Which one was quickest in 1972

-
1972 '440-6' Six-Pack and Six-Barrel

As early as June 1971, Mopar had planned to put the 440-6 'V-Code' in
both the 1972 Dodge Charger Rallye and 1972 Plymouth Road Runner/GTX.

Only '3' left the Factory with the 440-6 {330 HP rating for 1972} combination
before it was discontinued on August 7, 1971. These were all promotion 'only' cars,
and were not to be sold to the public.

These 440 Engines came thru with 10.3-1 Compression.

Below {June 1971} is the 'Promo/Photo Car', which is a Road Runner 440-6 with a 4-Speed.

The 440-6 'V-Code' cars were to be available to the public on September 5, 1971.

Below,

The Road Runner has yet to have the '440-6' decals and 'GTX' emblems installed on the body.

This 'proto-type' car {Red exterior, with Red interior} was never found.

And according to whichever "guru" you listen to, there were a few cars that were stamped "V" code and leaked with the actual triple deuce set up or the cars were brought back in, the three carbs and intake were replaced with a single four, and the VIN's weren't changed to show it, still leaving the "V" code and the data plate in place.

Good grief, I don't remember how many articles I've read over the years with both sides of the story, all claiming to be true.

As far as the "teen" powered cars go, although 35+ years ago, what i was around.......

A untouched factory tuned 72' automatic Duster with mags & 70 series tires.....16.20's.

A 70' Duster 3spd stick with headers, Weiand 2 plane, a 625 AVS from a 340, G60's & 3.23's.....15.50's.

A 72' automatic Charger with added dual exhaust, well tuned, with H60's.....15.80's...:thumbrig:.

While not set up or tuned for racing, these cars did run at a local, close to sea level track, that was known to be "quick".

Then there was my 71' Scamp. Had it for close to a year as a DD. Never raced it, but high 15's is where I'd put it. That and the other stock 318" A body's I drove, always felt strong mid way thru 1st gear and up thru 2nd. They were great for making a few squirt's here and there on the street.

As far as the 14's.....with the stars aligned and a full on tune, I could see it happen. I can't help but be a numbers guy though...hey, I'm of German roots :D. I like to use "in car net" numbers, and most 2bbl 318's with single exhaust put out around 150hp. With a "wet" 3300lb car in stockish/geared trim, it will take running 90mph at least to possibly dip into the 14's. Meaning I'd like to see at least 200hp "net" to get there. Will dual's & a 4bbl do it? Can it be done, I guess so since "will run" has seen it, or close to it. It would be fun to play with though.

P.S. The addition of a stock 340 cam or mild Summit/Crane grind would seal the deal imo.

318-Will-Run

OK,

* You say you have a #3300 lb. car.
* All 'stock' 318 {Long Block}
* Stock Exhaust Manifolds
* Automatic {A-904}
* Stock Converter
* 3.55 Gears
* Only Addition {4-Barrel Intake Manifold and Carburetor}

Does that sound about right..........

And you're running 15.00's.
I ran 15.9's at 84 mph with 2bbl and 2.94 gears. I have since added the 4bbl. I have not had it back to the strip since adding the 4bbl. It is definitely stronger. I have not yet installed the 3.55's. I'm saying I think I will get into the 14's with the addition of the 4bbl, 3.55's and getting the car to hook up so I can "mash" it out of the hole without wheel spin. When I ran the 15.9's, I was easing it out of the whole so I would not break the tire loose. I haven't weighed it, but it is a B-body with manual steering and manual brakes. It may be heavier than 3300 lbs. I will weigh it. I'm also saying if this car runs into the 14's, will this be a knock to the 340? A teen running the same numbers you posted, but without the much better heads, cam, and bigger bore?????

I have built 318's, 340's, and 360's. I have never tried to get a 100 % bone stock long block 318 (no headers but dual exhaust) into the 14's in a daily driver. Someone here thought and posted one time if they thought it could be done. I thought "no problem". So I am aiming to do it.... I would easily do it if I had a 3000 lb no option duster.

I know the question was what was availble on the lot. But 69 cuda 440 would you know the performance numbers for the police issued vehicles?

Peter,

Plymouth had both the Satellite and Fury

Police Engines
* 360/175 HP ~ '2-Barrel'
* 400/190 HP ~ '2-Barrel'
* 400/225 HP ~ '4-Barrel'
* 440/230 HP ~ '4-Barrel'
* 440/280 HP ~ '4-Barrel' {Satellite only}
* 440/285 HP ~ '4-Barrel' {Fury only}

Gear Ratio's
* 2.76
* 2.93
* 3.23
* 3.55

That's a wide range, just on the Plymouth side.

Weird question: could you get a 440 in a B-body station wagon for 1972?
