Looking for the correct speedo cable for a 68 Barracuda with a 904 TF. Using aftermarket Autometer speedp gauge.

What type of connection does the autometer enter have.

Photos are helpful

68 up uses a snap in connector
67 and older use a screw on connector

Yeah, I noticed 68 was snap in for OE. Gauge is screw on. That's why I'm here asking so I'm not driving a square peg into a round hole :)

There are numerous screw sizes

This is he one I used in my 67 Dart.

It is the same for barracuda in 67 (should fit 68 -69) for length and trans end.

I just measured the speedo and it comes out to 5/8 - 18

I don't know what meter you have . This is the first one I pulled up

5/8 - 18 thread

Also, what is the thread size on the gear housing on a 904?

By my measurements 7/8"

I don't know the thread pitch

Got the new speedo cable installed, which fixed the "bouncing" speedometer. However, I still have a leak coming from the gear housing. I had a slight leak prior and replaced both seals when replacing the cable. When I pulled the old cable, ATF came out of the cable. Pulled the new cable after I installed it, same thing. Any ideas as to what is going on?

The Inner shaft seal is not sealing.

There is a depth that it gets installed to.

It does not get pushed all the way in , IIRC

Look at the FSM.

Also the direction you install it is important

Noted. I'll pull it apart and reseal. Time to take another ATF bath.

When I did mine I had the rear end in the air (jack stands at their lowest level under the rear axle) and the front on the ground and that was enough for not a drop of fluid to me out.

Yes, there is a specific depth the seal should be installed. Look for pitting on the stem of the gear. Also look to see that the retaining wire is holding the inner seal in the appropriate place.

Just so happens I was on your website awhile back looking at speedo gears and I was going to call into you guys asking about this topic. Appreciate the info here.

Who knew there was a tool! Just bought it.

I designed and 3D printed an 8 3/4 axel seal installer to set the seal to the proper depth and square in the bore. Worked like a champ.

Are there instructions or a video out there somewhere to show exactly how to use it? I'm new to the project car scene and cutting my teeth as I go along.

There probably is in a FSM. The tool pushes the seal into the proper depth, then put the wire in place and push again. Make sure the "open" side of the seal faces the oil.

Will ATF running into the speedo cable ruin it?
No, might make the outer sheeting soft, maybe 60 years from now it will fail.

My 67 had been leaking trans fluid from the cable for 40 years. Cable had come in contact with the exhaust manifold 40+ years ago, melted all the sheathing off in a 2 inch spot.

The rest of the sheathing was good but stiff as a 56 year old pop tart

Ha was just looking at that and was about to take a screen shot. Will ATF running into the speedo cable ruin it?
You will want to clean out the cable and re-grease. Oil tends to work it's way up the cable, and can end up in the speedometer. I have seen it happen.

Tool from Brewer's worked like a charm. Unfortunately, jacked up the rear and still lost about a quart of ATF (oh well). I used 7" race ramps so maybe it wasn't high enough? Three days since seal was properly installed and no leaks whatsoever.

On another note, ATF looked/smelled a bit burnt and had a metallic sheen to it. Looks like a rebuild or replacement is in my near future. If I decide to replace altogether, any reputable transmission companies out there that sell 904's with warranties?

I wouldn't worry unless the oil in the pan was the same. I had crap in the tailshaft housing fluid that looked like hell, transmission is fine. Maybe that's why the seal is leaking

Unfortunately, same case with the trans pan in regards to shavings. ATF doesn't look as burnt/metallic sheen but that's because new fluid was added prior to removing it.
