around here, all they use now is a brine mix that really seems to work like crap.
Big advantage is they can put it on and it dries. As long as it's not really heavy traffic it will work next time it gets wet.. Not much sand around here. Some gravel though

It's a budget thing. One trip laying the material and it works. No extra money to heat the sand. Our budgets are stretched pretty thin as it is.
Philly uses snow-melter trucks with giant heaters in them to collect and melt the snow so they can discharge it as water down the storm sewers. I figure they should just fill up with sand on the way to the next pick up point and heat it up and spread it on the streets on their way there.
 
I started a new job today so I am pooped

I hardly slept last night because I was nervous about it. Turned out to be a lot easier than I thought.
