Anyone have experience with Stovers in Lisbon? Are they a reputable and honest machine shop with experience? I'm looking at an engine block they have where a customer backed out on the deal. Machining halted at the cylinder hone due to the customer backing out. One cylinder was sleeved, this is for a street engine.

Hey there, I have lived in Salem Ohio, 5 minutes from Lisbon, my entire life, and I haven't heard of them. Not saying they aren't good, just surprised I haven't, given the dozen around here I have heard of.

What are you looking for? Or to have done?

I'm looking at an engine block he advertised on FB marketplace, specifically a 5.2 magnum block that had been sleeved on #8, blasted clean, baked, jet washed, decked, bored to honing diameter for .030 over. Their website is stoversps.com. The shop owner told me he acquires blocks and reconditions them. He explained that the #8 cylinder had rust pitting that required boring .050 to remove, hence the sleeve. He said that the sleeve is heavy enough that it would allow for .060 over safely if ever desired.

Just clarified/edited above.
I'm not sure what you are willing to give for a reman 5.2 block (which would still need finish honed to whatever pistons you were going to run?) But I would imagine pull a part up in Akron or youngstown would have a complete running condition 5.2 or 5.9 for a few hundred bucks, with a guarantee they would give you another if it turned out to be bad. That's me assuming you are doing something stock, or inexpensive, since not many focus on a 318. Not sure if thats the case

Thanks for the advice. It's basically a warmed up engine with a mild cam. I had thought about a junkyard engine, still considering it. I can get one for $400 with 130K miles on it. I have rebuilt heads with better valve springs and the cam, maybe I should just get the junkyard engine, swap the heads, cam and lifters and run it. It's a lot less money for a basically stock engine. Out of curiosity, should I expect success without milling the deck of a junkyard engine and just swapping heads?

I'm not sure what heads/Cam you have, but I would think a Virgin 360 or 5.9l could be easily found vs. A 318. I'm not much of a junkyard crawler, given my career choice, but I wouldn't give up "free" cubes for anything. Especially when a recently running 5.9 could be found for what someone is probably asking for a sleeved 318 block.

Thanks for weighing in Johnny Mac, it's good advice, I'm going with a junkyard engine. I've been happy with the power of my current 318 that developed a crack in the block after 2 seasons and 5000 miles. My oldest son and I rebuilt it together, it was my first fully built engine and his too at age 15. He and I were pretty disappointed to find that out after it going so long. The good thing is that it didn't show up until after my 2 sons and I completed the whole Hot Rod Power Tour with it last summer. Anyway, I'm going 5.2 magnum because my nice new torque converter is for an internal balanced engine. So it's really for cost and time savings. I know it doesn't make sense in value per cubic inch, but I play with the cards I'm dealt. One day I hope to have one of your Blueprint 408s in my car!

You can easily just grab the flexplate with the 5.9 (360) and that will allow you to use your neutral ballance converter. You will only need to slot one torque converter bolt hole slightly. Easy peasy

Also, I'm in salem, 44460. I'm sure I have spare smallblock parts laying around if ya need anything. Same with the ebay pile at the BluePrint plant.

Another " gotta have a damn 360" I can't be the only one here that's sick and tired of that mentality. Not like 360s are holy grail or anything (they're not)

That's because the 340 is. Hey someone had to say it.

Not what I said at all. I simply pointed out, if hes junkyard shopping, the flexplate issue is easy to overcome.
