    aussie 408 combo

Do you need to consider getting some heat into the inlet manifold? Cold starts in the middle of winter could be a *****. Use to **** me on the Melbourne winters. I bought a M1 dual plane for this reason as it has water heating on the manifold but I've now shifted up north so this isn't a...

    aussie 408 combo

Make sure you check out the Hughes lifters if you're going retrofit on the rollers. http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/products.php?browse=search&search=5321&searchmode=partnumber&partid=26114 And just go 1.5 rockers if it keeps your lift under the max on your eddie springs.

my first engine rebuild (318) advises

Just an FYI on the rods. I purchased a set of scat I beams ($270) for a 408 that I'm building and about 3 of the rods had to be resized. So buying new doesn't always guarantee they'll be perfect. If you go ARP bolts on your old rods they will have to be resized.

my first engine rebuild (318) advises

I would be using 98 at those prices as well. Also, (I'm sure you all know) 98 in euro is same as 93 in usa. I would aim for 9.5-10:1 comps on iron heads using that fuel. If you're going to put money into a set of iron heads I would also suggest getting the edelbrock heads. They are not that...

my first engine rebuild (318) advises

Hi, when I rebuilt my cousins 318, the biggest problem was the variation on the deck height. We had to remove a fair bit to square up the decks. Also, I didn't see mention what grade of fuel you will be using. If you're after fuel economy very hard to beat a Q-jet.

What went wrong ? imm stroker tear down

By saying it "diesels" I'm assuming the run on that happens once you've turned the ignition off. This suggests to me that the spark plugs are too hot. Are you using a cooler heat range plug? Perhaps this has caused detonation.

    360 Assembly issues help plz!!!

Try dropping the balancer in a bucket and pouring boiling water over it. let it sit for a few minutes then try installing the balancer and it will most likely slide straight on.

    408 stroker kits

I found these guys very good to deal with and had better prices on most items http://www.cnc-motorsports.com/crankshafts/shopby/crankshaft_stroke-4_000/vehicle_make-chrysler.html?limit=100 I bought my icon pistons and scat conrods from them. In hindsight I probably should've bought a scat crank...

Where should the weights on my torque converter be in corolation with my motor at TDC

Yes they are and the weights are different to the LA 360.

    400+ hp 273

It's been a while since this post but I just read it so I feel I should give a reply for what its worth (which isn't much). This thread started with someone who wanted to race his 273 on a circuit, now I have some experience with this (but with historic open wheelers from the 1960's) and if I...

    Edelbrock spring rate question

Thanks guys for the replies. I spoke with my machinist about this and he agreed with you Mike, I'll just shim the stock edelbrock springs a little more if I can. The other thing is Comp Cams spring specs are all over the shop, and I wonder if the 995 springs are correct for this camshaft...

I can post a picture of a magnum flex plate showing the position of the weights if this will help you.

Hot Rod magazine 5.9L magnum Build

Well I figured the stock edelbrock heads would be the bottle neck in this scenario so making more hp would depend on if the heads could flow more to meet the 408's capacity.

    Edelbrock spring rate question

I would like to know if the springs on the edelbrock head will be ok for this cam http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=650&sb=2 Comp cams recommend the 995 valve spring which has a spring rate of 441 (they also recommend the 26995 beehives which have a rate of 280)...

Hot Rod magazine 5.9L magnum Build

Are you building a magnum motor or a flat tappet LA motor? You probably won't see much difference in HP between a 360 to a 408 at this level. The main difference will be the 408 will make the HP lower in the rev range and have a flatter torque curve. But I reckon that dyno is a bit optimistic...

Need opinions on a 408 stroker build

Hi Brian, What rpm's did they make that power? Sounds like the 2nd motor revved a little more. And were they roller or hyd. cams? Thanks.

    Edelbrock head questions

Here's a picture of one of the metal balls I have found. This one I found under one of the lower spring cups. I found a total of 4 metal balls on one head, and I had to use a flex hone on 2 valve guides. Yikes. Glad I decided to strip them down.

    Edelbrock head questions

Just measured spring height and it is 1.780" Spring pressure at seat is 125lb and 300lb at .560" lift Complete head weighs exactly 14kg. Well worth going through the head as I have 2 tight guides on the inlets on the one head I've pulled apart. All spring seat pressures were even and cc's...

Get the eddy heads, and get the inlet valve size reduced. You'll save about 15kg over the front wheels.

    400+ hp 273

Are we talking about proper race car or something that sees a little track work and mostly used on the street? That cam would be a bit of a pig under 2000-2500 remember it has 12:1 comps, but if your racing you should have your revs over that anyway, so I think it would be an ideal circuit...

    400+ hp 273

High comps 12:1, big roller cam and 8000rpm. and obviously heads that will flow enough for the bore size. 273 Is this for historic racing by any chance? you say you are using a 2 barrel? or this is what it has now?

    Synthetic oil

I read a post on "bob is the oil guy" forum, by an Australian that ran a large truck fleet, he ran identical trucks, one on mineral oil the other on synthetic. During the service intervals the valve clearance was checked on both trucks and the one running synthetic never needed adjusting. He ran...
