    A little help on cams

It's the amount of overlap that gives it the lumpy sound. Compression gives that solid thump out the exhaust. 305 duration is a bloody big cam and should give a sizeable thump. Probably run like a pig unless you plan on $$$$ to buy the other parts necessary to make it work well. However,if...

full floating wristpins vs. pressed wristpins

Can I ask why? I built a 460 fraud for a mate back in about 1985 with just the little end honed and had no dramas.I did drill and chamfer a 1/8 hole in the top of the rod for oil feed. I don't really know if it's good or bad practice hence my asking why you don't like it.

Valve oiling, how much should there be???????

You need very little oil up top. You need some, but not much. You'd find more splattering around if it was hot.

Mate,to be honest a 400hp 318 is gonna be a pretty nasty engine and it's gonna cost!!!

    HEI Conversion questions

For interest's sake, the module in my challenger I mounted under a hollowed out orange box to keep a sort of original look to the engine bay. Drilled a hole in the orange casing, fitted a grommet and ran the wires through there. It takes a moparman to spot "something's not quite right there" GM...

    HEI Conversion questions

Very neat that bracket.Never seen one of them. Your module is the Chev IM113 style. Heard they're better than what I use but I haven't tried them yet.

    HEI Conversion questions

That's what most do Joe. Once you finally change you'll never look back. Most of mine are HEI using the std chrysler electronic dizzy and Bosch BIM024 module. I've got them on a 2000 Ram with blown and injected 360 magnum. 1970 440 challenger. 1960 413 imperial 1972 Dart Swinger 318...

Why plane your intakes w/ milled heads???

I recently pieced together a mild 318 on a budget. I had 65thou milled off the heads and then dummied it up to figure out how much to shave off the intake. Don't worry,it was just a Performer I scored free so I didn't mind ruining it for future use. Anyway,I had already done some...

Engine paint.... Lets see them purdy SB's

I've done a few yellow engines and they would be my favourite. My black 69 notch 440 cuda has a yellow engine but in an orange engine bay. Black engine bays are for lazy GM owners IMO.:D Here's the latest I've done. A mate described it as "a pink marshmallow in a bowl of custard"=D>

    good ignition module?

I've swapped all my cars to HEI. Superior to any mopar ECUs. Cheap and reliable. I use Bosch pn BIM024 but heard good things abt the GM pn IM112

    timing issue or not?

Couple of things. Flat spots/stumbles,etc mean lean 99% of the time. It is actualy very difficult to tune so rich as to cause a flat spot. In a carter/edelbrock the primary jets should generally always be larger than the secondary jets. The metering rods(used for fine tuning) through the...

    Oil building up on manifold

I think that's how we ALL learnt. It's so obvious that you seem to look for something more difficult until someone actually tells you.

    Oil building up on manifold

Moper is EXACTLY correct. No question about it. Bigblocks suffer the same ailment. Threads need to be cleean and then sealed as Moper has already stated.

    help on performance decision

I had the heads milled 65thou on my 318 72 Dart Swinger to bump the CR from an accurately measured and cc'ed 8.2 to 9.25:1.

    any supercharged 318's?

Not a 318 but my Ram has a supercharged 360magnum. It's a side mount KenneBell which is a twin screw type. Shortly I'm going to intercool it too!!!

Best aftermarket intakes for an early 273?

I've never seen or heard of a D4B. Is it maybe a version of the LD4B to fit the early 273 manifold angle? If so,I'd grab it. Old LD4Bs in good order are sought after and pull a preetty good price in Australia because they work well and are a good looking thing.Well,a lot better looking than a...

Poll - Which would you build?

I'd go another 360. I'd only look at a 318 for 300 or so hp.

need advice on what could cause this slight engine problem

Yes,there is. It's stamped on the side but you'll have to remove it to read it. Sizes are 21,25,28,31,35 ....I think. If you've got , say,a 28 in there, then go up to a 31. I feel there's a very good chance wildcrazyguy's post above is spot on,but 1st try the shooter size as it's...

need advice on what could cause this slight engine problem

99% of the time flat spots mean lean. Go up one size in the squirter.

360 or 318 which would you rather have???

They both have their place. If I was chasing outright performance it would have to be a 360. The 72 Dart Swinger I'm doing is to be generally a daily driver so by choice I've pieced together a 318 which I think will go abt 280hp(abt what I want)

    Camshafts and clearance

If the lopey sound is important you need to look at overlap. The bigger the overlap, the more lope. Generally this means older design cams and generally not the modern split duration type. The older design will sacrifice some performance but you get a better lope which is what it seems you are...

    Camshaft Blues

Mate,I always set total first and then check initial. Here's a topic running now that explains it all pretty well. http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=104288 Initial is set at idle with vac adv disconnected. Hope this helps.

    35 degrees timing ?

I agree wholeheartedly with Dave. I was just answering the initial (no pun intended LOL)question. FWIW I always set timing by total and then check the initial to see if I'm happy with it. If I'm not, then it's recurve time!!!

    Camshaft Blues

Usually an indiction of too lean or not enough timing. I'd reckon you'd want at least 16 initial with no more than abt 34 0f total with your combo. Try some lighter metering rod springs.Yellows should be good. Might be a bit much carb bt the 3.91s should help to overcome that. If the carb is...

    35 degrees timing ?

Mark your balancer as in the pic of the one on my 440 before I bought a Romac balancer. Hold your engine at abt 3000rpm or high enough so it's not advancing any more. Adjust your dizzy so your mark 35deg mark lines up with 0 on the scale on the timing case cover. Job's done.

Mate, the radiator is made by a mob called PWR in SE Queensland,Australia. It's equivalent to a 4 row.One PWR row is the same as stock 2 row. They are recognised as the best in Australia and make radiators for most of the big name racers. Here's a link to their site:-D http://www.pwr.com.au/

    Custom Cam from Hughes

Haven't used them but planning on it to an upgrade in my 440.Only hear good of them on this side of the Pacific. Without getting into the nitty gritties you are advised to use Hughes recommended springs as their ramp profiles are different to anyone else and other brand spring rates will not be...
