Transmission stud

Unfortunately, the 7/16 x 14 x 1.5 nut does not fit my 727 in that hole...go figure..:sad5::sad5::sad5:

are you talking about the 2 bolts that bolt to the transmission or the one lone stud that comes out the bottom of the x memeber?

i would try a thread chaser or bottoming tap clean up the threads if you havent already. Mine were 7/16 as well.

Ian, whip out you camera and take some shots of your transmission.

We just finished pulling the engine our and putting it back in..all because of the trans dust cover and the blasted headers.

I shall post some tomorrow.

The odd thing is that a 1/2 inch bolt fits...but it is just a tad sloppy feeling..not sure if it would torque.

Ian :)

Could it have been stripped and some retapped it metric?

Now that is an idea that I haven't thought about..that could account for the non fitting and the smaller bolt actually working.

I do know this 727 has sat for a long time and was not particularily well cared for. We did a major clean on the outside and well as a full rebuild plus a kit to bring it up to spec..then it has sat for another couple of years.

thanks

I hope not. From what I understand, there should be a sud there either.

I have to walk the dogs soon and be nice to the sig other so she knows I still live here :)

Pics tomorrow.

................Ian, me thinks that u have the bottom stud and nut from the starter installed in the tail shaft housing..........the bolts definitely 7/16 coarse........some1 must of been improvising.........kim........

Ok. Finished. Got ahold of a tap set and cleaned things up. Both were course thread...actually, you can really tell in the picture. Bought new nut and bolt. Very interesting this solution. Normally everything we touch gets cleaned like crazy ...

New problem..trans isn't lining up with the support...we are off about 1/2 inch...I assume we have to loosen either the k frame bolts or engine mounts... anybody have had this problem ?

Thanks
Ian.

Is there a chunk out of that tail housing?
That is probably why it has the stud.
No telling what they may have done.

No..that are doesn't look compromised. ... but I don't know the history of the unit other than I had a top notch guy go over it.

Do you know what we have to loosen up front to pull it over slightly ?

I am not much help on this. It seems like I have read threads about wrong motor mounts or them being on the wrong side but I am not sure.

It helps just to toss out ideas. I once worked as a very technical person within a very large group of non technical people. When I had problems I couldn't solve, I used to bring one of the folks in and just talk to them. Normally, I could see a solution to my problem at the end of the conversation. I used to get teased about this but it was effective and we all benefited. I kind of thing of this forum like that..an arena to toss out ideas.

When we did the conversion from /6 to 360, we bought engine mounts from Schumacher. I was thinking that the engine / trans group must be 5 feet long (?) or it just looks that long :) and to be out a half inch from stem to stern probably would take that much of shifting. Perhaps we should not have tightened out engine mounts or k frame bolts before we had the trans mount in....I hate to ask my son to do the k frame again so I think we will try the mounts. If one thing doesn't work, another may.

I appreciate your input.

Finished.

Undid the motor mounts...pulled on the trans..slipped in the bolts..YEHAA !!!!
