Stop in for a cup of coffee

I dont by the whole freeze and thaw thing. Ive been to Europe, which gets colder winters and as hot as summers as we do. Their roads are nearly flawless. granted their taxes are higher but I think its in the materials we use. I'm no engineer but asphalt doesnt hold up well at all. Hell, race tracks have to repave every few years.
Yep!

The autobahn is 27 inches thick, or 686 millimetersthick. The life span is 40 years, compared to 20 years for the United States freeway system that is 11 inches thick. Does the thick construction help you drive faster? The freeze-resistant concrete helps keep the road smooth.Mar 18, 2011

There is one thing that really tears up roads, Heavy trucking and trucks..

Freeze thaw tears our roads up here in Iowa. The liquid salt brine solution is eating the concrete and our bridges.

Yep, the salt solution gets thru the cracks made by the ice, and attacks the re bar. We need to use stainless rebar!

That right there is the big difference. Most US new asphalt construction is about 8". Concrete Interstates are 24" of concrete. 12" of good concrete on top of 12" of "leancrete (about a 3sack mix)". Asphalt is only as good as the base material under it.

Europe has heavy trucks too... But as noted, its the thickness that helps.

Wow .. Big difference between grades. 10 cents here between grades.

Yeah, I noticed it's also different between same stations in different locations...

The one near work had the same price for regular and I filled up with premium there, then went to a station near my grocery store with the same price for regular and premium was 20 cents cheaper there... :wtf:

I don't go to the one near work any more.... :icon_fU:

Ok, it's been fun, but time to go to work and spread the cold to others...

(If we call in, we don't get the vacation pay for the two days off...)

Yep, be heading in soon myself. I covered Monday with a vacation day. Was not a paid holiday. They decided about a week ago to shut down that day and this Saturday is now a scheduled work day for everyone. So I must work that, but will be OT for me.

If they stay below freezing, they don't cycle as much. When they cycle, the water fills the cracks each time it thaws. Then freezes and expands again. rinse and repeat. That is a DAILY event for much of the winters here. Add in the salt factor and its more effective than a jackhammer.
