after 200 miles of interstate driving. That car would do 100 mph in 3rd gear. Not sure how fast his 73 Road runner was going, but I bet it was flying.

When I worked for Chrysler, our Florida State Highway Patrol C-Body cars would easily do over 140 mph with a simple jet change. They would flat out walk away from a helicopter.

As a young man heading down the straight shot road, County Rd 47 in the late evening flat out with the stock '73 Barracuda 340/727/3.23 > 340 cam of course.

The front end was literally floating with the natural ups and downs of the road, remember it well.

She was flying, those were the days. Not another car in sight...like a Vanishing Point.

My uncle worked for a Tennesse police dept. in the 60's and he used to test all the new cars and any that would not do 140 went back to the dealer. I'll bet the techs had fun with that one.

What's hilarious to me is, I never said how fast we were GOING, only what the speedometer read. Yet I get roasted for telling a true story. Sure, I remember the car fondly, and yeah, I agree that it probably wasn't truly as fast as all us young dumb kids thought, but we were having fun. I love how all the experts come out. Hell, I've had Vixen up to about 125 (by the speedometer). She was spinnin right below 6K. Maybe 5800 or so? But I guess that's bullshit, too. I think this'll be the last time I share anything like this here. I have a lot more, too.
Ya never know, but it is exhilarating. My 95 Twin Turbo RT Stealth could fly, had it going down hill at 130 still in forth gear (6 speed) then realized how stupid that was on a narrow country 2 lane road. Plenty of side roads and hidden driveways for some old farmer to pop out of, death for sure. Had many fast cars since (GT 500, 99 Vette Z06, currant SRT Challenger) but not going to test my luck again being 75. The old cars I had were fast but nearly as fast as todays hot cars

Yall better be careful, or they'll claim yall are fulla ****, too. lol

Ok how bout this, for everyone claiming big numbers form their old junk, make us believers. Go out and do it, film it, (in Mexico of course) and put it up right here for all of us to see. No more stories, no more speculation, no more hearsay. We have how many members on this forum, hundreds of thousands? Surely someone has video of their stock 340 barracuda or dart going over 150. I’ll wait.

I had the same feeling in my cuda.

Easy NancyRatRod take it in jest, let’s just all have a little fun here and poke a bear every now and then. I wholeheartedly believe you and your buddies jumped in your car and held it to the wood. I’m pretty sure as young dumb kids we all did that. I just like callin BS when I hear magical stories of Monday built hot rods doing things no other similar car did. It’s all in good fun.

I didn't say that either. Also, I'm completely open to speedometer discrepancies. We all know how the older cable driven units work. None of them are linear. And, the faster they register when they are "off" the more exponentially they become "off" the faster you go. So I got no problem admitting it was probably wrong.....all I did and am still doing is simply stating WHAT the speedometer read. In fact, I even spoke with Kirk last night about it to see what he recalled. He said he vividly remembers the speedometer pointing straight down, but he said since he was in the passenger's seat, his angle of view wasn't the greatest. We both agreed that it is safe to say we were doing every bit of 130 and probably "a little more". So go like "callin bs" on something else, because not only is it not warranted here, it's gettin fuckin old.
I’ll say this also, you probably weren’t even goin 130.

We attributed the speedometer discrepancy on our bike to tire growth.

And I'm still having fun. fun, fun, fun till her daddy takes her Barracuda away. And did you know there's 7 feet of cargo room. But that rear window can be cold on your ***.

Ahhhhh more bench racing must prove it BS. No sign will be given.

I believe the formula for top speed HP goes as:

($ x APR) + 5W = S x .99, where

$=$
APR = variable
5W = lodging
S = speed
.99 = "I'll be back next year" coefficient

And: I think it goes... all the power you can afford dose not go as fast as you want.

From Carroll Smith's book [Tune to Win] Drag HP= CD X Frontal area X ( Velocity in mph) to the 3rd power divided by
146,600

His example Drag HP = (.65) X ( 17 FT) x (180 mph) to the 3rd power OR 180 X180X 180
--------------------------------
146,600 = 439 HP

It is proportional to the cube of the speed. The force due to drag is proportional to the square. To get power you have to multiply by the rate. Therefore the power is proportional to the cube of the speed.

If it takes 100 hp to go 100 mph then to go 200 it is the ratio of (200/100) cubed times 100 hp or 800 hp.

This thread is hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. I’ll say one thing, I was part of a team that earned two FIA world records at bonneville in two days. We went 164.669mph officially and 171.642 mph peak. I know what it takes to get there. No charger, dart, barracuda or any other old hooptie with a stock 340 is getting there. I dont care what the speedo said, who saw it, and/or how many people saw it, I ain’t believing it. I’ve personally been clocked at 211mph on two wheels at El Mirage and my Speedo said 231. Just sayin.

Ok fine. I will use the GoPro to film my Bonneville speed run this summer with a purpose built aero car to prove how slow it really is.

Could always just film driving in the car then edit and speed it up to ludicrous speed... :poke: :thumbsup:

P.S. I remember being in 10th grade me and this other kid,our lifes goal was to get a 69 Charger and "Jump the river" Dukes style.

Thank god by 19 or 20 we grew up and never attempted it. We had a plan though it involved running the car for 10 blocks at top speed than hitting a ramp to jump maybe 40 yards across. Glad we never attempted it.
