IMO, The only real obstacle to the 11’s with 318wills proposal is the gears.

It wouldn’t be hard at all to run 11’s with an a body using a stock stroke 360...... if the cam/converter/gear choices are wide open.

The real challenge as I see it is, coming up with a budget friendly combo that will run the number with 3.55’s.
Again I have the same question...
Would you take a used stock bottom end 360 and put thousands of dollars of heads cam converters and gears and drive it back and forth to the track expecting it to do elevens for any amount of time? I'm fully confident it might do it once or twice but for season after season? Reliably being able to drive it afterwards and before?...

In your mind...... how much power do you think it’s going to take to run 11’s in an a body?
And why wouldn’t a stock bottom end hold up to that?

Season after season? Dude....... be serious.
How many times did 318will go to the track this year, and how many passes did he make?
How many passes did you make on your “hot” combo before changing it up?
No guessing...... count the time slips.

A guy that goes to the track once in a while puts way fewer runs on their stuff compared to a guy who spends his summers “bracket racing”.

As for the cost of the converter/gears...... those items are where the ET is.
A good converter is $800+.
Doesn’t matter if it’s for a $20,000 high end bracket piece or a re-ringed 360.
Costs the same.
Same with the gears....... they cost what they cost.

With the right cam, gears, converter.......you don’t need expensive heads to run 11’s.
Bowl blended stock heads will get you there.

If I were attempting 11’s with the 3.55’s......I’d buy a 408 rotating assy before I bought aluminum heads(being in the position 318will is in, with a few sets of heads already in his possession).
Then I could also get by with a less expensive converter and a milder cam too.

100% agreed but for how long on a stock bottom end?...

There are many many engines with stock bottom ends running over 400+ hp. Many turbo guys run stock bottom ends over 6 psi, 400hp+. I’ve known a stock bottom end 318 in a truck where the guy was running 10 psi for tens of thousands of miles. It’s all in mixture tune, and ignition timing.

How long can you put that much heat and pressure to the combo? That’s to be determined by parts selection, inspector, builder, maintainer, and driver. Obviously if you invest $$$ to the bottom end it will inherently last longer with the new parts. Throwing 400hp at it is no big deal, tho.

I do "not" want him to put thousands of dollars into heads cams converters and all that and kablooey...

Hmmmmmmmmm...pot meet kettle. Someone who shall remain nameless told you centuries ago you were wasting time, money and parts with a parts killing clutch and you didn't listen or understand said nameless FABO members frustration. And yet, you put your head down, backed up a country mile, and without a helmet, proceeded to run WFO into a brick wall, and then backed up and did it again. And again.

Has the worm turned for you?

Okay...... here’s my prediction......

By the time spring gets here and 318will makes his first attempts at the 11.80 goal....... this thread will be well over 100 pages........ and over 75% of the posts won’t have anything to do with what he actually did to the car/motor to achieve the goal.

It's official. You are the FABO prophet, because that will be 100% fulfilled!!!!

I’m not fond of stock rods but have personally gone 11.80’s with some upgraded bolts, and Home polishing. As far as a stock 360 crank 10.20’s so far.

Wow! Ya'll been busy while I stepped away! LOL. I'll cherry pick my responses :)
  • Looks like Jpegs been in class today... LOL. Bet he walks out with a D minus at best, and won't turn in any homework :D:poke:

Friend with a stock eliminator spun a stock bottom end 318 for 4 years at 7200 rpms. I doubt I shift over 6k, maybe only 5800.

If you get the right heads, cam and converter I think you might hit your goal with 3.23s if you can take some weight out of the car. That's assuming you are going to stick with the short 26 inch tire. My old 5.9 junkyard magnum combo went 7.47 in the 1/8th with 3.91 gears and a 28 inch tall tire. I swapped in a Dana 60 with a 3.54 gear and it still went 7.62 at the same track. I also added a 6 point roll bar so a lot of that slowing down was the weight not the gear.

If the combo is right you don't always have to have 4.56 gears ect. That stock stroke 360 has good low end torque to get you moving.
Agree! great post!

Key words in this post is 318WR will make his attempts! Thanks for acknowledging that I'm not just talk :) Agree also with your 2nd part of your post, I mean NOS is still being mentioned and I've made it clear no NOS... LOL :D

going 55 mph down the road will not require any more HP or stress to the motor than what is being applied now. Converter and gears will lower the ET, so not all the dropping of the ET will be on the motor.

Totally agree. I've been racing this 360 for the what, 4 years it's been in the car? And also agree, matching components is key.

I fully understand, that if I wanted easy peasy, I'd just order a 475 hp crate engine. Then, even if I have a bad tune and only had 410 hp on tap, I could still hit my number. I don't want to do that. Maybe someday, not today :)

Look in 11 second threads. There is a 360, 9 to 1, 280 mp cam, rpm, stock 360 heads, 1.88 1.6 4000 stall, cant remember gears but 4 something 11.66.

unless it's really j par your gunning for and I think it is in your own sick way. lol because I would and could. lol

100% a "no". Jpegs car is 100% irrelevant to my car and my goal. Don't misunderstand, I like Jpegs car. But lets get real, he's somewhere between 1500-2000 miles from me. 98.9% sure I'll never meet him, and 99.99999% we'll never have our cars together to race. I posted the picture of the car I want to at least "give a run for the money" in post 295.

I just added another tool on the bench. lol I thought you guys just posted time slips as proof positive.
Isn't that all it takes to make it TRUE....
