I dont by the whole freeze and thaw thing. Ive been to Europe, which gets colder winters and as hot as summers as we do. Their roads are nearly flawless. granted their taxes are higher but I think its in the materials we use. I'm no engineer but asphalt doesnt hold up well at all. Hell, race tracks have to repave every few years.
It's called low bid...

Freeze thaw tears our roads up here in Iowa. The liquid salt brine solution is eating the concrete and our bridges.
The big advantage of salt over sand mix is that there's no need to sweep up.

No idea why we have so many potholes around here.

water washes away sand...
That's a big pile of rock salt that sat for weeks after the November snow.
The City uses no sand, same for most townships both sides of the river, at least down here.
Some Northwestern Jersey townships weren't using any salt, but bet almost all of them are now with the expansion of the suburban commuters since 2000.

At best sand collects in the curbs when there are no drainage ditches. It would be a super problem for the city only because some brainiac decided there are no trees in areas like mine, so they don't pick up the leaves. It just all accumulates in the curbs except where homeowners pick 'em up. What washes down the water department removes from the sewers with the aid of boom truck....

around here, all they use now is a brine mix that really seems to work like crap.

Speaking of which I'm going to go shred some more leaves in the back. :)
