Back in 1966-8 one of the very fastest cars in South Ga, that whole end of the state was a 64 1/2 or 5 Mustang coup, 289 4 speed. He would race anyone with anything for $100. That was serious $ back then. He seldom lost. The kid did not even have a tach, shifted by ear.
He never would give the details of what was in that little engine. We figured Shelby parts.
He drove it home from Tifton to Nashville,Ga every Fri. afternoon, and was professional tuned.

Wow 201 posts about the lowly 318.
LOL... :D Actually, it's about at todays prices. Would the 318 be a faster motor on a modest budget than the 340 at todays prices IF you do not have either engine. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not about 318 fans and 340 fans. It's about reality and being realistic.

You do have a very valid point. I guess what it comes down to is what the cost of the 340 is. This 318 was a memorable motor. Nothing but bolt on parts, including Hi-Po manifolds !
It would burn rubber with the peg leg all the way down the street. :)

Here we go again with introducing an engine displacement NOT included in the topic guidelines.
Great job kid! Awesome! Just simply outstanding!

 :poke:
I didn't introduce it diy did! Lol I was just responding! I have been very open about how much I love 318s!

you can add the locknuts to the 273 interference lock style. @318willrun PM me your location, I may have something for you......

they're the same locknut and screw adjusters my 318 has, was that a stock 340 setup? i was told my motor had 273 rockers but from what i've seen they all seem to be no locknut 'friction' type adjusters.
neil.
That's not a stock 340 set up. 273's came with a solid cam that's why the adjustable rockers.

some will, I'm not :) Now you can see why threads can't get past the first page on topic..... What could be a fun, and maybe help somebody even make an educated build for their future project usually gets wiped clean by post 21 :D

RRR's guide to hotrod bliss did well and stayed mostly on topic.

One of my biggest issues is the ad that @318willrun posted. The seller says "as pictured with a micrometer, the piston measures a bit over 4". What is the point of the micrometer if you can't read it? Just found that funny. Like a scale...1" plus 3 little lines. Otherwise, free with a $1400 head start, I would pick the 318. Nowhere did anyone speak of resale, any other displacement, etc.

Selling a 69 Mopar 340 Long block. Casting #s are the following: Heads: " X heads " 2531894 340 1968-70 2.02 1.60 valves; Block: 2780930 340 1968-73.

I've owned this engine in present state for 16 years. As pictured with the micrometer, the piston measures a bit over 4", which specs show to be standard bore of 4.04". I did my best to keep it oiled up over the years, but the bores do need a slight overbore due to rust. Sale includes every part pictured. All rods and main caps are stamped with cylinder # for properly balanced reassembly. This engine has always been in a garage since I've owned it. I'm not willing to sell parts separately- this is a package deal only.

What does a 390 stroker kit, set of cylinder heads, 4bbl intake, cam, lifters, pushrods, gasket set, etc set you back these days? Sounds like a >$3k build to me. Anyone have any $$$ numbers?
