Last Monday after work I had an unexpected contact with a manhole cover. I had come over a slight rise and a railroad crossing, when I came over the rails and down my transmission pan slammed into the manhole cover. It is slightly elevated from the pavement, maybe an inch or so. Damned if the car didn't start to shake the crap out of itself. I was going slow, no more than about 25 mph. I pulled over and took a look under the car, nothing was leaking, no crunched headers, so I got back in and tried to drive it, was ok under 15 mph, but started shaking like hell at anything more. I limped it home on side streets and put it on the hoist.

Pretty much a direct hit on the trans pan, and somehow blew out one of the u-joint cups. Could have been a lot worse, I think I was lucky. Got a new u-joint put in tonight and it's back up and running again. Took a good long road test, smooth and solid again. Might have one more week or so to put some more miles on the old shitbox before I park it.
