Agree. Really don't need a gasket unless the surfaces were damaged.
The heat shields use a flat sheet metal 'gasket' as an attachment method.
The idea of the middle ports communicating bothers me.

Not sure what's under there yet. Haven't pulled the manifolds yet.

Any reason why MA Mopar only put heat shields on the one side?

Because the drivers manifolds are "upswept" and without the shields you have a good chance of frying boots.
