From what I herd the automatic car never race as an automatic car. It was supposed to be a 4 speed car. So Hurst but the 4 speed stuff in the trunk and Landy swap it out at his shop?

Dave,

Somewhat correct

Dick Landy was at the Hot Rod Magazine Championships on March 23 & 24 in 1968
and was running an LO 23 in SS/BA.

The other LO 23 was 'tagged' as an Automatic, and was shipped to Dick Landy
in a Storage Box via Railway ti his shop in Sherman Oaks, California.

That car was shipped with all the Clutch-Linkage in the Trunk.

There is an article and a few good pictures featuring the auto car, in Motor Trend July ´68. But I guess it really doesn´t say anything in the auto/stick matter...

Daves Cuda

One was an Automatic, and one was a 4-Speed.

Dick Landy first raced an LO23 at the 1968 Hot Rod Magazine Championships at
Riverside International Raceway {California} on March 23 & 24.

Dick Landy raced the Automatic in SS/BA.

Dick Landy LO23 Race Hemi Dart's
LO23 M8B 297859 ..... 4-Speed
LO23 M8B 297866 ..... Automatic

I know the guy who owned Landy's 4 speed LO23 and sold it for a finished LO23.

Lets be honest here. A forum is just a business were the users (us) provide the free content that drive more more traffic here. So unless they (website owner(s)) believe more money or content will come in from a new section their is no incentive to carve out server space for it.

Great point But I am thinking positive side. These people send a lot of money on these cars. So this site with all this info could benefit from this. Then you add in the people building or want to build clones. This will be the place to come. Then you get people that selling the clone parts, they may advertise on this website. Look at how many member are here. No body else does this full package. Then you will get the SS/AH guys hopefully possible more advertising. This will not be a waste of space for sure.

We all like to make money. I want this site to make more money. We all want this site to keep going.

Yes, I don't have anything to post since I will never be able to own one however, they are history in my book and true factory race cars!

ya know, many guys on this site are working on restoring their first mopar, some guys have been working on the same car the last 5 yrs, some longer.

many guys on here have never had the priviledge of seeing in person these rare factory racers, be it an old track, or at places like mopar nats or Carlisle. but for those of us that have, me, I know for sure, it holds a special place in memory.

Why is there even a poll for this??
Super stock A bodies are awesome, and an important part in mopar history, especially for us A body guys.
I've never seen a super stock mopar down here in Australia, only in the US, when I visited the nhra museum in California. I could never afford one, but would love to build a clone one day.
So I could sort through endless pages of half correct info out there on the internet or I could go to the best A body site on the planet and look under the LO&BO section and find what I'm looking for easily and know it would be correct information from guys that have worked on them, owned them, raced them, etc. .

BO 29

One of the original 1968 BO 29 Barracuda Race Hemi Super Stock cars was damaged
during a delivery.

Town & County Plymouth ~ Phoenix, Arizona

The car {Automatic} was shipped to Phoenix via the typical Car Hauler,

When the Barracuda was being backed off the Trailer, the track-rails shifted
and the car went 'splash' to the pavement.

The entire right back rear body had buckled, and the rear frame-rails bent like a Pretzel.

The large back Window Glass panel popped out and landed on the ground.

It was called 'The Phoenix Flop'.

The BO 29 was shipped back to Detroit, and stripped of the 'goodies'.

A replacement BO 29 was 'never' sent back to Phoenix.

'The Phoenix Flop'

Town & Country Chrysler-Plymouth ~ Phoenix, Arizona were the biggest Mopar High-Performance
Dealership in the Southwest Region.

They were big performers early S/S cars, and AWB cars during the mid-60's.

They ordered a 1968 BO-29 Race Hemi Barracuda {Automatic} from the 'initial' batch of
1st Produced BO-29 cars.

It was shipped to them via Car Hauler {with several other 1968 factory Model cars} in
early-March.

'The Phoenix Flop'

As per Eddie Jansen, who was there to help unload the BO-29.

The Barracuda had been loaded onto the car hauler, 'nose first'.

Instead of getting a few guys on the Hauler, and push the Barracuda off, we made a major mistake.

We had somebody from the dealership get in the car, and start the thing up. It was as loud as Hell.
The guy put the Transmission in 'Reverse', and he tried to back it up at idle. The car stalled.

Then he started it up again. But when he put it in gear, it stalled again.

The 3rd-time, he started it up, and revved it up while he put it in gear. Well, the rear tires
grabbed the right side ramp, and it snapped the rail like a sling-shot.

The Barracuda came crashing to the pavement on it's right rear. A 10-Foot drop.

The right-real quarter-panel buckled like a Pretzel. The back glass panel popped out, and
landed on the right-side of the car. Amazingly, it didn't crack or shatter.

But, the right-rear frame rail was bent and twisted up. Now the right-rear of the car was
about 12" higher than the left side. The trunk-lid was bent, and it was a real twisted mess.
It was not only sad, but funny as hell.

We had to call Chrysler to tell them the bad news.

So we put the car back on the Hauler, and it was shipped back to he Hurst Facility at Madison Heights,
Michigan.

We were told that we would get another BO-29 within 10-Days.

We needed a BO-29 fast, because we had scheduled several Match-Races at Bee-Line Dragway
for all of the month of April. Plus we had '2' big AHRA Meets upcoming as well.

Plus we had set up a photo shoot with E.T. Magazine {AHRA Publication}

We need time to prep the car, paint it and get it ready.

When the end of March came around, we were told that we would have to wait a few more weeks to
get one, or drive up to Detroit to pick one up.

Somebody 'high up' at the Dealership then said to forget about it.

i think it would be a good idea if it also covered clones or A's with hemi's. there's alot of info out there thats hard to dig up for people just wanting to put a hemi in an A body. And there are a hell of alot of ways to do it. be nice to see that info readily available.

All for a BO/LO section. Hard to believe that there isn't one already. A lot of interest in these cars, always looking for history to help preserve these beasts.
I am certain that a one stop place for information would be extremely popular and add value to the site.

I agree.. It would take Admin about 10 minutes to add a forum to the board and be done with it. And it would cost nothing to add. What can it hurt? :)

Well I avoided this thread because I thought it would be more talk than pictures. Hmm!!

Sorry, that makes no sense.

Why would you avoid a 'thread' (aka a topic of conversation) on a 'forum' (a place dedicated to people 'communicating' aka 'talking') because there were not enough pictures? Then respond with a cryptic, passive-aggressive reply?

:-k

I was over on Pinterest checking out pictures of the BO29 Cuda's and came across this picture of the test mule car... Anyway it says "this is the 383 67 Plymouth Barracuda that became the test mule for the 68 hemi cudas and darts then it went on to be sox and martins car" under the picture.

Is it true that it became a Sox & Martin car?

Question like this will get answered.

The mule car never did become a S&M car. I had the privilege of crawling in, around & through it when a local collector (Pat McGrodder) here in Phoenix owned it. It still had the wooden block used to move the master cylinder on it!
Anyway, since it seems we're on our own for now to discuss S/S cars, anyone ever see some of the "cheater" tricks used on S/S cars applied to these? What were they? Back in the day there really wasn't a whole lot you could do but I know someone, somewhere found SOMETHING. I know of a particular S/S car that had 100lb seats to make weight. The rules said the cars had to weigh "X" amount BUT they didn't say WHERE the weight had to be!:D
I also saw a car with its original Corning glass still in it. The owner actually got double thick "cat's whiskers" for the window channels to take up the space to minimize rattling which caused the thin glass to break.
These were just a couple of the "tricks" I've seen & learned during my hunt for a "perfect" S/S car.

Don't know any tricks but sure enjoy learning about them!

More pictures of these cars back in the day would be awesome!

I remember reading some racers put oversize snow tires in the trunk and filled them with water for better traction.

I remember reading some racers put oversize snow tires in the trunk and filled them with water for better traction.

That reminded me-----we had some racers here that did that trick----but put holes in the tires & trunk so the water would run out, thus making the car's back-end weigh a bit less so they'd actually be carrying less weight as they went down the track. Don't know how effective it was but they sure believed in it.........

Another forum for these awesome cars certainly can't hurt any, but still the classracer post is the best source of information and pictures to date! Here is what my car looked like the last time it raced, wish it looked like this now!
