Stop in for a cup of coffee

I think the one I have has had its fair share of carb fires. There was a LOT of soot everywhere. The main issue right now is the caking and oxidization on the outside of the carb, especially in all the places where a wire wheel won't reach. I'm thinking of getting some glass blasting media but I'm not sure how abrasive it would be.

Walnut shells for media.

Don't it will make it porous. Try some CLR a product here to remove calcium, lime and rust. Get a cid brush cut the bristles down so they are stiff and just work it in with it. Usually gets 99% of it.

If it is pitted aluminum you will want to try to seal it afterwards. I just hit the area with high heat clear and a small brush.

Is that what you'd use for all aluminum parts?
Yeah, I've used it for delicate items and items that are made of soft metals. Other than that, I use aluminum oxide in my blast cabinet, however, it can be pretty abrasive and leave a coarser finish than desired sometimes.

The only things I blast if they absolutely need it are the steel base plates and the throttle plates. Never hit the aluminum for what mitch said.

Getting ready right now to blast these hinges and bolts with Al/Ox . I'll post a pic of what they look like bare, in a little while.

What do you call the smooth finish on cast alum? I found when that is gone I usually add it to scrap, to many carbs with weird problems, prob air or fuel going to strange places when that is gone.

I just did a little google search and it seems glass beads can be found pretty easily. The site I found (in Swedish) claims the glass beads even out the surface like shot peening.

I'm only really talking about the outside of the base so it's not the most delicate parts.

Give it a try just cover all the holes up well. Might want to put the adjustment screws in to be safe that could be a PIA to get out afterward. Got a rebuild diagram?

Yup.. I've used glass also..More expensive I believe.

Aint had much Beer this month... Working on fitness !!!

I actually haven't lifted the caps on the adjustment screws. I've been meaning to ask whether I need to do that.

On my AFB there are no caps. They don't really need to be there, do they?

No there do not have to be was a factory screw the mechanic thing. There are aluminum plugs over the adjusting screws, prob a good thing means that carb was not messed with much. Just drill a small 1/8 hole in the aluminum by the end then just use a punch on a angle they usually just punch out. Google it. That is the easiest way, they did sell a tool that was a pia it was a plate that screwed on then a mini hole saw to cut around the cap. You want to take them off and the screws out before cleaning it, leave them on for the blast.

Those things can be NASTY !!
In more than one way...First they scare the crap out of me when mowing under a tree loaded. Ya never know where the next one is going to land.
Then they stain your hands if you get the 'juice' on you. And I think they are at least slightly toxic. When I first moved there, I shelled a bunch. Having a bunch of the hulles busted open in front of me, the fumes off them things were getting to me. Some people like them, but they got kinda strange bitter taste. Not worth the effort to me. Squirrels can have them. They stole most of them I had drying in the shed anyway. LOL
