1966 Valiant Signet Convertible Resto

-
I just saw this thread again. I didn't realize you got back on the vert congrats it is looking great again. You did the right thing by the way walking away for just long enough to get your head back in it but not long enough to just give up one it. Keep the pics coming I want to see it coming back together. Justin

I'm happy to have it back in the garage. I have one more piece that needs to be blasted and primed.

I don't have a definete time frame anymore but I hope to have all the bodywork done over the winter and ready for BC/CC by early Spring. I have to concentrate on doing really good body prep for paint. The first and most important step IMO is already done thank God.

I've learned what not to do, which is almost as important as learning what to do. I am going to do everything by hand. I've got high quality products, good tools, and a good plan of attack. With a little luck and a little help along the way, I should come out with something to be proud of.

Stay tuned....the epic saga of my 66 convertible continues

Aloha Dave!

OK FABO members...I get first dibs when you sell it Dave! ;)

Ha. Keep up the steady work...lots of BS..but it appears you have a handle on it!

Good luck...oh and when you do get tired...he he...remember I called SHOTGUN first!

Waaaaaahooooo. Got my stuff from spraygunworld.com took a little over 2 weeks to get here but the guns look real nice. I like the balanced feel of a good tool.

The car has been blasted and epoxied, so now it is time to get the body ironed out to perfection. Now I can really get going on my project. I'll be posting my progress now that I'm armed. Just need to get the garage cleaned up and new compressor. Running 220 is going to be a pain too but will be worth it.

New tools are awesome

Glad to see you are armed with a nice gravity fed gun, do you have a licence to shoot that puppy.:toothy10:
Be careful doing the 220 and start in the shop and work your way to your supply.:read2:

Hey guys I've been on a hiatus for a while and it has been good. It feels good to finally get some work done on the convertible.

I'm pretty much finished with the filler and glazing of the doors. Next up some guide coat to make sure I got everything flat and straight. Soon, I hope to be laying down some more epoxy to seal all my filler work. Then 3 coats of 2K primer and some guide coat, then block sanding , more block sanding, and more block sanding to perfection.

Here's how it looks so far. I really love the Evercoat Metal Glaze. It took a little while to get the hang of it but it lays out really nice and fills in all the tiny pinholes from the Evercoat Rage filler nicely.

Epoxied door after the media blasting.

I love these Durablocks too with the sticky back sandpaper

Will have to decide if I want the mirror shaved or not.

Got to work on one of the fenders today too. There was a pretty good little dent here and I was able to tap most of it out. Should look good after I sand down the glaze

This is the metal glaze stuff. I really like it and it feathers really nice

Well that is my progress so far. I hope to have both fenders done this weekend and then I can start on the decklid and then the hood.

Glad to hear your back on the lil' vert. Even though a little later than expected, it will turn out great now....

looking good dave

Thanks guys. I feel really good about things this time. I can tell a huge difference with my work compared to F-head. Granted it's my car. This thing is going to be sweet when it's totally done. I am hoping by this summer I'm finished.

Like the progress so far Dave, hope it all comes out straight as a arrow. Block & prime are the keys. If your not sure about a panel, wet it down with a hose to see what it will look like painted. Let the water run down & look down it for any waves or low spots. Hope this helps. Any questions give me a call, Russell

I'm still at it. Got more work done this weekend. I got the deck lid scuffed, then skimmed and rough blocked out by hand on Saturday.

Today I was able to hit it with some glaze on the tiny low spots and pinholes. I think I'm about finished with it. I may need to hit it with some guide coat because the deck lid was pretty wavy to start with. It sure feels and looks pretty flat. Spent about 7 hours on it this weekend I guess.

Hoping this thing turns out as straight as the Red Valiant in the background

Next week will be the Hood. Can't believe I've almost gone through one can of Evercoat Rage. Most of the can is floating around my backyard.

Good to see you are getting some work done.

What spray gun is that? I ended up with the EVO4014, nice gun, has a small spray pattern, but worked well. I wished I had a bigger pattern and a nicer gun for the clear. Next time, I will invest in a $600 gun for clear. BTW, the Matrix MS42 clear is awesome, if you can spray it right, you would never need to buff it. Slick as snot!

Its amazing how much filler you use, I used two 1gl cans, and 3 quarts of glaze. Most of it was left on the garage floor, and about a 1/3 of it ended up inside me too. Here is a tip for your long durablock, dont ever store it with sandpaper attached, and leave it on a perfectly flat surface if you leave it overnight. Mine warped from the sandpaper.

Dont rush anything, it took me two years, but the body is so perfectly straight, it looks awesome. I'm glad I did not rush anything, and I had to re-do a few panels to get it right. It was worth the wait now. Now I just need to do some color sanding and buffing.

FYI, I got the Eastwood liquid ice kit they sold. I wished I would have found an extra panel to paint, so I could practice buffing on it.

Well anyway, thats enough verbal diharea (?sic) from me, glad to see you are making progress, and when I say "I know what you are going through", I really mean it.

:munky2:

I just read through all the threads and I think you should have taken the painter to court to collect damages!!

Woohoo. I get power to my garage this weekend weather permiting. Been waiting a while for a good electrician that wasn't busy.

Things are going really good. Sanding, Sanding and more Sanding................doors, fenders, and trunk lid are ready for epoxy to go over my filler work. The hood is about 1/2 way ready. I spent a lot more time on each piece using extra glaze to get it almost perfect. I'm hoping I don't have to do too much heavy blocking of the primer. I tell you what the 3M dry guidecoat is awesome stuff. I like it way better than the rattlecan stuff from SEM. Oh and the Evercoat Rage Extreme is much better than the Rage Gold. Hope to post new pictures of all the new body work soon.

Can't wait to start spraying. I'm picking up some silver base to practice using my gun on some test panels.

Until next time.

Sounds like you are on a roll Dave !

Are you still going with the "VINYL" carpet ? :toothy10:

I'll bring some rubber cement.....We can install it Sunday. What do you think, around 6 am........\\:D/

I got my booth put up today and tested the fans. Everything seems to work pretty well. With the intake and exhaust fans running I get nice positive pressure in the booth. I'm sure I could use some extra lighting but it's descent right now. I don't have big huge fans but I will know more when I get a chance to shoot some primer this week.

What do you guys think?
